Colts' Monday Night Football appearance turns into Monday Night Dud with 19
Penalties, all of them killers.
Misguided coaching decisions, like the decision to punt rather than go for it on fourth and 3 at the San Diego 40 yard line trailing by seven points late in the third quarter.
Did I miss anything?
Andrew Luck's "Monday Night Football" debut was a Monday Night Dud, and it was hardly his fault. On this, the night of a 19 9 Colts' loss to the Chargers, Luck was left on an island of dropped passes. Hilton, Coby Fleener (who couldn't have been more wide open), Reggie Wayne and Trent Richardson. Give LaVon Brazill a game ball; he didn't drop any Monday night.
The game ended as it should have ended. The Colts got the ball with a chance to pull off another fourth quarter rally, only to see Richardson drop an easy screen pass, followed on the same play by Hugh Thornton's silly personal foul.
Then the Chargers got the ball and played keep away like the mean kids on the playground. After a poor Pat McAfee punt the Chargers got the ball at their own 48 ran cheap jerseys off a couple of first downs and set up a field goal that put the Chargers ahead for good 19 9.
The Colts were flat.
They were uninspired.
They were, well, they weren't the Colts who rushed out to a 4 1 start, including two tremendous road victories at San Francisco and Jacksonville. It was, by any measure, Indy's worst performance of the year, and that includes the home loss to the Miami Dolphins. In the process, they blew a beautiful opportunity to take a two game lead on the Titans in the AFC South.
"We stunk on third downs," Luck said.
Truth be told, they stunk on first and second downs, too, rarely getting themselves into manageable down and distance situations with a running game that didn't produce. And defensively? Brutal. San Diego controlled the line of scrimmage, broke tackles, converted 7 of 14 third downs, including three on Colts penalties.
Listen, the Colts weren't guilty of looking ahead to the massive Sunday night matchup against the Denver Broncos. We're looking ahead to it, but the Colts? No, they weren't looking ahead. That's a cheap nfl jerseys cop out, a non story here.
They flat got out played, taken to the Woodhead, er, the woodshed, slapped around by a San Diego Chargers team who constructed a masterpiece of time management.
And the Colts beat themselves into submission.
"Credit San Diego, they played a heck of a game," said Chuck Pagano, whose team played grossly out of character all night. "But you just can't beat yourself. Penalties. There at the end, on the punt the return, we get a block in the back from a guy trying hard. Then we had the screen set up (the pass dropped by Richardson), the kid (Thornton) is playing hard and takes a penalty. We just beat ourselves, but credit them."
Pagano gets some of the heat for this one, too.
Here was the situation: It was late in the third quarter, the Colts trailing by seven, Indy with fourth and 3 on the San Diego 40. By that point, the Colts defense had shown no inclination to stop the Chargers all night. At that point, you put the ball in Luck's hands and let him make a play.
Instead, the Colts punted.
Said it at the time, saying it now: Big mistake.
"It's called a three way alert; we're sitting there based on what happens on third down," Pagano said. (Wayne dropped the third down pass that would have been good for a first down). "It was too long for the field goal. We still felt like we were in a situation where we had enough time, enough timeouts to kick the ball, pin them back and give ourselves a chance. I thought about it (going for it) but I thought a punt was the best thing to do."
Said Luck: "As a competitor, yeah, you always want to go for it on fourth down. But I trust the coaches to make the right decisions."
If all that wasn't bad enough, the Colts lost linebacker Jerrell Freeman to a concussion near the end of the first half.
Did I mention Peyton Manning is coming home next Sunday?
The Colts had been money on the road, playing brilliantly in road wins at San Francisco and Jacksonville. But in Luck's Monday Night debut, they looked sluggish, jet lagged and decidedly uninspired.
So now that is done, and Peyton Week begins. It will be an endless reel of Peyton stories, the past, the present, the future, all Peyton, all the time.

