New Japanese method for killing dolphins is inhumane
Fishermen in Japan have adopted a new way of killing dolphins in drive hunts but the method is no more humane than the previous techniques, say vets and dolphin behaviour experts.
Japanese dolphin culls received global attention in 2009, after the release of the Oscar winning documentary The Cove. It showed in graphic detail how each year, hundreds of dolphins were herded into a cove near the fishing village of Taiji, and killed with knives and spears. In the film the cove waters turned crimson with blood.
In 2010, Toshihide Iwasaki of Far Seas Fisheries and Yoshifumi Kai of the Taiji Fisheries Cooperative reported on another supposedly more humane method to cull dolphins. This wholesale jerseys involves using a thin rod to impale dolphins behind their blowhole and sever the spinal cord.
They said tests had shown that the animals died faster and as a consequence the method was adopted officially. "Our analysis shows that this method does not fulfil the internationally recognised requirement for immediacy," says Andrew Butterworth of the University of Bristol Veterinary School, UK. "It would not be tolerated or permitted in any regulated slaughterhouse process in the developed cheap jerseys world."
Butterworth and his colleagues assessed video footage of the Taiji cull, filmed covertly in 2011 for Wholesale NFL Jerseys German conservation group AtlanticBlue. They say dolphins took longer to die than the Japanese team claim. One striped dolphin, say Butterworth and colleagues, was still moving 254 seconds after being impaled.
They add that the criteria used in the Japanese report to determine time of death termination of breathing and movement is flawed. Any animal that has just had its spinal cord severed is likely to stop moving, they say. And dolphins are known for their ability to hold their breath for extended periods of time.
In drive hunts the animals are tethered to boats by their tail flukes to herd them into the culling cove. "From a scientific, humane, and ethical perspective, [this] sharply contradicts animal welfare standards employed in most modern and technologically advanced societies," says team member Diana Reiss of City University in New York.
"In the US and UK, regulations and guidelines governing the humane treatment and slaughter of animals prohibit the killing of an animal in the presence of other animals."A Taiji fisheries official told me in 2009 that such reactions were "hypocritical" and "racially motivated", saying that spinal cord transection was also practised on chickens and other animals in the West. The new study argues that accuracy is a problem when severing the spinal cord in large animals like dolphins.
Ultimately, blood loss induces first paraplegia and later death, says the report. The process is prolonged by inserting a wooden peg into the wound, which Iwasaki and Kai said was done to prevent water contamination and to conserve the blood for commercial use.
Lori Marino of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia says the decision to focus on the culling method is unfortunate as it implies there is a humane way to kill a dolphin.
Asked if there are other killing methods that would be considered more humane, Reiss said: "The killing of dolphins is indefensible given our scientific knowledge of dolphins, which has demonstrated their sophisticated cognitive abilities including self and social awareness."
"We should ensure that dolphins receive the highest standards of treatment in any hunt, equal to that granted to domestic animals," says Kris Simpson of International Dolphin Watch. "This is clearly not being achieved, nor, under conditions in the wild, is it ever likely to be. Our position is therefore unequivocal; the dolphins must not be hunted.".

The unfinished Harmon tower at CityCenter is virtually unrepairable and could collapse in a "code level" Derek Wolfe Womens Jersey earthquake, according to a structural engineer hired by MGM Resorts International who examined the 27 story building.
In the report, members of Weidlinger Associates of Marina Del Rey, Calif., said they Wes Welker Womens Jersey ran several tests on the building and found missing or misplaced reinforcing steel in columns, beams, shear walls and transfer walls throughout the tower below the 21st floor.
"The construction defects in the tower observed to date are so pervasive and varied in character that it is not possible to quickly implement a temporary or permanent repair to remediate the defects, or even determine whether such repairs can be performed," Chuckwuma Ekwueme, an associate principal with Weidlinger told CityCenter Vice President of Facility Operations William Ham in a letter dated Monday.
A "code level earthquake" is based on the probability of an earthquake strong enough to damage structures occurring once every 500 years. The rating varies by region, depending on several factors including fault lines and soil conditions.
