DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent wasnt drunk, as police contend, when he wrecked his Mercedes in a crash that killed a teammate, Brents lawyer told jurors Monday at the start of his trial. Brent was "guilty of being stupid behind the wheel of a car," not driving drunk on the night of the December 2012 crash that killed his close friend and teammate, Jerry Brown, defence attorney George Milner said. Milners opening remarks signalled that he would try to discredit evidence of Brents drinking central to the states case, including a blood test that allegedly pegged Brents blood alcohol content at more than twice the legal limit and dash cam video that jurors saw Monday showing Brent failing a field sobriety test at the scene. If convicted of intoxication manslaughter or manslaughter, Brent could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. Milner argued in his opening statement that the tall, lumbering Brent, who was a 320-pound lineman when he played for the Cowboys, could drink more than the average person without becoming intoxicated. "Josh Brent is as big as a house," Milner said. "Hes got a heart -- better yet a mind -- of a person much younger than he really is." Prosecutor Heath Harris said receipts would prove that on the night of the crash, Brent bought cocktails with several shots of liquor in them and three bottles of Champagne at a night club. Brent told officers right after the crash that he hadnt had any hard liquor. "This is not a difficult case, ladies and gentlemen," Harris said. "There will be no disputing the fact that he was drinking that night." Dash cam video played for the jury Monday showed an officer asking Brent about how much he had had to drink while paramedics were trying to save Brown, a linebacker on the Cowboys practice squad who was also a teammate of Brents at the University of Illinois. "Ive had a reasonable amount," Brent is heard saying on the video. The officer, Kevin Palms, testified that Brent had watery eyes, an odour of alcohol and occasional issues with speaking. The video shows a field sobriety test in which Brent occasionally stumbles as he tries to walk in a straight line and takes more steps than the officer asked. But Milner told jurors during his opening remarks that nobody could have passed a field sobriety test after such a fiery wreck. Brent suffered scrapes to his head in the crash, and the video shows him taking the test with a wrap around his head. "Nobodys going to be able to do the tricks on the side of the road" after a crash of that severity, Milner said. Milner raised several alternate reasons for Brent failing the tests: His size made it hard for him to balance, the powder from his cars air bags made his eyes watery, and the crash had a lingering impact on him. Palms started to grow exasperated as Milner repeatedly questioned why officers made him take the tests. "We gave him every opportunity to go to the hospital," Palms said. "If he says no, (paramedics) cant force him to go. Am I supposed to just let him walk home?" Brents attorney has argued his client deserves probation, and Browns mother says she has forgiven her sons college teammate and friend. But prosecutors have made Brents case a priority, and it comes on the heels of another well-publicized case in neighbouring Tarrant County in which a teenage driver was sentenced to probation in a drunken crash that killed four people. Brent, a defensive tackle, had played in all 12 games of the 2012 NFL season prior to the crash. He retired in July. Brown was signed to the Cowboys practice squad that season. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/mlb-jerseys/.m. on Friday. The NHL handed the Phoenix Coyotes enforcer an automatic suspension for leaving the bench on an illegal line change after Los Angeles Kings forward Jordan Nolan hit and injured defenceman Rostislav Klesla. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nba-jerseys/. Greg Monroe had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Andre Drummond added 10 points and a game-high 13 boards as the Pistons outrebounded the Wizards 44-35. Tests on Monday revealed some fraying of the meniscus in Vonns left knee, but no tear. The right knee turned out to be fine.If the Tampa Bay Rays ever get relocated, agent Scott Boras thinks that Montreal would be a fine place for them to land. Speaking to the Chicago Tribune at baseballs Winter Meetings in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, Boras called the former home of the Expos a "tremendous environment" for baseball. "I remember in 94, when you go back and look at their attendance rates and the market, the people and the Canadian rivalry, I really thought baseball was in a good place," Boras told the Tribune. "The players enjoyed playing there. Its a beautiful city." Boras