Before sticking a toe in the water, consider this advice: Swim in a pool that at least 20 to 25 yards long; those pools can usually be found at high schools and some gyms. Kicking back in Caye Caulker
Belize, on the www.officialbroncosonlineproshop.com/88_demaryius_thomas_jersey_cheap northeast coast of Central America, embodies a wonderful mix of Spanish and Caribbean influences, particularly on its cayes (pronounced "keys"), a series of very small islands northeast of Belize City.
Related article: Top 10 spots in Central AmericaSet in the turquoise blue of the Caribbean Sea and an hour boat ride from Belize City, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker have managed to retain an unspoiled and traditional feel while providing good facilities for tourists. This is mainly due to the ongoing efforts of the locals and resident expats who have fought off big developments. Caye Caulker is considered the more budget conscious of the two. Ambergris Caye has more up market restaurants and hotels without losing its roots. The boat ride to the cayes is a treat in itself but there are some flights to the tiny airstrip if your sea legs fail you.
Unlike Jamaica, Barbados or even the Dominican Republic, Caye Caulker does not have all inclusive resorts where it can be hard to get a feel for the locals and their culture. Things have stayed small and accessible with a range of hotels, guesthouses and hostels to choose from, and everything is in walking distance of, well, everything. There are very few cars on the island; most transport is by golf buggy or bike. You can walk from end to end, Demaryius Thomas youth Jersey about five miles, in an hour.
The ocean surrounding Caye Caulker is part of a marine reserve, full of tropical fish, manta www.officialbroncosonlineproshop.com/58_von_miller_jersey_cheap rays, dolphins, sharks and turtles. Scuba divers from all over the world come to the 400ft deep, shark filled Blue Hole, and the Belize Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, is located about one mile from shore. There are lots of companies running tours to both and offering scuba diving lessons with full PADI qualifications. Carlos and his snorkelling tours (his office is on Front Street beside Caf Y Amor) are well respected. If you ask around, enterprising local fishermen will also bring you out to the reef for snorkelling, a cold beer and a chat about life. Other operators offer full and half day sailing tours, fishing expeditions for snapper and barracuda or bigger catch in deeper waters.
Otherwise, Caye Caulker is a great spot to do very little for a week or two. Caribbean life in general moves at a slow pace, and out there you can happily pass the days just eating, drinking and lying on the beach.
Start with a breakfast of fresh fruit, eggs, bagels or granola on the deck of Caf Y Amor (Front Street), with views of the colourful tropical birds and flowers and the latest local gossip. This is the best place in town for fresh coffee but they close in the afternoon after lunch, so plan accordingly.
The Split is a small beach, but it is also the best; other parts of the island have sea grass growing at the water edge which makes swimming difficult. This is not the kind of beach where you rent an umbrella but it is where everyone hangs out, including the locals. More importantly it is Von Miller youth Jersey where lunch is delivered to your beach towel, courtesy of Charles the tamale man who cycles by regularly with fresh chicken or vegetable options. Wash them down with a Belikin beer (dark or light) from the Lazy Lizard, a wooden shack of a beach bar that opens around noon and serves a good happy hour special for most of the day.
The beach is also the perfect place to catch the sunset. Order a sundowner cocktail from the bar and salute another laid back perfect day by the Caribbean. The reliable dinner option at most places is a tasty dish of rice, beans and chicken, hot sauce optional. Alternatively, locals set up informal fish grills by the water and sell passers by plates of whatever the fresh catch of the day is along with rice, beans and fried plantains for about $5. Lobster is also available, in season, at a very reasonable price. The I bar (off the south end of Front Street) is an institution on the island and another good spot for the sunset or to listen to reggae music into the later hours.
Yuma is a great hostel by the water and close to where some of the boats pull in from Belize City. The front garden is a relaxing spot of hammocks, shady seats and overhanging coconut trees. Rooms are basic, but functional and well priced. The nearby Bamboo restaurant, whose floor is actually the beach, cooks up a range of local dishes on the menu.