In the letter, Ekwueme said that if a code level earthquake were to take place, "it is likely that critical structural members in the tower will fail and become incapable of supporting gravity loads, leading to a partial or complete collapse of the tower."
The Harmon, part of the $8.5 billion CityCenter, was originally designed by the firm of famed British architect Lord Norman Foster as a 47 story hotel and condominium tower.
In 2008, building inspectors found structural work on the Harmon did not match plans submitted to Clark County. The construction issues involved improperly placed steel reinforcing bar, commonly known as rebar.
In January 2009, MGM Resorts scrapped the planned 200 condominium units for the upper floors and stopped the tower at 27 stories, focusing on the Harmon having just 400 hotel rooms. Company officials said at the time they would delay finishing the tower and wait until 2010 to decide what to do next.
CityCenter, which includes the Aria hotel casino, the nongaming Vdara and Mandarin Oriental hotels, the all residential Veer Towers, and the Crystals retail, dining and entertainment mall, opened in December 2009.
The Harmon's construction defect issues became the focal point of a lawsuit between MGM Resorts and Perini Building Co. that was filed last year in Clark County District Court. Clark County Building officials halted any construction to be done to the Harmon.
In April, the building division asked CityCenter, which is jointly owned by MGM Resorts and Dubai World, to analyze the Harmon tower and podium after its own consultant, Walter P. Moore Structural Engineers, concluded "the structure suffered from certain vulnerabilities."
In a letter to Ham, Clark County Building Official Ron Lynn said the Harmon needed to be further analyzed, "to minimize further risks to life safety, Las Vegas Boulevard, and adjacent habitable structures."
Members of Weidlinger said it would take at least "12 to 14 months" to conduct a study that would determine "how to remediate the tower or whether repairs are possible, even in its current unoccupied condition."
MGM Resorts spokesman Gordon Absher said CityCenter officials forwarded the report by Weidlinger to Clark County and will await direction from the county as to what the next steps are with the Harmon.
"The analysis from the engineering consultant confirms the pervasiveness and severity of the defective construction work at Harmon," Absher said. "We've turned over the information to the county and are awaiting direction as to the next steps."
In an emailed statement, Lynn said he directed that the report be prepared after previous http://www.officialbroncosonlineproshop.com/95_derek_wolfe_jersey_cheap concerns about the building were raised.
"I just received the report and will take time to review and analyze its contents before deciding upon a course of action," Lynn said.
Attempts to reach Perini for comment Monday were unsuccessful.
The litigation between CityCenter and Perini is on hold pending the outcome of a hearing that was held May 3 in front of the Nevada Supreme Court concerning technicalities with the case. A district judge stayed the lawsuit last year.
Meanwhile, MGM Resorts officials said the company settled claims with all but seven of the 220 first tier subcontractors that hadn't been paid once Perini and CityCenter became involved in the legal skirmish.
MGM Resorts took over settling payment matters with the subcontractors, paying $3.95 billion for work on CityCenter. MGM Resorts officials have said they paid 99 percent of what had been billed by subcontractors.
Of the seven subcontractors that haven't been paid, two are owned by Perini, three are directly involved in the Harmon litigation and two have litigation http://www.officialbroncosonlineproshop.com/83_wes_welker_jersey_cheap ongoing with Perini.
The Harmon was to be run as a nongaming hotel by The Light Group, a restaurant and nightclub operator. The Harmon would also feature MR CHOW, a branch of the popular Los Angeles restaurant owned by Michael Chow.
But with the building the focus of litigation, construction was halted on the interior. The outside of the building is blue glass which surrounds what is essentially an empty shell.

Teammates defend Incognito as NFL appoints investigator to probe Dolphins matter
The basic role that Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito shared as offensive linemen for the Miami Dolphins was protecting quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
The roles are Von Miller Womens Jersey now reversed.