was discussing the Rays as an example of a team that is well run and successful, but still has difficulty drawing fans to the stadium. "My point was that baseball, collectively, to protect the game, to protect the market, and you have a product that is so successful and the market is not responnding to it, what is the reason? "The reason is not the performance of the franchise or the players," Boras continued.dddddddddddd"The reason has to be theres a dynamic operating here that is not consistent with what other markets do in baseball." Boras, who represents Jacoby Ellsbury, Alex Rodriguez, and J.D. Drew among dozens of others, discussed the importance of support for a team from its local community. "Clearly if you win and youre successful, your fan base rewards. So my suggestion of New Jersey or Montreal or somewhere ... The idea is for the betterment of the game. I think we have to look at (possibly moving in) markets that arent rewarding playing the game at a high level." Boras told the Tribune that New Jersey may be difficult as an option with the Yankees and Mets already in the New York City area. ' ' '

(Sports Network) - Is it more surprising that the Cleveland Indians are off to their best start in nine years or that Asdrubal Cabrera already has three home runs in nine games? Cabrera and the Indians aim for their eighth straight victory this evening in the opener of a three-game set with the hosting Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Cleveland has won seven in a row since yielding 23 runs in back-to-back losses to the White Sox to begin the season. The Tribe are off to their best start since going 11-1 at the onset of the 2002 season and are aiming to win eight straight for the first time since Aug. 17-27, 2008. Cabrera keyed Sundays 6-4 victory over the Mariners, posting three hits and a pair of RBI. His solo homer in the first inning was his team-leading third of the season and he is also tops with nine RBI to go along with a solid .316 batting average. The shortstop hit just three homers in 97 games last year and has never hit more than six in a single season. Jack Hannahan added a solo homer and Josh Tomlin gave up three runs over 6 2/3 innings to get the win. If we play baseball the way were capable of playing, then its going to be tough for anybody to beat us, Tomlin said. Mitch Talbot takes his turn on the rubber tonight for the Indians after making his season debut last Wednesday versus Boston. Clevelands fifth starter got a no-decision as he lasted just 4 1/3 innings thanks to 102 pitches, allowing two runs with seven strikeouts in his teams 8-4 win. The 27-year-old righty won his only career start against the Angels, holding them to a run over 6 1/3 innings on April 27 of last year. Talbot was to be opposed by the Angels Dan Haren, but his start was pushed back a day after he came on in relief in Saturdays 14-inning win over the Blue Jays. Instead, 21-year-old Tyler Chatwood will make his major league debut after being recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake. The right-hander went 13-9 with a 2.84 earned run average in 27 minor league games a season ago, including 4-6 with a 3.82 ERA in 12 starts with Double-A Arkansas. He is one of our young pitchers and is a guy who has really come on the scene quickly for us, Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Angels website. He pitched very well for us this spring, and he is one of the young arms we are very excited about. Los Angeles is also expected to activate reliever Scott Downs from the disabled list today. He has been out since March 30 due to a left toe fracture and will add insurance in case Chatwood doesnt go deep. The rest of the Angels bullpen is also rested after Jered Weaver went 7 2/3 innings in Sundays 3-1 win over Toronto. Weaver struck out a career-high 15 and allowed one run, giving Los Angeles relief group a rest after it logged 9 1/3 innings in Saturdays extra-inning victory. (Toronto) is a tough lineup to face, Weaver said after improving to 7-1 lifetime against the Blue Jays. I had command of my fastball early and my slider was really sharp. It was overall a good game. Peter Bourjos hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning and Torii Hunter notched an RBI single in the first for the Angels, who have won four of five. Fernando Rodney recorded his second save of the season after working a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Cleveland won the 2010 season series by a slim 5-4 margin, with the clubs splitting six games at Angels Stadium. cheap jerseys usa. Most projections have him going in the top 10 picks. TORONTO, Ontario -- An eager group of 25 players broke camp Sunday and got ready to head overseas for final preparations for the world junior hockey championship. But only 22 will still be