After seven years of failure, it finally seems as though Toronto FC is moving in the right direction. With Major League Soccers youngest general manager Tim Bezbatchenko at the helm and the vastly experienced Tim Leiweke heading up the organization, we are starting to see encouraging signs as the foundation is laid for a much improved roster in 2014. Of course, there have been many false dawns before at a club that has changed direction far too many times in its short history, but this time it feels different. There actually seems to be a plan being carried out by people who have the ability, knowledge and relationships to get the job done. The signing of24-year-old Brazilian forward Gilberto as a Designated Player on Friday could be a major piece of the puzzle, but other moves made this week also give an indication that progress is being made. Jacksons arrival from FC Dallas provides the club with some MLS experience as well as someone who can play in a number of different positions. The trade of Stefan Frei along with re-signing of Joe Bendik ensured the goalkeeping situation was dealt with in a timely manner. The fact that these moves are being made in early December instead of March is a welcome change. At Toronto FCs Downsview Park training facility, “the war room” as Bezbatchenko likes to call it has a board with long lists of players they are chasing. The moves the club is making are calculated. There are top targets, and many back-up plans as the GM and his team work through a process paying great attention to detail, determined to get the best fit possible for their club in both a football and financial sense. They have made no secret of their intention to sign a big-name Designated Player. Jermain Defoe is set to join the club in January from Tottenham Hotspur, but he is just one of four or five top level DPs the club has targeted. Plan B, C and D are all on stand-by in case there is a last minute hitch with the England forward, although I understand the deal has already been agreed to to bring Defoe to Toronto for a transfer fee that could rise as high as $13 million. Beyond the DP signings there are also two or three other key players Bezbatchenko expects to bring in. Dwayne De Rosario is a potential target, but only if the deal is right. TFC certainly wont overpay to bring the veteran home. Bezbatchenko is taking a methodical approach that will hopefully ensure the club isnt left scrambling in preseason looking to sign players as has been the case on so many previous occasions. This year, there should be no need for 10 players to turn up for a preseason trial in Orlando, or for multiple players to be rushed to the border to activate work permits on the afternoon before the season opener. There was even an occasion a few years ago where a deal was done so late that a player had to sign his contract in the taxi on the way from the airport to the stadium for the first game of the season! I sense those days are over. When talking with Tim Bezbatchenko it is easy to see he has a plan. He also has the relationships within the league to assist in making that plan work. In the tight knit community of Major League Soccer, the importance of having relationships with other clubs, agents and players cannot be underestimated, and having worked at league office, Bezbatchenko has earned respect across MLS. Toronto FC fans have the right to be skeptical - they have seen failure too many times before. But with three months until the new season begins, the club is finally starting to deliver on its promises, and that is an extremely big step forward for a franchise that cannot afford to fail again. SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Fed up and frustrated at the lack of effort and energy, Sacramento Kings coach Michael Malone shook up his lineup hoping to find some kind of spark. The move turned out to be exactly what his team needed. Marcus Thornton scored a season-high 24 points after losing his starting spot to rookie Ben McLemore, and the Kings snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Brooklyn Nets 107-86 on Wednesday night. "Marcus, I said to him after the game, Maybe I shouldve put you on the bench sooner," Malone said. Greivis Vasquez had 17 points and 12 assists, and Isaiah Thomas added 19 points, six assists and six rebounds to help the Kings rout Brooklyn. Sacramento led by 18 points in the second quarter and 23 late in the third before holding off a brief rally in the fourth. The Kings shot 43.6 per cent and committed only seven turnovers. They also held the Nets to 37.8 per cent shooting and forced 15 turnovers. "If I couldve written a script for tonight," Malone said, "it wouldve played out just like it played out." Nothing has gone according to plan for the Nets this season. After acquiring Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce from Boston, the pairs championship pedigree has yet to blend in Brooklyn so far. The Nets have lost three straight to drop to 2-5 this season, including 0-4 on the road, with the latest performance perhaps the most perplexing. "Its unacceptable," first-year Nets coach Jason Kidd said. "We dont score, we hang our heads and then they score on the other end." The Nets never sustained any kind of rhythm, even after DeMarcus Cousins picked up his fourth foul and was taken out early in the third quarter. They played slow and looked like aging veterans -- especially against Sacramentos young and athletic rotation -- and were often embarrassed on both ends. Brook Lopez had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Deron Williams finished with 13 points and seven assists as the Nets lost their third straight game. Brooklyn plays at Phoenix on Friday night before wrapping up the three-game road trip at the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night. "I hope this was a wakeup call to start the trip," said Pierce, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. Sacramento, a place where most NBA fans are still just happy to have a team after the Kings nearly moved to Seattle in May, finally showed some promise on the court for the first time since winning its season opener against Denver. McLemore, the seventh overall pick out of Kansas, made his first start along with Jason Thompson. Thornton and Patrick Patterson, who had eight points and a season-high 10 rebounds, moved to the bench as part of a revamped rotation Malone said he will use again Friday against Detroit. The announced crowd of 15,122 roared when McLemore finished an alley-oop from Vasquez on a fast break in the first quarter, though the rookie struggled for most of the game. McLemore finished with two points on 1-of-8 shooting. Thornton scored 13 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers, and tossed a lob that Cousins dunked with one hand to give the Kings a 43-25 lead. "I kept pounding in my head, Just go out there and play and relax," said Thornton, who finished 10 of 19 from the floor, adding four rebounds and two assists. "Shots started falling, and things happened." The Nets answered with 11 straight points, with Williams keying the spurt despite favouring his left ankle for a minute after slipping on teammate Andray Blatche. Cousins also was called for a technical foul -- his second this season -- to help Brooklyns run after the Sacramento centre shouted at official Joey Crawford. Sacramento closed the half leading 52-40 before blowing away Brooklyn after the break. Vasquez fed Patterson for a layup that put the Kings up 80-57 with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Williams floater sliced Sacramentos lead to 84-72 early in the fourth. Then Jason Terry was called for a foul and a technical foul after elbowing Vasquez, part of a 16-8 run that gave the Kings a 100-80 lead. "Were not in a comfort zone or anything like that," Vasquez said. "We have to come back and be professional about this and build from this win." Admitting he was no longer up for the rigours of fighting in a cage, the UFCs pay-per-view king vacated his welterweight title and announced a hiatus from the sport. St-Pierre (25-2) also cited personal