Caye Caulker has an internet caf an ATM, the great Caye Caulker Bakery (Middle Street) and plenty of places to eat fresh seafood. Thanks to an easy co existence of locals and expat owned businesses, tourism has thrived while ensuring the island remains true to its origins.
Enfield's Matt Mulligan leans heavily on faith while trying to stick with Patriots

New England Patriots tight end Matthew Mulligan (left) catches the ball for a touchdown as Atlanta Falcons safety William Moore and linebacker Akeem Dent (right) are late to defend in the end zone during their NFL football game in Atlanta September 29, 2013.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. Matt Mulligan is painfully aware that in the National Football League, everything can change at any moment.
On Aug. 31, he was released by the Green Bay Packers, then signed with New England on Sept. 3 only to be cut by the Patriots two days later. Mulligan then re signed with the team on Sept. 10.
The former University of Maine standout from Enfield is among four tight ends on the New England roster. His job security may rest on the health status of Pro Bowl tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is working his way back into playing shape after recovering from offseason arm and back surgeries but has not played in a game this season.
With Gronkowski's return looming, presumably in the near future, Mulligan is determined to make the best of his opportunity to stick with the team.
"I really just try to approach every day as a new day, try to get better at what I can get better at," Mulligan said. "In this line of work, it could be gone tomorrow."
Despite any uncertainty, Mulligan said he enjoys a sense of calm that is the result of his faith in God.
"For me, it's believing that the Lord has a plan for me," he said. "At the same time, I have to take care of what I can take care of. It has been a difficult year thus far, for sure, but it's a blessing to be able to play day by day."
Mulligan, his wife, Stephanie, and their nearly 6 month old daughter, Clara, are living at an extended stay hotel in the Foxborough area.
"Coming here was such a quick turnaround. I know that everything can change in an instant," he said. piratesproshop.com/Authentic-Starling-Marte-Jersey
The 6 foot 4, 267 pound Mulligan has served primarily as a blocking tight end in limited action with the Patriots. It is the same role he filled with the New York Jets from 2009 2011, and again last season with St. Louis.
Sunday night, he enjoyed another career highlight when he caught a 1 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Tom Brady in New England's 30 23 victory at Atlanta. It was his piratesproshop.com/Authentic-Jeff-Locke-Jersey second TD reception as a pro.
"I can talk about Tom [Brady] making a throw, which is awesome, and me making a catch, but it takes 11 guys or we're not able to make that play," he said.
Mulligan was quick to point out that his family and friends, especially those in Maine, have been tremendously supportive, regardless of how he plays.
"It's been a blessing, the whole thing, just to be up in the New England area and playing for the Pats," he said.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is noted for being a man of few words when speaking with members of the media. He nonetheless offered some praise for Mulligan during a recent press conference.
"He a tough kid, Youth Starling Marte Jersey smart, Belichick said. came in here and picked things up and learned them pretty quickly."
Belichick pointed out that Mulligan has been recognized for his NFL experience and his approach to the game.
"He hasn had a great deal of playing time but has been solid with the playing time that he has had," Belichick said. "That the type of thing that will lead to more opportunity. He a hardworking guy that does his job, knows what his role is, works hard to do it. way Mulligan looks at it, his career thus far has been largely unexpected.
He played basketball, soccer and tennis at Penobscot Valley High School in Howland, which does not sponsor a football team. Mulligan was introduced to the game during his two years at Husson University in Bangor, then learned his craft after transferring to the University of Maine.
He signed a free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins in 2008.
Mulligan has enjoyed his brief time with New England, an organization which he said effectively lays out its expectations of each and every player on the team.
"It's my job. I have to be able to form and shape myself into what they want me to be," he said.
Mulligan had high praise for Brady in his limited dealings with the future Hall of Fame quarterback, specifically in regard to his businesslike approach.
"If you could pick someone to lead your organization or your football team, you'd want someone like Tom," he said. "You can rely on him to do the best thing for the team."
Mulligan readily admits football is a grind, not only physically but psychologically. The latter aspect is critical.