there when the tournament opens Dec. 26 in Malmo, Sweden. Coach Brent Sutter said the final cuts -- one defenceman and two forwards -- will be decided on many factors, including injuries. "Theyre not easy decisions, but the reality is weve got a couple-or-three guys banged up and were not exactly sure," said Sutter. "Hopefully they can skate when we get over there. "Whether theyll be ready for the first exhibition game, were not sure. All these guys deserve to be able to push to get on the team and theyre going to have a few more days to do so." The team will play three pre-tournament games -- Friday against Finland, Sunday against Sweden and the following day against Switzerland. Sutter hopes to make the cuts after the first exhibition game so he can use the full squad for the last two. The key question is high-scoring winger Jonathan Drouin, who is recovering from a concussion but who expects to resume skating when the team arrives in Sweden on Monday. Another is rushing defenceman Josh Morrissey, who has been nagged by an undisclosed injury for a month but who expects to be able to practise this week. "Theres a long time to Boxing Day and I guess it was nice to have a couple of days here to rest and work with the great staff at Hockey Canada in dealing with that problem," the Prince Albert Raiders rearguard and Winnipeg Jets prospect said. "I think in the next couple of days Ill be ready to go and back to 100 per cent." It may also be a nervy time for three so-called "underage" players in camp, 16-year-old Connor McDavid and the players listed by some as the top two prospects for the 2014 NHL draft -- forward Sam Reinhart and big defenceman Aaron Ekblad. The Canadian team rarely keeps more than one underager, but if there is ever to be three on one team it would be these ones. McDavid, a remarkable playmaker and scorer, is considered a shoo-in to go first overall in the 2015 draft. He and Ekblad are among only three players (along with John Tavares) ever to be granted "exceptional" status to enter the OHL at 15, a year earlier than other players. Reinhart is a scoring centre for the Kootenay Ice who has been captain of Canadian teams at age-group tournaments. And with the world juniors slated for Toronto and Montreal next year, one might think management will want to give them a taste of tthe tournament in Sweden to help them get ready to shine on home ice.dddddddddddd. There are 11 players in camp eligible to return for the Toronto-Montreal event. Sutter has said players will make the team on merit regardless of their age, although he also values leadership and experience. He also wants a big team. "Were certainly going to be a younger team, but it doesnt bother me at all because theyre good players," the 51-year-old coach said. "Theyre the best. "But you need to have experience with that, too. Its nice to have those guys who have been in the tournament, understand it, know how it works -- everything thats involved in a tournament of this magnitude." He used all three youngsters liberally in a 3-0 victory over a group of local university players on Saturday. McDavid scored Canadas first goal. "Im not going to think about anything other than making this team," the Erie Otters star said. "I still have a long way to go." Sutter has had McDavid and Reinhart on the same line, as he did during a summer development camp, to build chemistry between them. "Hes an easy player to play with, so smart out there," Reinhart said of McDavid. "He creates so much offensively, hes smart defensively. He makes room for his linemates. Its definitely nice playing with him." Because Reinhart turned 18 in November, he can wear a normal visor instead of the full face cage McDavid and Ekblad are required under international rules to use. The six-foot-four Ekblad will be going to his ancestral homeland. His great-grandfather was Swedish. He likes that the coaching staff doesnt seem to hold his age, 17, against him. "But I still have to prove myself," the Barrie Colt rearguard said. "So does Connor and every guy at this camp. "Everyone has to prove they have some attribute that will help Team Canada win. Thats all that matters. Theyre giving everyone a fair chance. Theres a reason everyone is here." There remains a slim chance the team will get help from the NHL, although Sutter does not expect the Calgary Flames to free up centre Sean Monahan. The Toronto Maple Leafs have until the Dec. 19 NHL roster freeze to decide whether to loan defenceman Morgan Rielly. Either player, both under 20 and therefore eligible for the tournament, would be likely snapped up eagerly by the Canadian squad, even if it means another cut or two from the group in Sweden. "Im not putting any money on the table that were going to get anybody else," said Sutter. ' ' '

