Shell Energy Lab utilises smart cardsto give the visitors access to custom digital content throughout the event and create personalised souvenirs of their experience.
While we started with prototyping a 10x10 matrix of hand-soldered RGB LEDs, we eventually decided to embed a video tile component, similar to those you see in giant LED walls.
In collaboration with the design team we created a tool to easily upload frame-by-frame animations (like GIFS) onto the tiles.
This defined the user interaction with the combo cards while nobody is interacting with the associated touchpoint, the tile plays an "attractor" loop animation, inviting the users to swipe their card. Once the user's RFID card touches the glass surface of the tile, the animation loop changes confirming the interaction.
These tiles serve a subtle but central role throughout the Shell Energy Lab event's space as they were embedded in each and every touchpoint - for a total of 73 units.
This meant that we had to put a great care in designing a modular case enclosure that would be easy to fit in place during the short and highly paced time on site.
Our final implementation embedded an contactless cardsbehind a panel. The panel was mounted behind a stencil and a sheet of vinyl to diffuse the light.
Observing the visitors (many of which kids) interacting with the tiles has proven the project to be a success: the animated lighting was a natural attraction point providing an engaging and meaningful way to access the many installations and informative panels around the exhibition as well as generating important data about the users.
The company has partnered with Family Bank to provide them with RFID CARD, along with access to their extensive PesaPoint network.
Family Bank’s CEO Peter Munyiri acknowledged that card fraud, perpetrated through the magnetic strip cards, increased significantly in East Africa causing financial institutions to migrate from the strip cards to the rfid inlayechnology, which uses a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to verify card transactions instead of a handwritten signature.
“Taking the lead with EMV Chip and PIN will go a long way in boosting the confidence of our cardholders by offering a more secure environment for card payments,” he said.
“The move will be important in growing the bank’s returns by minimising its losses through fraud and we hope that the introduction of Chip and PIN, which has enhanced security features, will greatly increase customer confidence and usage,” he added.
combo cards are a joint effort between Europay, MasterCard and Visa (EMV) to ensure security and global compatibility.
The three companies initiated development of the EMV specifications in 1994 and the chip cards are more secure against credit card fraud compared to cards that rely only on data encoded in a magnetic stripe.