issues, which he declined to detail. But clearly they have obscured his obsessive focus in a sport whose athletes spend months preparing for fights. "Physically Im 100 per cent, Im still young, Im on top of the world," the 32-year-old from Montreal told a media conference call. "But mentally I just feel like I cannot go through another training camp right now and I dont know when I will be able to." UFC president Dana White said No. 1 contender Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks will fight No. 3 (Ruthless) Robbie Lawler for the title on March 15 in Dallas. "I think this is the right move for Georges St-Pierre," said White. "You can hear by listening to him hes got a lot of issues personally that he needs to deal with." St-Pierre had cast doubt about his future last month following UFC 167, a controversial split decision win over Hendricks, when he said he needed time away from the sport to sort out some personal issues. That enraged White, who did not like the idea of one of his biggest assets walking away -- especially in the aftermath of a controversial decision. But White calmed down after talking to St-Pierre later that night. And on Friday, he continued to downplay the drama. "At the end of the day, its really not that big of a deal. The guys got some things that he needs to deal with. He was classy enough to say Im not going to jam up the 170-pound division while I deal with these things, Im going to step aside and handle myself and then Ill be back." In the wake of the Hendricks fight, a TMZ report said the champion was dealing with a family illness and a personal issue. White later told The Canadian Press that St-Pierre had told him the report was not true. St-Pierre loosened up during Fridays call, joking with reporters that they were not going to get anything personal from him. "Im going to take a break. I need this," he said Friday. "I need to have a normal life for a bit. Ill feel better and come back stronger." Having a normal life was a theme repeated throughout the conference call. Asked what he wants to get away from, St-Pierre said he loves his sport. "As much as I choose to do it, now I choose to not do it." He said he expects to be back, although he sounded far from certain. "I dont know when, I dont know if, I think I will (be back) I cant say 100 per cent. But right now I just dont want people thinking about me." Press tours, cameras and trash-talking were some of the things he said he needed to avoid. St-Pierre was somewhat vague about a comeback. "I believe one day I will come back. The problem is I dont know how long (I will be away)." He said he has already conquered Everest three times before, when he lost to Matt Hughes (in 2004) and Matt (The Terror) Serra (in 2007) and when he came back (in 2012) from knee surgery. "And if I have to do a fourth time, believe me, I feel like Im, going to do it." White, who explained GSPs UFC contract was considered frozen, said he believed St-Pierre will be back. St-Pierre exits ranked second to light-heavyweight champion Jon (Bones) Jones in the UFCs pound-for-pound rankings. White called St-Pierre "the greatest welterweight ever" and "the gold standard in everything." "And as far as working with us, theres nobody better. If I had 475 guys like Georges St-Pierre, my life would be a lot easier." A gentleman outside the cage who shares little of his personal life, St-Pierre has always taken his responsibilities seriously. In 2008, he missed an interview session with a visiting reporter who was left standing outside a Montreal gym. His manager at the time advised that St-Pierre haad suffered a minor injury earlier in the day and had forgotten about his interview with the reporter.dddddddddddd The journalist told the manager not to worry, given they had already had a previously scheduled appointment for the next day. St-Pierre, however, had a different idea. He drove to the gym to collect the reporter and took him out for dinner to do the interview. Then he drove the reporter to his hotel, apologizing again for having been late. While other fighters wore T-shirts and sweats, St-Pierre -- taking a page from some champion boxers -- always wore a suit for his post-fight news conferences. St-Pierre, who said he will keep training, has no need to fight again. He has made millions and made a point of looking after his family when the cheques started coming in. One of his first duties as champion was to pay off the mortgages of his parents and sisters. The UFC is wasting no time getting round to the post-GSP era. Carlos Condit is currently ranked No. 2 among welterweight contenders but he has lost to both St-Pierre and Hendricks. And White noted that Lawler just beat Canadian contender and GSP training partner Rory (Ares) MacDonald. "Not to mention the fact that theres not doubt that the Robbie Lawler-Johny Hendricks fight is going to be an absolute gunfight." White said Condit may also be on the Dallas card. Condit was previously due to fight Matt (The Immortal) Brown until Brown was sidelined by a back injury. As champion, St-Pierre has worn a target on his back since he first won the title in 2006. "The situation Im at, its a lot of pressure," he said. "Its like every fight Im carrying weight on my shoulder. Every fight, its like you add weight on your shoulder. Every fight. "At one point it comes so heavy that I have a hard time carrying it myself." St-Pierre has survived turmoil throughout his career. He lost his championship belt in his first title defence before winning it back. And he has endured a string of injuries, including knee reconstruction surgery in December 2011. That prompted the UFC to pit Condit against Nick Diaz for the interim title. Condit won but was beaten by St-Pierre when the champion returned to action at UFC 154 in November 2012. St-Pierre was the first Canadian to hold a UFC title since Carlos (Ronin) Newton, who held the welterweight crown for seven months in 2001 before losing it to Matt Hughes. St-Pierre lost to Hughes, now a member of the UFC Hall of Fame, in a title bout at UFC 50 in 2004 but won the rematch at UFC 65 in November 2006 to claim the championship belt. His initial reign at champion was short-lived. Beset by family illness and lacking focus, GSP was upset by Matt (The Terror) Serra in his first title defence at UFC 69 in April 2007. GSP fights as he prepares. A good camp equals a good performance. He paid a heavy price for a bad one. St-Pierre retooled, changing his management and revamping his coaching staff. "I truly believe that this loss is probably the best thing that ever happened to me," he said at the time. At the suggestion of a sports psychologist, he carried a brick around with Serras name inscribed on it. Then he threw it in the chilly waters of Montreals South Shore to bury the memory of the Serra loss. St-Pierre has not lost since. He won his title back from Serra three fights later in commanding fashion, at UFC 83 in Montreal in April 2008. The decision over Hendricks was a record 19th win in the UFC for St-Pierre, moving him past Hughes at 18. It also extended his string of victories to 12, the longest current run in the UFC. The Hendricks victory also moved GSP past former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for most wins in UFC title bouts at 12. St-Pierre holds the record for career fight time in the UFC at five hours 28 minutes 12 seconds. He also owns the UFC mark for most championship rounds fought (52). UFC 167 was St-Pierres 14th championship fight, one behind Randy Couture. St-Pierre also leads the UFC records in total strikes landed, significant strikes landed, takedowns landed and takedown accuracy rate, according to FightMetric. "Im content," he said of his legacy. St-Pierre is not the first UFC champion to give up their title. Tim Sylvia voluntarily gave up the heavyweight championship belt in 2003 when he tested positive for steroids, which was a pre-emptive strike to being stripped. Bas Rutten gave up his heavyweight title in 1999 to campaign as a light-heavyweight. Injuries forced him to retire soon after. Frank Shamrock voluntarily vacated his title in 1999 and retired, although he later returned to action outside the UFC. ' ' '