YUMA, Ariz. -- Jose Canseco is making a comeback. Hes bringing his twin brother with him, too. Its not with a major league team, though. Jose and Ozzie Canseco have joined the Yuma Scorpions of the independent North American League, where theyll serve as player/coaches. Jose, who hit 462 homers in 17 big-league seasons, will serve as manager and Ozzie will be both bench coach and hitting coach. The brothers will bat third and fourth, according to the team, with Jose expected to play first base and designated hitter. Jose hasnt played in the majors for a decade, but joined the Laredo Broncos in the independent United League for 11 games last year. The North American League starts its first season on May 24. http://www.louisvuittonoutletshop.com/. Taking a look inside, he saw hundreds of baseball cards bundled with twine. The Nationals also made the long-delayed declaration Tuesday that second baseman Danny Espinosa needs some to time to heal and get his swing back. Werth was activated from the 15-day disabled list and was listed in the starting lineup, hitting second and playing right field for Tuesday nights series opener against the New York Mets.PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is trying to keep things as normal as he can these days, believing routine and repetition will lead to a sense of comfort and -- he hopes -- success. Good luck with that. Winless in North America in 2013, the Steelers (0-3) will try to snap out of their funk on Sunday in London when they face the Minnesota Vikings (0-3). While Minnesota is already overseas, Pittsburgh will remain on this side of the Atlantic until Thursday evening. By the time the Steelers arrive in London, they will have less than 48 hours to overcome jet lag and try to turn around their season. It isnt ideal, Tomlin said, but it beats the alternative. "I value normalcy in the early portions of the week from a preparation standpoint and from a practice standpoint -- use of our facilities, the comforts of home if you will," Tomlin said. Even if "home" isnt exactly comfortable these days. Pittsburgh is off to its worst start since 2000 after falling to Chicago 40-23 on Sunday night. While the beleaguered offence took a major step forward in piling up 458 yards -- the teams highest total in four years -- the Steelers also turned over the ball five times. Ben Roethlisberger threw two interceptions and fumbled twice, with two of the miscues leading to defensive touchdowns. Its the kind of sloppy play Roethlisberger has generally avoided during his 10 years at quarterback. Then again, he isnt getting much help from the guys in front of him. The Bears stunted and twisted their way into the backfield all night, leading to what Tomlin called "confusion" that gave Roethlisberger little time to get his feet set and throw. "All it takes is five to 10 (breakdowns) to produce catastrophic-like results, and thats some of the things that are occurring," he said. "Obviously, we need to strive for more consistency to minimize those things." A more productive running game would help. The Steelers actually took a significant step forward against the Bears, rushing for a season-high 80 yards, including a 25-yard burst from recently reacquired Jonathan Dwyer. While it gave Pittsburgh confidence it could run the ball, it didnt include any job security for either Dwyer or Felix Jones.dddddddddddd Both figure to head back to the bench if rookie running back LeVeon Bell makes his season debut. Bell hasnt played since spraining his right foot in a preseason game against Washington last month. He has been cleared to participate in practice, and Tomlin is "optimistic" the second-round pick will be able to run onto the field at Wembley Stadium on Sunday night. Ditto cornerback Cortez Allen, who has missed the last two weeks with an ankle injury. Slated to start after Keenan Lewis left for New Orleans in free agency, Allen has been slowed almost from the start of training camp. He missed three weeks following a minor knee procedure before the ankle issues popped up. Though William Gay did a solid, if not, spectacular job in Allens absence, Allen has an ability to make things happen when he plays. The Steelers are the only team in the NFL not to create a turnover through the seasons first three weeks. Allen had a hand in two turnovers in the 2012 regular-season finale against Cleveland, the last time Pittsburgh was able to pry the ball away. And for all the progress the Steelers saw in certain areas against Chicago -- including a more consistent pass rush, and wide receiver Antonio Browns career-high 196 yards receiving -- the biggest issue is valuing the football. Pittsburgh hasnt done that through 12 quarters. The Steelers minus-9 turnover margin is tied with the Giants for the worst in the league. Tomlin doesnt like to lay blame in any one place, but allowed that Roethlisberger needs to keep himself and his team out of situations that lead to mistakes. "I expect Ben to be better, Ben expects himself to be better," Tomlin said. "Well continue to work to do that." NOTES: Tomlin said DE Brett Keisel and NT Steve McLendon are dealing with hamstring issues but are expected to play. ... TE Heath Miller, who had three receptions in his return from right knee surgery, will have an expanded role against Minnesota if there are no setbacks this week. ... Tomlin has no concerns about the turf at Wembley Stadium, saying punter Zoltan Mesko -- who played there for New England last season -- called it "awesome." ' ' '