Tannehill is defending both Martin and Incognito, the central characters in a bullying saga that has taken both offensive linemen off the field and continued to evolve Wednesday when the NFL appointed a lawyer to investigate possible misconduct within the team workplace. Shortly afterward, many Dolphins spoke out about the matter for the first time and with at least one questioning Martin's motives.
"I don't know why he's doing this," offensive lineman Tyson Clabo said. "And the only person who knows why, his name is Jonathan Martin."
Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Martin considered quitting football in the past, with one of those people saying it was because of how other offensive linemen treated him. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because http://www.officialbroncosonlineproshop.com/88_demaryius_thomas_jersey_cheap the organization has not given specific reasons about his departure from the team.
Incognito is suspended. Martin left the Dolphins last week after a lunchroom prank, and remains excused.
"If you had asked Jon Martin a week before who his best friend on the team was, he would have said Richie Incognito," Tannehill said, on another day when dozens of reporters descended on the team complex. "The first guy to stand up for Jonathan when anything went down on the field, any kind of tussle, Richie was the first guy there. When they wanted to hang out outside of football, who was together? Richie and Jonathan."
The prank was a silly one when Martin sat down to eat, everyone else at the table stood up and walked away. It's apparently a go to comedic ploy for the Dolphins; Tannehill and offensive lineman John Jerry both said they've been targets of that very act in the past, and that it's typically just laughed off.
Not this time. Martin left the team on Oct. 28 after it happened. The story has continued spiralling ever since, with questions about not only whether bullying was tolerated, but if Incognito used racially charged terms against his teammate in phone and text messages. Incognito is white. Martin is biracial.
"What's perceived is that he was a racist, psychopath maniac," Clabo said, defending Incognito. "The reality is Richie was a good teammate, and that Richie and Jonathan Martin were friends, or appeared to be."
Added Jerry, who is black, speaking about Incognito's alleged use of a racial slur: "I know the type of person he is and I know he don't mean it that way."
How everything inside the Dolphins locker room is meant will now be probed by New York attorney Ted Wells, the NFL's choice to dig into the matter. Wells has experience with high profile sports matters, having been involved with special investigations into the Syracuse basketball sexual harassment case and the NBA players union leadership dispute.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said the team will co operate fully with Wells's investigation.
"The type of culture that I've championed since the day I've walked through these doors has been one of honesty, respect and accountability to one another," Miami coach Joe Philbin said. "I consider those to be hallmarks of this program, and I believe our locker room reflects those beliefs. I believe in the men in our locker room, and I believe in our coaching staff."
Inside that Demaryius Thomas Womens Jersey locker room, players defended both themselves and Philbin.
"What's been bothering me is kind of things that you hear from outside this locker room about things that maybe undermine the integrity or the leadership or the type of players and the class of guys that we have here and the class of this organization," defensive end Cameron Wake said. "I've been here five years and coach Philbin has done nothing but turn this organization in a positive direction from top to bottom."
Wide receiver Brian Hartline said seeing the franchise take hits over the saga was difficult to bear.
"Now we're able to say our opinion and protect ourselves from being bullied by you guys because we weren't talking," Hartline said. "We weren't fighting back. We never said a word. We had to sit back and listen for a couple of days. We're kind of tired of http://www.officialbroncosonlineproshop.com/58_von_miller_jersey_cheap it."
Clabo said there's a way the offensive linemen treat one another, that no one is exempt from the ribbing and that it's done to keep the mood light in the room.
"You have to earn the trust of your teammates in this league," Clabo said. "No one is going to walk in the door and just automatically be somebody that you want to go into a game with and believe and trust and know that that person's going to be there when he's supposed to be there. Those things have to be earned."
At this point, it's unknown if Martin will have that trust or even if he'll return to the Dolphins, period.
Tannehill said that if either Martin or Incognito returned, he would be inclined to try to move on from this saga.
"All I know about Richie is he's a great teammate to me," Tannehill said. "I saw him being a great teammate all the time. Does he like to give guys a hard time? Yes. Does he like to pester guys and have fun? Yes. But he brought a lot of laughter to this locker room, he brought a lot of cohesiveness to this locker room and he was the best teammate that I could ask for."