Hands up if you remember the last trade made by the Blue Jays. I admit, I actually had to look it up. It was back on December 14th when the Jays sent reliever Brad Lincoln to the Phillies for 33-year-old catcher Eric Kratz and 24-year-old lefty reliever Rob Rasmussen. It has been a quiet winter hasnt it? Of course we were spoiled in the off-season a year ago, when Alex Anthopoulos pulled off that monster 12 player deal with the Miami Marlins and then followed up with that seven player swap with the Mets that landed R.A Dickey. Off-seasons like that come along every 10 years or so, if that. Over the weekend I was curious to see, which team had been the Blue Jays most common trade partner. I can tell you it wasnt the Yankees, though they have made 23 deals with the Pinstripes. It wasnt Cleveland either, though the Jays have made 23 swaps with the Tribe. No, the team the Blue Jays have made the most deals with over their 37-year history according the BaseballReference.com is the Oakland As; thirty to be exact. Going over them one-by-one, I could see only one that the Jays outright lost. That one went down on Dec. 8, 1984. The Blue Jays dealt left fielder Dave Collins and shortstop Alfredo Griffin to Oakland for Bill Caudill -- the guy who was supposed to be the closer who would push them over the top. Of course that didnt happen, and by June of 1985 Tom Henke became the ninth inning guy and the Jays did in fact go on to win their 1st division title. Eventually Griffin found his way back to Toronto and as a utility infielder became part of the World Series teams in ‘92 and ‘93. The Jays very first trade with the As came on February 24th of 1977, when their original roster was still being formulated. The Jays dealt infielder Mike Weathers to the As for veteran outfielder/first baseman Ron Fairly, who had played with the Expos in their early years as well. Fairly provided a sense of veteran leadership and class in the Jays clubhouse that 1st year. On July 31, 1993 at the non-waiver trade deadline, Pat Gillick was trying to put together a deal for lefty Randy Johnson to help make a run at a second straight World Series title. When he couldnt get the arm he wanted, Gillick turned around and dealt lefty Steve Karsay and a player to be named later (outfielder Jose Herrrara) to the As for all-time stolen base king Rickey Henderson. Though he turned out to be a rental, Rickey helped ensure a World Series win over the Phillies come October. J.P. Ricciardi pulled off a deal with the As on December 7, 2001 that helped both teams. He sent closer Billy Koch to the West coast for third baseman Eric Hinske and right hander Justin Miller. Hinske became American League rookie of the year in 2002. The Jays made two more deals with Oakland that they clearly won. On November 18, 2003 they picked up lefty Ted Lilly for outfielder Bobby Kielty, and then on November 18,? 2007 -- exactly years later -- they acquired SS/2B Marco Scutaro from the As for a couple of prospects who never made it in Kristian Bell and Graham Godfrey. The Jays mistake was not keeping Scutaro around longer as he went on to help the Giants win a couple of World Series titles. If you were wondering, the team the Blue Jays have made the fewest deals with is Tampa Bay. Since the Devil Rays/Rays came into the American League, the two teams have only gotten together on three deals and none of them were really memorable. The last was over nine years ago on December 12, 2004 when the Jays sent catcher Kevin Cash to the Rays for right-hander Chad Gaudin. On December 14, 2003, the Jays pulled off a three-way swap with the Rays and Colorado; the Blue Jays getting reliever Justin Speier from the Rockies and sending lefty Mark Hendrickson and Sandy Nin to Tampa Bay, while Colorado received lefty starter Joe Kennedy from the Rays. The only other deal between the Jays and Rays was supposed to improve the Jays pitching depth for a playoff push in 2000. The Jays sent 2B Brent Abernathy to the Rays for lefty reliever Mark Guthrie and right-hander Steve Trachsel. The deal didnt really work out for the Jays as Guthrie went (0-2) with a 4.79 ERA and in 11 starts, the slow-working Trachsel went (2-5) with a 5.29 ERA. Both were gone at the end of the season after the Jays missed the playoffs under Jim Fregosi. To Trachsels credit, he did revive his career over the next six years with the Mets winning 66 games, including 16 in 2003 and 15 in 2006. The Tampa Bay Rays since 2008 have made four playoff appearances and have been to one World Series (2008). On their roster today, they have only four players who were with that team in 2008: Reliever Grant Balfour, who was just re-acquired as a free agent, lefty David Price , star third baseman Evan Longoria and super utilityman Ben Zobrist. The Blue Jays over that same span have only three players who were with them in 2008: Dustin McGowan, who hardly pitched at all do to injuries, Jose Bautista whos been injury plagued the last two seasons, and Adam Lind, coming off a solid season who nevertheless, over the years has been plagued by inconsistency. Technically Casey Janssen has been with the team that long as well, but he missed the entire 2008 season with a torn labrum. A teams core players tell you a lot about the team. Its not hard to see why the Rays have been contenders the last six seasons and the Blue Jays have not. Cheap Ray Ban Sunglasses. The Oilers open the second half of their season against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, when theyll try to end a three-game losing streak thats part of a 2-8-0 record over the last 10 games. Edmonton lost forwards Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as well as defencemen Tom Gilbert and Ryan Whitney at various points in that 10-game period. "We cant do much about whats gone on in the first half, good and bad, unfortunately," coach Tom Renney said on Tuesday. "What we can control is whats in front of us and we certainly approach it that way." Briefly atop the Western Conference standings after a 9-3-2 start, the Oilers hit the halfway mark in 13th place at 16-22-3 with a 4-1 loss in Dallas last Saturday. That defeat saw Edmonton finish a stretch of seven road games at 1-6-0. "Weve got a group of guys here who have a terrific cumulative attitude, if you will," Renney said. "We just have to stay with it. We had a great start and we faltered and we slipped. Other teams that people were writing about and throwing accolades all over have also had tough times and slipped. Renney is confident that Edmonton can find itself back in the Western Conferences playoff picture with some hard work. "Theres an ebb and flow to the hockey season and theres no reason why we cant get ourselves winning again and get ourselves on a couple of real good rolls that really help reel people in," said Renney. Edmontons biggest personnel loss came in the 4-1 loss to the Stars. Eberle, who leads the team in scoring with 17 goals and 26 assists, sprained his knee when he collided with Jamie Benn. Eberle will be out two to three weeks. "Whatever people are saying, we still want to make a push here and win hockey games," said Eberle, who has already matched the 43 points he had in 69 games as a rookie last season. "Obviously, its going to be tough to watch from the crowd, but, at the same time, Ill get healthy and get back into this line-up as quick as I can." Nugent-Hopkins, who leads NHL rookies in scoring with 13 goals and 35 assists will be out until the end of January with a shoulder injury suffered when he lost his footing and fell into the boards in a 4-3 win in Chicago on Jan. 2. With Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins injured, Renney will lean heavily on Taylor Hall -- who has scored goals in four straight games -- as well as Sam Gagner, Ryan Smyth and Alex Hemsky.dddddddddddd "The first 15 games were great for us," said Hall, who will face New Jersey on a line with Gagner and Hemsky. "The last 25 havent been the greatest. "Theres been a lot of injuries. Theres been times when weve had a lot of