With less than a week until the NHL Trade Deadline, check out the latest trade-related reports and speculation from around the NHL beat. And follow TSN.ca right through Deadline Day for all the updates. Waiting Last Minute As per Arthur Staple of Newsday, barring a cant refuse offer from anyone in the next few days, New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow will go as close to the 3pm et deadline on Wednesday as possible to entice better offers for both Thomas Vanek and Andrew MacDonald. He adds that as games go on through the weekend, the number of suitors for MacDonald could go up. Staple also writes that the Islanders have no intention of trading goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. High Asking Price Chris Botta of The New York Times adds that the Islanders are asking for a first-round pick for MacDonald. He adds that theres a lot of interest in MacDonald, but CSNNE.com adds that such a demand is too much for the Boston Bruins, who are reportedly looking for a blueliner. Interest In Stewart? According to Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Sun, the Senators have an interest in St. Louis Blues winger Chris Stewart. Garrioch adds that Stewart could be part of a deal with the New York Rangers if the Blues are interested in Ryan Callahan. Staying The Course Larry Brooks of The New York Post writes that Rangers general manager Glen Sather and his front office are devoting their attention to evaluating personnel who might become available in trades for Ryan Callahan and Dan Girardi, with no progress made toward signing them to contract extensions. No Ones Business As Rich Chere of The Star-Ledger writes, no one should expect New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur to announce publicly that he wants to be traded. Brodeur explained to Chere that he wont even wont say so unless a deal actually happens - and he hasnt even discussed the situation with general manager Lou Lamoriello. "Oh, no. Its not going to be like that. I dont think so, anyway," Brodeur told the paper. "Its nobody elses business but mine as for the direction I want to go. "Its been tough because you go through ups and downs. The more questions Im asked, sometimes my answers change. Thats why in the last few weeks Ive been more quiet about it. Its on purpose, because I want to make sure my decision is an educated decision and there are no influences from the outside. Show up Thursday and youll know if Im on the plane to Detroit (where the Devils play Friday)." Chere also writes that Jaromir Jagr, who doesnt have a no-trade clause, hasnt spoken to Lamoriello about a trade option. "The one thing that is good about this team is we dont have much media coverage," Jagr told Chere. "Less media, less rumors and less trade rumors. I havent even heard any rumors. "Hey, Ive been traded twice during the season. From Dallas to Boston and to New York from Washington. Going to the Rangers from Washington, they told me they were trying to trade me so I was kind of expecting it. The last one, Dallas to Boston, I was surprised. For me its easier than somebody with a big family. I pack my stuff and go, if something happens. Or not go." No Change Of Heart Katie Carrera of The Washington Post reports that, to little surprise, Capitals forward Martin Erat is still looking to get out. Erat, back from representing the Czech Republic in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, said Wednesday he still wants the Capitals to trade him but declined to elaborate further. Capitals GM George McPhee said earlier this week that he planned to approach Erat again but didnt expect him to change of mind. The Pro Bowl linebacker insisted the Chicago Bears are loaded and ready to meet soaring expectations after one of their busiest offseasons in recent memory. New general manager Phil Emery replaced the fired Jerry Angelo and immediately went to work, acquiring Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall from Miami and adding depth throughout the roster. "I think we have the talent now to reach our expectations," Urlacher said Wednesday. "And we always say it because its the right