RCMP seek letter from former Pamela Wallin aide
OTTAWA A letter the RCMP are seeking from a former aide about Sen. Pamela Wallin makes unflattering allegations about the embattled senator's spending habits and professional conduct.
The allegations by former Wallin aide Alison Stodin were swiftly dismissed Sunday by Wallin's lawyer, who noted they came from "a former disgruntled employee."
The August 2012 letter, obtained by Postmedia News, is part of a long list of documents the RCMP is seeking as part of its investigation into Wallin's spending.
Stodin was hired by Wallin in June 2012 and dismissed six weeks later.
She allegedly sent the letter about her former boss to Sen. Carolyn Stewart Olsen after her firing because she was concerned for her professional reputation. At the time, Stewart Olsen was a member of the Senate's standing committee on internal economy. Stewart Olsen declined to comment on the letter Sunday, including what, if anything she might have done with it.
In the letter, Stodin raised concerns about Wallin's conduct toward her, which she said escalated after Wallin discovered Stodin had reviewed the senator's expense accounts with the Senate Finance Department. "I have never been subjected to the kind of treatment and disrespect I received from Senator Wallin," Stodin wrote in the letter.
Stodin alleged Wallin would often accuse her of double booking flights and events, although Stodin said no evidence was found of chi flat iron this.
She wrote that Wallin's "personal attacks on me and my reputation started to be ramped up cheap ray bans aviators right after I told her on Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 that I was returning from a meeting with the Senate Finance Department where we had been working on reconciling outstanding American Express accounts and travel expenses."
Wallin fired Stodin cheap ray bans sunglasses on Aug. 22, 2012, "stating incompetence, and inability to run her schedule," the letter states.
On Friday, court documents revealed Stodin's letter is one of dozens of records sought by the RCMP in its investigation of fraud and breach of trust allegations against Wallin.
Wallin's lawyer, Terrence O'Sullivan, said in an email Sunday that Stodin was fired during her probationary period after "several performance issues." He noted that Deloitte auditors who did an independent study of Wallin's expenses had advised a Senate sub committee "that they did not rely on the evidence of a former disgruntled employee."
"There was no abuse of Ms. Stodin by Senator Wallin," he discount ray bans sunglasses said.
On Friday, O'Sullivan told Postmedia News he was not concerned about what the RCMP might find in its investigation. "We believe that an objective review of all the evidence will demonstrate that there was no attempt to defraud the people of Canada," he said.

How Heinrich Rudolf Hertz http://www.hockeypenguinsshop.com/evgeni_malkin_jersey.html revealed the invisible world
Like many of Google's best doodles, this wave logo holds a double meaning. Sure, it winks at Hertz's history in electromagnetism (we'll explain all of that in a moment). But the undulating curves also hide a message, one you may never notice unless you take the time to look.
The waves form a repeating pattern: There's a large blue curve, followed by a shallow red, shallow yellow, deep blue, skinny green, and one final red curve. Those lines match the general shape of Google's traditional logo: Uppercase blue G, small Os, a lowercase g, a skinny green L, and a red E. It's not the most difficult code to decipher, but Google's doodle serves as a lovely metaphor for Hertz's work.
Our story starts in 1873, when a Scottish physicist named James Maxwell tried to convince people that light, electricity, and magnetism were all versions of the same phenomenon. It was a weird idea at the time. How could the Replica Marc-Andre Fleury Jersey invisible power of magnets go hand in hand with the radiant glow of candlelight? They're obviously different to the human eye, but actually quite similar in hidden ways.
Maxwell was the first to figure out that light moves like a wave, just as magnetism and electricity move through the "electromagnetic field." This was a huge breakthrough it made sense of the invisible world in the same way that Isaac Newton and his falling apple unified the visible world. Maxwell's math checked out, yet he couldn't prove that his ideas were true. He challenged other scientists to come up with experiments that could demonstrate this invisible science to the naked eye.
A decade later, Hertz found a way.
In his lab, the German scientist rigged up two tiny brass spheres, placed very close to one another. When he electrified them, sparks leaped from one ball to the other. If Maxwell was correct, these sparks should send invisible waves radiating through the air. To test the theory, he needed to build a receiver. This second instrument consisted of a curved wire that almost made a full circle, except for a tiny gap at the top. He placed the transmitter and the receiver several yards apart and made sure that nothing connected the two. Sure enough, when sparks shot through the transmitter, invisible waves traveled through the air, lighting up new sparks on the receiver.
Hertz went on to prove that these waves move at the speed of light, that they can be reflected by some materials, and could pass through others.
While this research eventually led to radio, radar, and broadcast TV, Hertz did not initially understand the magnitude of his discovery.
"It's of no use whatsoever," he once told a student. "This is just an experiment that proves Maestro Maxwell was right, we just have these mysterious electromagnetic waves that we cannot see with the naked eye. But they are there."
By allowing the world to finally see these invisible forces, Hertz became famous. The International Electrotechnical Commission decided in 1930 that his name would become a unit of frequency. The hertz (or Hz) measures "cycles per second." For example, a 60 Hz TV runs at up to 60 frames per second.
Despite this global fame, the Nazis tried to expunge Hertz's name from history. While Hertz identified as a Lutheran, his father grew up as a Replica Sidney Crosby Jersey Jew.
"Hertz's reputation was actively denigrated by the Nazis, who forced his wife and daughters to flee Germany because, despite strong Lutheran roots, they were considered Jews," writes the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in its profile of Hertz. "One Nazi functionary attempted to overturn the use of the term 'Hertz,'. He suggested to the Physical Society of Berlin that instead they use the term 'Helmholtz,' [after Hertz's teacher Hermann von Helmholtz] which would cleverly maintain the abbreviation 'Hz' for the benefit of foreign colleagues. Despite the climate of anti Semitism, German scientists refused to go along with this plan. 'Hertz' remained and remains in use both in Germany and around the world."