key guys out. Its hard to play like that. Theres no getting around that, but we have to put that behind us and focus on having the best second half we can possibly have and see where that puts us." Gilbert sprained his ankle against the Blackhawks when he was slammed into the boards by Daniel Carcillo. Hes likely out until after the NHL all-star game on Jan. 29. Whitney, who has struggled to recover from ankle surgery, hasnt even played since Dec. 22. The loss of Gilbert, who leads the Oilers with 23:41 of ice time per game, is a big blow. With Whitney in and out of the lineup, Gilbert and Ladislav Smid have been Renneys go-to tandem. "Ive used this before, but the Pittsburgh Penguins are in a playoff spot right now without the best player in the world," Gagner said, talking about the loss of Sidney Crosby. "Its tough. Theres times where it gets frustrating, but every team goes through injuries at some point in the season. Its a matter of guys just coming together and collectively battling through it. "Its be a pretty special feeling in here if were able to soldier up and have a good little run here with some key guys out and get ourselves back into playoff contention. Thats our goal." After back-to-back 30th-place finishes, Renneys goal at the start of the season was to play meaningful games in March and April. That will take some doing. Going into games Monday, the Oilers sit 26th overall and are 13 points back of the eighth-place Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference. "We really can only approach every day as it comes and pay attention to the needs of the day in terms of how we practice and how we prepare to be better," Renney said. "Thats what you do here. I think our attitude is probably as important to us as anything." Edmonton is getting some reinforcements from its minor-league system. Forward Magnus Paajarvi was recalled from Oklahoma City with Ryan OMarra Monday after tallying nine points in 10 games with the Barons. Both will be in the lineup against New Jersey. That wont be the case for former first-round pick Gilbert Brule, who was also recalled but had to clear re-entry waivers. Brule was claimed by Phoenix ' ' '

The UFC has taken over another mixed martial arts rival, buying Strikeforce. UFC president Dana White confirmed the sale Saturday in a text to The Canadian Press, saying the San Jose-based Strikeforce will continue to be run as a separate entity. Strikeforce, home to such fighters as Fedor Emelianenko, Nick Diaz and Dan Henderson, has been seen as No. 2 among North America MMA promoters although the UFC has been a clear leader in the sport. Still it has survived where others have failed and it has a TV deal in the U.S. with Showtime (Strikeforce is shown on Super Channel in Canada). White says Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker will continue to run the business. "It is literally business as usual," White, speaking of Strikeforce, said in a video posted on the UFC website. White has always spoken positively about Strikeforce and Coker, perhaps because they went about their job without challenging the UFC as others had tried to do. Still Strikeforce managed to beat the UFC to the punch in signing Emelianenko, an MMA icon. White, who refused to become a co-promoter as the Russian fighters management demanded, said at the time he was dumbfounded that his deal had been turned down. The Strikeforce buyout is the UFCs latest attempt to ensure it has the best view over the mixed martial arts landscape. It also gives the UFC another televised showcase to promote the sport. The UFC has bought or absorbed other rivals in the past, including Japans Pride Fighting Championships in 2007, and World Fighting Alliance and World Extreme Cagefighting in 2006. The UFC also struck a deal with Affliction, prompting the clothing manufacture to become a sponsor rather than a rival promoter. It had hoped to continue operating Pride in Japan, but that never happened and the UFC eventually absorbed its new purchase. It essentially bought the WFA for the fighters under contract, with Quinton (Rampage) Jackson at the top of the wanted list. The UFC ran the WEC as a separate entity until December, although it revamped the promotion to focus on the lighter weight class. It has since absorbed the WEC, adding its bantamweight (135-pound) and featherweight (145-pound) weight classes. Strikeforce adds a new ribbon to the UFC empires bow in that it features women. Victorias Sarah Kaufman is a former Strikeforce welterweight champion and the promotion has also featured Julia Budd of Port Moody, B.C. Fighters have moved between the UFC and Strikeforce. Former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields joined the UFC after beating former UFC vet Henderson in his Strikeforce debut. Shields is slated to challenge Georges St-Pierre for his welterweight title at UFC 129 in Toronto on April 30. Henderson, who left the UFC after failing to come to contract terms, just won the Strikeforce light-heavyweight championship. The deal makes for some unlikely connections. White turfed Paul (Semtex) Daley after the English welterweight tried to sucker-punch Josh Koscheck at UFC 113 in Montreal last May. Daley now fights for Strikeforce. White has also often shown his distaste for Showtime. The fourth-seeded Penguins jumped out to a great start in Wednesdays opener, taking a 3-0 lead into the first intermission, but the visiting Flyers scored four unanswered goals and eventually won the contest, 4-3, on Jakub Voraceks goal just 2:23 into overtime. Voraceks game-winner came after some sloppy defensive play by the Penguins in front of their own net. Philadelphia defenseman Matt Carle attempted a centering feed from the left wing and the puck made it on goal. However, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang accidentally cleared the puck to the right side, where Voracek was alone to sweep it into an open net. For the 22-year-old Czech, it was his first career playoff score and it helped give the Flyers the 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. "Even though its almost impossible to come from that far behind, we knew we could do it," Voracek said. "We stuck to the game plan, came back. We had to wait it out, spend the energy for the whole 60 minutes. We came back against them three times already and it shows how hard we work for every goal." Danny Briere scored twice and Brayden Schenn tied the game late in the third for the Flyers and also added two assists. It was the first time Philadelphia had won a playoff game when trailing 3-0 after one period of play. "It took a lot of work to win this game. We cant dwell on it," Briere said. "You celebrate for a few minutes but we have to get ready for Game 2. We have a chance to take both here and then be up 2-0 coming into our building. We might as well go for it." The game did not come without its share of controversy, as Brieres first goal of the contest came on a play where the Flyers sniper was clearly offsides. Still, despite that lucky break, Briere once again proved himself as a playoff performer, as his two-goal night gives him 98 points in 98 career postseason games. Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov shook off some early rust and earned the win with 25 saves. Sidney Crosby, Tyler Kennedy and Pascal Dupuis lit the lamp in the opening 20 minutes for the Penguins. Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 26 shots for the loss. Evgeni Malkin, who led the NHL with 109 points during the regular season, was held off the scoresheet in Game 1. Pittsburgh continued to struggle at home against the Flyers, who entered this series with a 5-1 all-time record at Consol Energy Center. Wednesdays game was Philadelphias first playoff test at Pittsburghs new building, which opened at the start of the 2010-11 campaign. The Flyers hope to extend their success in Pittsburgh tonight and grab a 2-0 edge in the series ahead of Sundays Game 3 in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma would like his club to tie the series tonight and he thinks they can do so by sustaining the excellent start they had in Game 1. "Im not so sure the pace cant be sustained. Its a conscious decision with puck management to be able to play at that speed," Bylsma said. "We werent as good as the game got later. Its not a matter of sitting back." This series marks the sixth all-time playoff meeting between the Flyers and Penguins. Philadelphia won the first three matchups, but Pittsburgh has taken the last two postseason encounters, both of which came in the Crosby-Malkin era. The last series was in the opening round of the 2009 playoffs and Pittsburgh claimed that series in six games en route to a Stanley Cup title. Panthers make postseason return in Game 1 vs. Devils The Florida Panthers will play their first playoff game in 12 years when they host the New Jersey Devils tonight at BankAtlantic Center in the opener of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Florida ended the longest postseason drought in NHL history this season, as the third-seeded Panthers punched a ticket to the playoffs for the first time since 2000 by winning the franchises first-ever Southeast Division title. Although Dineens Panthers were rarely impressive in 2011-12, the clubs 38-26-18 record was good enough to finish ahead of the Washington Capitals in the Southeast. Florida won the division despite having four less wins than the Capitals. Florida also had the worst goal differential out of any team in the playoffs this season, giving up 24 more goals than it scored during the regular season. The Capitals are the only other postseason team on the minus side in that category. Three of Floridas top-four scorers this year came to the club during the offseason, including Tomas Fleischmann, who led Florida in both goals (27) and points (61). Kris Versteeg, another summer acquisition, was the leading scorer for the Panthers for much of the season, but missed some time due to injuries and finished third on the club with 54 points (23 goals, 31 assists) in 71 games. Homegrown forward Stephen Weiss, who was selected by Florida with the fourth overall pick of the 2001 draft, centers the toop line with Fleischmann and Versteeg as his wingers.ddddddddddddWeiss led Florida forwards with 37 assists and was second on the team with 57 points. Tonight will mark the 29-year-olds first- ever playoff game. Three of Floridas top eight point producers this season were defensemen. Brian Campbell, who was acquired in the offseason in a trade with Chicago, led all Florida players with 49 assists and was fourth on the team with 53 points. Meanwhile, Jason Garrison exploded for 16 goals from the blue line in 2011-12 after posting just seven goals in 113 NHL games before this season. Dmitry Kulikov also had four goals and 24 assists to finish eighth on the team in scoring. Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen has still not revealed who will start in tonights Game 1 of this series, but if he goes with the hot hand the task will likely fall to former Devil netminder Scott Clemmensen and not Jose Theodore. Clemmensen is best known for his 2008-09 season with New Jersey. The 34-year- old was forced into a starting role for much of that season thanks to an injury to Martin Brodeur and Clemmensen did not waste the opportunity, going 25-13-1 with a 2.39 goals-against average in 40 games. Although Clemmensen has not approached those numbers since signing a three- year deal with Florida following the 2008-09 campaign, he posted an 8-4-1 record from the beginning of February to the end of the regular season. Theodore, meanwhile, last won on March 17 and went 0-3-4 over his final seven starts of the season. Overall, Theodore was 22-16-11 with a 2.46 GAA this season and is 19-28 with a 2.82 GAA in 51 career playoff games. Clemmensen, who was 14-6-6 with a 2.57 GAA this season, has never started an NHL playoff game and his only appearance in the postseason was a seven-minute relief effort for Brodeur during the 2005-06 playoffs. The sixth-seeded Devils may have a lower seed than the Panthers, but New Jersey has earned its favorite status in this matchup. New Jersey finished fourth in the highly-competitive Atlantic Division with 102 points, just seven less than the New York Rangers, who are division champs and the No. 1 seed in the East. Devils head coach Peter DeBoer, like Floridas Dineen, is making his NHL playoff debut as a head coach tonight. DeBoer was fired by the Panthers after the 2010-11 season, making room for Dineen to take over his post. Overall, DeBoers first season with the Devils was a success, as he got New Jersey back to the playoffs after the club missed the postseason last year for the first time since 1996. "Three-quarters of that team is different personnel than what I had there, so they really are [just] another team for now," DeBoer said of facing his former club. "Ill have a few more friends in the crowd in Florida from my time there, but other than that it has no special meaning." The Devils boast a strong group of forwards that is led by wingers Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise, who form two-thirds of the clubs potent top line. Kovalchuk posted 83 points (37 goals, 46 assists) in 77 games this season, while Parise was second to Kovalchuk on the team with 31 goals and finished third on the team with 69 points. Travis Zajac will likely center the Parise-Kovalchuk line and had two goals and four assists in just 15 games during an injury-plagued season. All told, New Jersey boasted five players with 20 or more goals this season and four of those snipers had more than 25 markers. David Clarkson scored a career-best 30 goals, while veteran Patrik Elias posted 26 markers and also finished with a team-high 52 assists. Clarkson was bothered by a lower-body injury at the end of the season, but is expected to play in Game 1. Meanwhile, New Jerseys defensemen accounted for just 13 goals this season with Mark Fayne leading the way with four tallies. Veteran blueliner Marek Zidlicky, who was acquired at the trade deadline from Minnesota, had two goals and six assists in 22 games for the Devils and is the clubs best offensive option at the back end. Brodeur, the starting goaltender for all three of the Devils championship teams, has struggled in recent postseasons and the Future Hall of Famer hasnt led New Jersey to a playoff series win since it beat Tampa Bay in the opening round in 2007. Brodeur, who will turn 40 years old in May, still has terrific overall numbers in the playoffs, going 99-82 with a 2.01 GAA and 23 shutouts. He was 31-21-4 with a 2.41 GAA in 59 games this season, while steady backup Johan Hedberg was 17-7-2 with a 2.23 GAA. The last time the Panthers were in a playoff series in the spring of 2000 they wound up getting swept by New Jersey in four games in the opening round. The Devils went on to win their second Stanley Cup title later that spring. The Panthers and Devils split four meetings during the 2011-12 regular season with Florida posting the superior 2-1-1 record thanks to a shootout loss. New Jersey wound up outscoring the Panthers by a slim 12-11 margin over the four games. Brodeur struggled a bit against the Panthers, going 1-2 with a 2.62 GAA in three games. Theodore went 1-0-1 with a 2.40 GAA versus New Jersey, while Clemmensen allowed just one goal in Floridas 3-1 victory over the Devils on Feb. 11. That was Clemmensens only outing against his former team this season, but he is 4-0 with a 2.05 GAA in five career games against the club that drafted him back in 1997. Game 2 of this series is scheduled for Sunday in Florida. The Panthers were 21-9-11 as the host this season, while New Jersey was 24-15-2 on the road. ' ' '

