NEW YORK -- Several angry major league players wanted Alex Rodriguez kicked out of their union after he sued it last week, but staff lawyers told them expulsion was not allowed. The players spoke Jan. 13 during a Major League Baseball Players Association conference call after Rodriguez sued the union and Major League Baseball to overturn an arbitrators decision suspending him for the 2014 season and post-season. Details were first reported Tuesday by Yahoo Sports and later confirmed to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the call. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. The union and Rodriguez spokesman Ron Berkowitz declined comment. All players in the major leagues are members of the union and pay $65 daily in dues, or $11,895 if a player is in the big leagues for a full season. Baseballs labour contract specifies the union is "the sole and exclusive bargaining agent for all major league players." The union will incur costs of defending the lawsuit by the New York Yankees third baseman, who claimed in the suit it "breached its duty of fair representation to Mr. Rodriguez." The union retained Michael Rubin and Barbara J. Chisholm of the San Francisco firm Altshuler Berzon to defend it, according to a court filing Tuesday. Rodriguez was suspended for 211 games by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig on Aug. 5, and the union filed a grievance contending the discipline was without "just cause." The penalty was reduced to 162 games plus the 2014 post-season by arbitrator Fredric Horowitz, who concluded Rodriguez violated baseballs drug agreement each year from 2010-12 and twice obstructed MLBs investigation in violation of the sports labour contract. Rodriguez agreed to a $275 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees after the 2007 season. Horowitzs decision cost Rodriguez $22.13 million of his $25 million salary this year; the three-time AL MVP is owed $61 million by the Yankees from 2015-17. NOTES: MLB and the union have agreed to follow their previous methodology for luxury tax payrolls in dealing with Rodriguezs suspension. He will count as $3,155,738 this year for the Yankees, which is 21-183rds of the $27.5 million average annual value he would have been listed at. Horowitz ruled Rodriguez loses 162 days pay over the 183-day season. cheap nfl jerseys . (Sports Network) - Kyle Lohse shoots for win No. 9 this afternoon when the St. Louis Cardinals play the rubber match of a three-game interleague series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. With Adam Wainwright sidelined for the year recovering from Tommy John surgery and Chris Carpenter struggling for the better part of the season, Lohse has been a pleasant surprise for Tony La Russas club, going 8-4 with a 2.78 earned run average. Lohse, who is 6-1 on the road, had been winless in his last four starts before throwing five scoreless innings to beat the Baltimore Orioles in a rain- shortened effort on Tuesday. I felt strong. I wish the rain didnt come, Lohse said after throwing just 69 pitches. I felt I could have gone quite a bit deeper than five. But you cant do anything about the weather. He is 5-2 lifetime versus the Rays with a 2.58 ERA in 10 games (nine starts). Tampa, meanwhile, will hand the ball to rookie Jeremy Hellickson, who has lost his last four starts. Hellicksons latest defeat came on Monday against Cincinnati, which reached him four runs (three earned) and eight hits in six innings, dropping him to 7-7 to go along witth a 3.dddddddddddd18 ERA. The Rays, though, have managed just one run during Hellicksons slide. Its nice to get runs early, obviously, Hellickson said. But when you dont, its not really something you can control. Its not really something I think about. This will be his first-ever start against the Cards. Tampa evened this series at a game apiece on Saturday, as Casey Kotchman hit a three-run double in the midst of a five-run sixth inning, helping the Rays to a 5-1 win. Jeff Niemann (3-4) tossed six-plus innings, allowing one run on nine hits and a walk while fanning five, as the Rays posted their sixth win in nine games. Johnny Damon finished 4-for-4 and his single in the first inning was the 2,655th hit of his career, moving him ahead of Ted Williams into sole possession of 71st on the all-time hit list. Kyle McClellan (6-5) was tagged for five runs, all in the sixth, on eight hits and two walks in 5 2/3 frames. Lance Berkman homered for the Cardinals lone run as they saw their four-game win streak stopped. Despite Saturdays setback, the Cardinals have dominated this matchup, winning six of the eight all-time meetings. Cheap Jerseys ' ' '