While budget cuts are remaking education across the country, California still stand out for their severity. Among the resulting changes are admissions and access to the state flagship higher education system, the University of California. Here is a look at the new reality.
Securing a seat in the system has become more difficult than ever, as 100,000 students applied this year. the highest number of applicants we've ever had and the fewest we've offered admissions, said Don Daves Rougeaux, the university associate director of undergraduate admissions articulation and eligibility. The University of California, Los Angeles, was the most selective campus, but the University of California, Berkeley, had the highest average grade point average for incoming freshmen, at 4.19. All but the University of California, Riverside, and the University of California, Merced, recorded their lowest admissions rates ever, The Associated Press reported.

One of my earliest encounters with Supervisor Chris Daly of San Francisco was when he was first on the ballot nearly 10 years ago.
I lived in SoMa, and Mr. Daly and was running for the District 6 seat on the board. I crawled out of bed on Election Day, put on a raggedy old baseball cap and headed over to my local polling place, the Hotel Potter on Mission Street.
When I checked in, a poll worker sized me up, then pointed to Mr. Daly's name as he handed me the ballot and said, "This is the guy you vote for."

Safari in Kenya without four wheels
We were returning from an afternoon safari when the first bell buzzed over the intercom. Having already spent a night at the Ark, a quirky Noah's Ark like lodge tucked into the thick, verdant forests of Kenya's Aberdare National Park, I was familiar with the drill: one bell meant elephants arriving to the salt lick and watering hole that the back of the lodge overlooks. Two bells signalled a rhino. While I would have jumped at the chance to catch even a glimpse of Jonathan Toews Red Jersey either a few days back, Kenya's easy proximity to buffalo, giraffe, zebra and other African wildlife has an odd way of dulling your senses. Rather then run to the lodge's triad of decks with camera in tow, I turned down the hall toward my room. But as I reached my door, the bell buzzed a third time a pattern we had never heard before.
Related article: The future of conservation in KenyaA small group had already formed on the third floor outdoor deck when I arrived, breathless. Charles Mathenge, the Ark's affable during my stay, was beckoning us with Jonathan Toews Authentic Jersey one hand while motioning to be quiet with the other. Partially hidden in the brush was a leopard, its yellow fur covered in densely packed rose shaped markings that illuminated it against the dark green backdrop. He was staring intently at a mother warthog, her four tiny piglets foraging nearby.
remember Pumbaa, the warthog from [the film] The Lion King? whispered Mathenge. means in Swahili. At that exact moment the leopard leapt from his perch, bolting toward one of the piglets. The mother warthog ran after him at a surprising speed, grunting and repelling him backward.
didn't look dumb to me, I said.
Mathenge said, now watch this seconds the mother warthog had turned her back on the leopard, grazing obliviously as though the entire scene had never taken place.
It is hard to beat Kenya for its unfettered access to wildlife, but visitors often forget that getting up close does not have to mean being confined in a vehicle. For example, while much of your day at the Ark may be spent roaming Aberdare National Park in 4x4 jeeps seeking out playful monkeys, elusive lions and the occasional waterfall, at the lodge you are still sleeping within the animals hunting grounds. Step into the Ark's ground level, wildlife viewing room and you may find yourself within steps of a black rhino, easily photographable through the thick window. Or curl up with a hot water bottle as the temperature drops and listen to the whoop calls of hyena as you drift off to sleep. One evening I stood on the deck and watched more than two dozen elephants including a mother and baby grazing on the lick below.
And the Ark is just one of many alternative opportunities within a few hours of Nairobi, Kenya capital city.
Boat Duncan Keith Authentic Jersey safari on Lake Naivasha
There is no shortage of hippos in Lake Naivasha, a freshwater body lying 1,890m up in the highlands of Kenya's Rift valley, 120km northwest of Nairobi. And most nearby lodges offer boat tours, including Lake Naivasha Sawela Lodge.
As your guide navigates the motorised boat past papyrus stands and fisherman standing waist deep in the water, it is easy to envision the hippos rising up like sharks at any minute. But once you spot them their disproportionate ears and widespread eyes hovering just above the water's surface you almost forget your fears. Huddled together in pods, they seem surprisingly (and wrongly) nonthreatening, their massive bodies gliding around the bottom of the lake.
But hippos are not Lake Naivasha's only wildlife; it is also a bird lovers paradise. The lake is home to hundreds of bird species, from mohawked pied kingfishers to brightly coloured brimstone canaries to majestic fish eagles that glide easily through the air. Meanwhile, buffalo meander along nearby swampy banks and beyond them, black and white colobus monkeys dangle lazily on the crooked branches of flat topped Duncan Keith Jersey acacia trees.