thing to say, but I really think we can do it this year." Besides adding some key pieces, quarterback Jay Cutler and Pro Bowl running back Matt Forte are healthy after injuries cut short their seasons. Urlacher is feeling better, too. He was basically an observer during off-season workouts and minicamp after spraining his knee in the final game against Minnesota, and he and coach Lovie Smith said there will be no limitations once practice starts on Thursday. "Hes ready to go," Smith said. "Were cautious with players when theyre not fit and full-speed ready to go, but once we get them out there, were never trying to take out any of our players in practice." Urlacher said his knee is fine and he expects to participate in every practice, except for the occasional day off from Smith. Urlachers health could go a long way toward determining whether the Bears meet their goals after a disappointing 8-8 finish. They were sailing along and seemed poised for another playoff run after reaching the NFC championship game the previous season before unraveling. Cutlers broken right thumb late in a win over San Diego on Nov. 20 ruined a 7-3 start and sent them on a five-game losing streak. It didnt help, either, that Forte sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee against Kansas City on Dec. 4 and missed the rest of the season. By the time Urlacher was injured against Minnesota in a collision with teammate Major Wright, the Bears were out of contention. That injury aside, Urlacher shows no signs of slowing down. At 34, he made his eighth Pro Bowl last year and played in all 16 games for the 10th time in his first 12 seasons. The only years he didnt were when he missed seven games in 2004 because of injuries and whhen he sat out almost the entire 2009 season after dislocating his right wrist in the opener at Green Bay.dddddddddddd He remains a leader on a defence that features Pro Bowl players in defensive end Julius Peppers, linebacker Lance Briggs and cornerback Charles Tillman but also has some question marks. Age is one. The defensive line and secondary are two more. The Bears ranked fifth against the run but 28th against the pass because the line simply didnt create enough havoc at times. Peppers had 11 sacks, but with inconsistent play up front, Chicago tied for 19th with just 33 overall. The Bears drafted defensive end Shea McClellin in the first round hoping he could take some of the load off the veteran, but the interior linemen need to step up, too. "They stepped up last year," Urlacher said. "Were kind of thin up there right now. Im not sure what guys are going to be (where), but theyve done good. Henry (Melton) is an explosive guy. (Matt Toeaina) is solid, always in his gap. Weve lost (Anthony Adams), so we have to find somebody to replace him, but theyve done a good job the last couple of years." The Bears need more, particularly with Urlacher, Peppers, Briggs and Tillman in their 30s. Theyve shown no signs of slowing down, but how much longer they can stay at that level remains to be seen. For now, the goals are high. The Bears believe they can compete with Green Bay and Detroit in the NFC North and make a playoff run after coming up short last year. Now, its on them to back it up. ""Theres a sense of urgency every year," said Urlacher, who has an expiring contract. "Its a new team every single year. There are guys gone, guys get cut or ... traded. Every year, theres a sense of urgency." Notes: Forte wasnt in the most talkative mood on Wednesday afternoon. He gave several rather short answers about his new four-year contract, camp and the team to reporters trailing him as he left the dining hall. When someone mentioned that he didnt seem too happy, Forte said, "I dont like having you around me. Im trying to go get my playbook, you know? Talk to yall later." ... The Bears placed WR Johnny Knox on the active/physically unable to perform list on Wednesday. Knox is recovering from a gruesome back injury last season. ' ' '

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - David DeJesus clubbed two home runs as the Oakland Athletics beat the Indians 3-1 in a pitching duel between two unbeaten pitchers, Josh Tomlin and Trevor Cahill. Cliff Pennington and Coco Crisp got the only other hits for the Athletics, who have won five of their last seven contests while evening up a three-game series with the Indians. Cahill (5-0) got the best of the two pitchers, though, allowing just one run on five hits and striking out five batters for Oakland. It was a fortunate day where I came up big, Cahill said. The bullpen came in and was solid and we got some good hits. It was really a team win. Tomlin (4-1) was charged with the hard-luck loss for the Indians, despite allowing just three runs -- two earned -- on three hits with no walks and five strike outs. Travis