So the Indianapolis Colts have now created victories over the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. Given the inability of Jacksonville, the inconsistency of Tennessee and the injuries of Houston, the AFC South is under control by the Colts going into almost the mid-point of the 2013 season. I thought Sunday nights game would have been a robotic win by Denver. You know, one of those games that remains close for a while and then Peyton Manning figures it out to win by 10. What I didnt anticipate was how well the defensive backs would play for the Colts and how exceptional the coverage would be by Vontae Davis, LaRon Landry, Darius Butler and Antoine Bethea. If there was a group that rose to the challenge of covering three excellent receivers it was the Colts defensive backs. It was also noticeable that as the game progressed both Ryan Clady and Orlando Franklin as pass protecting offensive tackles are as important as any players on the Broncos. It was just a matter of time before Robert Mathis had his way. What is the difference between Manning and Andrew Luck? The way I see it, not much. Mannings experience is greater but Luck will run effectively at any point of a game and the three runs he had made an impact that the Broncos could not defend. Week 7 will go down as the injury week of 2013 and I hope it is not repeated. First, Brian Cushing with the Texans, broken leg and knee damage on a perfectly legal block by Jamaal Charles in Kansas City. Some may ask why Charles didnt stay up high, why did he cut him on the line of scrimmage? If he had stayed high Cushing would have picked up Charles and thrown him on top of quarterback Case Keenum. It was a complete physical mismatch and Charles had no choice. In Chicago both Jay Cutler and Lance Briggs are gone with groin and shoulder injuries for weeks but not the season. I thought Marc Trestman did an exceptional job of explaining the loss against Washington, the details of the injuries and turning it into an optimistic opportunity for the Bears. Trestman is impressive. It has nothing to do with his CFL background but everything to do with his ability to articulate and communicate. In watching his Monday press conference he conducts himself as a pro in many clear ways. An NFL coach does not have to represent himself with professional class the way Trestman did with the Chicago media. There is nothing in their contract that says they must. Many if not all detest the Monday morning or afternoon "state of the team" address but do it anyway. Many if not all look at the media as a necessary evil, not a tool to be used. After watching the post-Chicago press conference I know exactly what is going on with the Bears heading into the bye week because the head coach told me directly. Not to be forgotten, Doug Martin is out for maybe the season in Tampa Bay, Sam Bradford is out for the year in St Louis, Reggie Wayne is done for 2013 with the Colts, Jermichael Finley could be done in Green Bay, Nick Foles, concussion with the Eagles in the Dallas game. Have I missed any? Week 7 in NFL football was brutal. How about the Buffalo Bills? After an overtime loss to Cincinnati they win in Miami and win convincingly. I dont know if Thad Lewis is a 16-game starter but he has fulfilled his role as a quarterback now for two weeks in a row. Mario Williams is becoming the Mario Williams of his Houston Texan days and yes, he is earning his big paydays. Pressure to perform is one thing, pressure to perform when everyone knows how much money you make is another type of pressure. But the Bills duo of Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller are making the team competitive in the AFC North. Jackson, 386 yards, Spiller 362 yards. You add them up and you have a running game after seven weeks that had 748 yards and as a team the Bills average 141 rushing yards a game. That is the good news. Bad news? They play in New Orleans against a Saints team that is coming off the bye. In Kansas City the Chiefs are 7-0 and dont have their bye week until the second week in November. The schedule has been good to them and Alex Smith continues to be nothing more than himself. Conservative, smart and confident. Andy Reid has found the perfect quarterback for Andy Reid. I was mildly shocked when I heard that as a starter Smith is 26-5-1. That is as good as anyone in the quarterback business. The Chiefs have exceptional individual talent that now is being coordinated. Two good running backs, two good pass rushing defensive ends and two good cornerbacks. The secret to their success? On third down the Chiefs run exceptionally well-executed blitz packages. Well designed and well run because they have the aggressive athletes to run them. In Cincinnati the Bengals are winning the close games. Two weeks ago, they prevailed 27-24 over Buffalo in overtime and Andy Dalton threw for 300 yards plus. Last week, in Detroit, another 27-24 win on a last play field goal as Dalton thew for 300 plus once again. When this season is over the Bengals could finish first in the AFC North and the last two close wins are why. They did lose cornerback Leon Hall for the season (achilles) so someone else has to step up at one of footballs toughest positions. And finally, the New York Giants are now 1-6 and on their way! Just kidding. This will be a tough season for the Giants as the Jets are now "the" football team in New York. Opening drive on Monday Night Football. Giants run 16 plays, go approximately 80 yards, take an amazing nine-and-a-half minutes off the clock and...kick a field goal. Kind of sums up the season so far in New York with the Giants. Looking ahead, here are the best two games of Week 8. Dallas at Detroit as the Cowboys control the NFC East, and the Jets at the Bengals. One was expected to be on top of their division - the Bengals - while the other continues to improve, Jets. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nba-jerseys/. Kirk Cousins: three touchdowns, no sacks. If preseason stats could be taken at face value, one could have fun cobbling together yet another Washington Redskins quarterback controversy, this one involving a pair of rookies. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/mlb-jerseys/. Davis started in left-field in the Blue Jays 8-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday after Eric Thames was demoted to triple-A Las Vegas earlier in the day. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nhl-jerseys/. Danks (3-8) allowed only two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits, and struck out seven in winning his third consecutive start. The left-hander was actually hit in the back of the head by a Stephen Drew line drive in the fourth inning, but remained in the game. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nike-nfl-jerseys/. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced Wednesday the firing of head coach Tim Burke.SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Detroit Red Wings are coming home with a chance to take a step toward history. Suddenly, that seems well within reach. Tomas Holmstrom broke a tie with 6:08 remaining, and the Red Wings scored three third-period goals to avoid elimination with a 4-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Sunday night. "Theres a lot of character on this team. Theres not any quit," said Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard, who made 39 saves. "Our season was on the line there in the third period, and we found a way." Danny Cleary and Jonathan Ericsson also scored in the final period to send the series back to Detroit for Game 6 on Tuesday night. After winning the first three games, San Jose is clinging to a 3-2 lead. Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski and Devin Setoguchi scored to help the Sharks take a 3-1 lead early in the third period. Then the Red Wings scored two quick goals before Holmstrom redirected the winner past Antti Niemi, leaving a sellout crowd stunned and silent. Niklas Kronwall also scored and Pavel Datsyuk added three assists for Detroit. "I think you put yourselves in a very dangerous position if you get back on your heels against that team," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "I didnt think we did that tonight. They just outplayed us in the third period." The Red Wings moved closer to adding to their already storied history. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders and 2010 Philadelphia Flyers are the only teams to win a series after losing the first three games. With Chicago winning three straight to force a Game 7 against Vancouver in the opening round, thats enough of a precedent to give Detroit hope that it can push San Jose to the brink. The Red Wings already have overcome a repeat of last season, when they went down 3-0 to the Sharks -- just like this year -- before being eliminated in Game 5 at San Jose. No encore this time. Detroit came back again with a strong push up ice and sent several shots at Niemi after going down two goals. In a span of 1:46, the Red Wings got a goal from Ericsson and another from Cleary on a wraparound shot for the equalizer. Then Nicklas Lidstrom sent a slapshot from centre that was deflected on net by Holmstrom, redirected top shelf to beat Niemi and shock a towel-waving crowd that was ready to toast a berth in the Western Conference finals for the second straight season.dddddddddddd "I didnt know it went in right away," Holmstrom said. "But I saw the ref point at the net and I felt pretty good." Fans had reason to be optimistic: the Sharks had controlled the puck and forced the action from the start. But they failed to convert on two power plays in the opening period -- not even registering a shot on the first -- and nearly fell behind again if not for a spectacular save from their goalie. Niemi kept the Red Wings from going ahead first, diving to his left to rob a slap shot by Ericsson with a glove save. A few minutes later, Joe Thornton won a faceoff in Detroits territory and passed it back for a Dan Boyle slapshot from just inside the blue-line. Boyles shot was redirected by Setoguchi for his fifth goal of the playoffs to put San Jose up 1-0 with 2:42 left in the period. The Red Wings were able to kill off another power play in the second to give themselves a chance, only to fail to even get a shot off when they had their own man advantage. Then Pavelski made them pay when he took a pass from Ryane Clowe on a 2-on-1 break, flicking the puck past Howard to give the Sharks a 2-0 lead. The goal also was Pavelskis fifth of the playoffs, although he didnt have much time to celebrate. Kronwall scored 53 seconds later with a wrist shot that beat Niemi top shelf with 3:35 left in the period. Any momentum the Red Wings had entering the final period seemed to end with a thud. Dany Heatley came out of a scrum along the side boards and shoved a pass ahead to Couture, who finished on a wide-open breakaway past Howards left leg 54 seconds into the third period to give the Sharks a 3-1 cushion. "When we go up 3-1 we usually finish teams off," Thornton said. "They fought back very hard. We made a couple of careless plays and against their skilled players, they put those in." NOTES: Red Wings F Johan Franzen tweaked his ankle and was limited in the third period. ... The Red Wings inserted left winger Drew Miller into the lineup and scratched Jiri Hudler. ... The Sharks are 7-0 when they lead a series 3-1. ... The announced attendance was a sellout crowd of 17,562. ... The Sharks fell to 5-1 when they score first in the playoffs. ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA -- The Eagles have released two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Babin in the first major roster move for a team thats lost seven straight games. Babin had just 5.5 sacks after recording 18 last year. He signed a five-year, $28 million deal last summer after going to his first Pro Bowl with Tennessee following the 2010 season. The move came Tuesday, a day after a 30-22 home loss to Carolina. Coach Andy Reid says the Eagles cut Babin to give more playing time to younger players. Castro appeared to injure himself on the swing on a foul ball in the second inning. He remained at the plate and hit an RBI single on the next pitch. http://www.louisvuittonoutletshop.com/Women-zs-16_Louis-Vuitton-Sunglasses-jl-49/. Torres slotted in from close range in the 29th minute, and then wriggled through the defence six minutes later before slipping the ball through to Ramires to dink the ball into the net. "For the players who have not played in the last few matches it was good to play -- everyone is happy," Torres said. http://www.louisvuittonoutletshop.com/. The question all fans want to know heading into this light heavyweight affair is will Rua display his true potential. Working with UFC welterweight fighter Demian Maias team in Sao Paulo Brazil and having training partners such as fellow UFC stand outs Fabio Maldonado and Daniel Sarafian, the 32-year old feels very well prepared for Friday nights encounter. http://www.louisvuittonoutletshop.com/Women-zs-16_Louis-Vuitton-Shoes-fv-88/. Gary finished with nine points and five assists for the Lobos (21-11), who will face top-seeded BYU in the semifinals on Friday. It will be quite the matchup, as New Mexico beat the Cougars both times during the regular season. Kendall Williams added 16 points for the Lobos, who have won four in a row.MINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Love walked to halfcourt toward a group of kids from St. Judes Childrens hospital, determined to bring a few smiles to some little faces that were in need of a boost. Truthfully, the Minnesota Timberwolves power forward needed a pick-me-up as well. And thats just what he got when Avery Evans, a 4-year-old being treated for pediatric cancer, walked up to meet him. "I reached my hand out for a high-five and she hugged my leg," Love said Sunday. "So I reached down and gave her a big hug. She turned and put her cheek against my shoulder and smiled at the camera." Love melted a little bit, as a season of frustrating starts and stops was momentarily forgotten. Love received the Kia Community Assist award Sunday for organizing a winter coat drive that brought thousands of coats to those in need in the Twin Cities. He also met with the kids as part of the NBA Cares initiative that is teaming up with St. Judes and the V Foundation to fight pediatric cancer. Pau and Marc Gasol, David Lee, George Karl and Lionel Hollins are among the other NBA representatives participating. "Its an awesome opportunity," said Tony Giuliani, whose 7-year-old son, Drew, was among the children who met Love before the game against Golden State. "A lot of people dont get to see this kind of stuff. Unfortunately, were here for bad reasons. But for us, things have gone the right way and its great of the Timberwolves organization and Kevin Love to spend time with patients that really have a hard thing in life to deal with. Its really a benefit for us to do something like that." Love has been active in the community since he arrived in Minnesota in 2008, making the coat drive his signature event but also spending time with families of sick children. It has always brought him a little extra perspective and made him feel good, but this year he needed it a liittle more than usual.dddddddddddd He has broken his shooting hand twice, limiting him to 18 games in the first season of a new four-year contract. He also drew the ire of fans early in the season when he publicly complained about his deal and openly wondered about the direction of the franchise. The Wolves, who opened the season with designs on making the playoffs for the first time since 2004, have struggled without their star, and several other players who have been injured. They started the day 20-32 and in 12th place in the West. "A day like today always helps put the bad stuff in the past and really look forward to bigger and brighter things," Love said. "I think that we have had a tough year as far as injuries go. Weve been losing a lot. But on a day like today, I think its really gratifying and nice." Love said he plans to meet with doctors for another examination on his surgically repaired hand toward the end of the first week in March or the beginning of the second week. Hes hoping to return with 15-20 games remaining in the season to try and put a positive end to a most disappointing year. Love first broke his hand in the preseason, didnt have surgery and returned about 10 days ahead of schedule. He broke it again in January and this time needed surgery to fix it. He said the injury is feeling much better this time around, but he has yet to begin basketball-related activities. "After surgery, it feels just different. Better," Love said. "It feels like my hand again." While he is waiting to return to the court, hell soak up moments like the one he shared with little Avery to try and remember that things could be so much worse. "When you see a family getting taken care of and what they have to go through, I mentioned perspective," Love said. "Its really great to see what St. Judes done. Its really great to see." ' ' '

(Sports Network) - Daniel Hudson has done a complete 180-degree turn since losing his first four starts of the season and will try to keep the Arizona Diamondbacks atop the National League West when he takes the mound tonight in the finale of a three-game interleague series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Hudson has won two straight starts and is 5-0 with a 2.70 earned run average in his last seven, with the DBacks going 6-1 in that span. He went the distance for the first time in his career in a 4-1 win over the Chicago White Sox last Friday, scattering three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. He has now won eight of nine decisions following that 0-4 beginning to improve 8-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 15 outings in 2011. The right-hander, who has allowed one earned run in each of his last three appearances, has no record and a 10.13 ERA in two career games (one start) against the Royals, spanning just 5 1/3 innings. Hudson spent the 2009 season and parts of the 2010 campaign with the White Sox before being traded to Arizona. Arizona remained a half-game ahead of San Francisco for the NL West lead with Wednesdays 3-2 victory thanks to a three-spot in the top of the fifth inning. Xavier Nady had an RBI double and Willie Bloomquist provided a run-scoring single to highlight the frame, while Nady later came around to score on Ryan Roberts sacrifice bunt. The DBacks produced just five hits, but won for the fourth time in their last six tries. Those are things weve been working on all spring training and we only had five hits, so we were very efficient with that inning and we went to our bullpen, said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. Ian Kennedy threw six innings for the win, allowing one run and eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Micah Owings allowed a run in the seventh before both David Hernandez and J.J. Putz tossed a scoreless inning of relief, with Putz notching his 19th save in the process. The Diamondbacks, who catapulted to the top of the NL West with a 15-2 run last month, are 6-2 in interleague action this season and will shoot for a sweep of the Royals after winning the opener, 7-2, on Tuesday. Arizonas Justin Upton has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games, hitting .462 in that stretch. Teammate Chris Young had hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games (.323), but finished 0-for-3 with a walk last night. The Diamondbacks will try to move eight games over the .500 mark for the first time since they was 30-22 on May 27, 2008. The team has won 14 of its last 18 road games and will also visit Detroit for three games on this six-game road swing. Kansas City will try to salvage the finale of this set after dropping a tough one in Wednesdays middle portion. Chris Getz had three hits and two runs scored, while Melky Cabrera and Mike Moustakas finished with two hits apiece for the Royals, who have lost four straight and six of their past seven games and fell last night despite an 11-5 advantage in hits. Promising youngster Eric Hosmer had an RBI triple for the Royals in the loss. They scored three [runs] on five hits and we scored two on 11. We just couldnt get a big hit in a situation, said Royals manager Ned Yost. Jeff Francis started for Yosts squad last night and fell to 3-8 this season after he was touched for three runs and five hits in seven innings. The Royals fell to 2-6 against the National League this season and will next host the Chicago Cubs for three games over the weekend. Felipe Paulino gets the nod for the Royals this evening and is 0-0 with a 2.33 earned run average in five games (four starts) with the Royals. He was acquired from Colorado on May 26 in exchange for cash considerations after being designated for assignment on May 22, going 0-4 in 18 relief appearances for the Rockies. Paulino last pitched in Fridays 5-4 win at St. Louis and allowed four runs on five hits in six innings with five strikeouts and four walks in the no- decision -- his fifth in a row. Kansas City is 4-1 in Paulinos five trips to the hill and the right-hander owns an 0-2 record with a 4.73 ERA in five games (one start) against Arizona in his career. The DBacks won two of three at Kansas City in the last meeting between the teams in 2009, with Arizona recording back-to-back 12-5 wins to close out the set. Nike Free TR Twist. With Malaga on the verge of collecting its fourth victory in five games, Carlos Vela lifted the ball with a light touch of the head before whipping an acrobatic bicycle kick into the back of the net to equalize for the Basque side in the 89th minute. Nike Free Run+ 2. -- After opening with a Champions Tour record-tying 60 on Friday, Michael Allen didnt want to make the wrong kind of history Sunday in the final round of the Allianz Championship. http://www.nikefreerun5portugal.eu/Nike-Free-TR-Fit-ap-71.html. Miikka Kiprusoff had just announced his retirement after a decade-long run in Calgary and it would be up to Berra and Ramo to fill the void. Nike Free Run+ 3 mulheres. So when Lee made contact in the 12th inning Friday night, he knew his long-ball drought was over. "I knew I got that one," said Lee, whose leadoff homer in the bottom of inning gave the Baltimore Orioles a 5-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. barato Nike Free Run. Luongo rejoins the Panthers after having been traded to Vancouver eight seasons ago. FRANKFURT, Germany -- Hoffenheim scored three goals in quick succession late in the first half to beat Wolfsburg 6-2 in the Bundesliga on Sunday and dent its hopes of qualifying for the Champions League. In the late match, Alexander Meier scored in the 89th minute to give Eintracht Frankfurt a 2-1 comeback victory over Stuttgart, which fell to its eighth consecutive defeat and is now one place above the danger zone. Hoffenheim is the third highest scoring team in the Bundesliga after Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund and it took only four minutes for Roberto Firmino to put the host side ahead with a perfectly weighted lob. Bas Dost equalized for Wolfsburg in the 15th with a header. Niklas Suele began the three-goal flurry with a header in the 37th. Anthony Modeste then scored twice, with a low shot in the 39th and a header in the 43rd. Ivan Perisic pulled one back for Wolfsburg, before the home side struck twice more. Sejad Salihovic converted a penalty and Sven Schipplock completed the win. Wolfsburg finished with 10 men, after Christian Traesch was sent off in the 80th for a foul on Kevin Vollland that resulted in the penalty.dddddddddddd Hoffenheim, undefeated in five games, ended Wolfsburgs run of four consecutive wins and prevented the visiting team from overtaking fourth-place Schalke. Wolfsburg remained fifth and Hoffenheim 10th. In Frankfurt, Stuttgart went ahead in the 31st minute after Eintracht lost possession in midfield. Alexandru Maxim found Martin Harnik on the left and the midfielder slotted low inside the near post. Stuttgarts goalkeeper Sven Ulreich went on to make several outstanding saves, including a one-handed tip-away from a header by Stefan Aigner. But it was his kick-in that resulted in Frankfurts equalizer in the 80th through substitute striker Jan Rosenthal. Marco Russ headed the ball from the centre circle back into Stuttgarts half and Rosenthal raced through to slot past Ulreich. Eintracht secured the win in the 89th when Johannes Flum slipped the ball through the legs of Georg Niedermeier and squared it back for Meier, who drove it home with a low shot. Eintracht jumped to 12th place and is six points away from the relegation playoff place. ' ' '