Hafner drove in the lone run for Cleveland, which had a seven-game win streak snapped. Good teams battle, Tomlin said. Thats what we have to do and we did that tonight. Well come back. Well battle back. DeJesus first homer came in the first, but the Indians tied it back up in the third. Grady Sizemore doubled to lead off the frame, moved to second on Carlos Santanas walk and scored on Hafners bloop single. However in the fourth, Oakland regained the lead, 2-1, on DeJusus second homer of the game, which stopped a streak of eight batters retired in a row by Tomlin. The Athletics got their first non-Dejesus hit in the eighth when Pennington ripped a comeback single to put runners on the corners. That chased Tomlin off the mound and Tony Sipp came in to serve an insurance RBI single to Crisp. Up by two runs, Grant Balfour pitched a shutout ninth to get his first save of the season. Wheeler scored two goals, including the winner, as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Minnesota Wild 6-4 on Friday in a game that featured a seven-goal first period. Wheeler ended a scramble in front of the Minnesota net when he poked the puck under a prone Niklas Backstrom with 9:20 remaining in the third period for his 14th goal of the season, giving the Jets a 5-4 lead. It was the ninth goal in December for Wheeler, who started the season with just five goals in his first 28 games. "I think confidence plays into it," he said of his recent success. "When the puck starts going in the net you find yourself getting into the scoring areas a little bit more. The puck seems to bounce your way a little bit more." Evander Kane, Olli Jokinen, Dustin Byfuglien and Toby Enstrom added goals for Winnipeg. Dany Heatley, Justin Fontaine, Stephane Veilleux and Mikko Koivu were the goal scorers for Minnesota. The Jets (17-18-5), who were coming off a humbling loss in Edmonton on Monday, finally managed to beat the Wild after losing each of the first three meetings between the teams. It was a fourth straight loss for the Wild (20-14-5), who have now dropped six of their last eight games. Neither team seemed interested in playing defence after the three-day Christmas break. The Jets led 4-3 after a first period that saw seven goals scored in the first 7:04, and featured three lead changes. "We dont have the luxury of finding reasons for things not being OK," said Wild coach Mike Yeo, who said the first period was clearly a by-product of the extended break. "Were in a position where we have to make things right." Minnesota struck first when Heatley scored on a wide-open net after a pass from Jason Pominville 2:13 into the game. But the Jets grabbed the lead before the game was six minutes old thanks to a short-handed goal by Kane and a one-timer in the low slot byy Jokinen.dddddddddddd "When they scored we responded, which was good to see," Kane said. It only took another 67 seconds for the Wild to go ahead 3-2, on goals by Fontaine and Veilleux. That ended Ondrej Pavelecs outing. The Jets starting goalie smashed his stick en route to the dressing room after allowing three goals on six shots, giving way to backup Al Montoya. Jets coach Claude Noel said the quick hook had more to do with his teams sluggish play in its own zone than anything. "I think our team needed a jolt," he said. Jets captain Andrew Ladd echoed the coach, saying that the team felt sympathy for the lack of support they provided for their goalkeeper. "I thought Monty did a great job once he got in there," Ladd said. "The first three goals, there was nothing Pav couldve done about them, so it was more about trying to get some momentum for our group on the bench." After nearly eight scoreless minutes, the Jets once again claimed the lead on late-period goals from Wheeler and Byfuglien. Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom allowed four goals on 11 first-period shots, and finished with 32 saves on 37 total shots. The lone goal in the second period came on a Wild power play, as a perfect passing sequence ended with an easy goal for Koivu to tie the game at 4-4. That was the only blemish for Montoya, who stopped the other 22 shots he faced. Enstrom added an empty-net goal from 175 feet with four seconds remaining. The Wild won each of the three previous meetings by one goal, including a shootout victory on Nov. 23. Both clubs return to action on Sunday, with the Jets travelling to Denver while the Wild head home to face the New York Islanders. Notes: Zach Parise, dealing with a lower-body injury, missed a second straight game for the Wild. ... Lines are shuffling around the league, giving some new opportunities. Scott Cullen has notes on Brandon Prust, Daniel Alfredsson, Mason Raymond, Ryan Kesler, Jeff Skinner and more. Before the notes, a link to Fridays chat. 1. Canadiens LW Max Pacioretty will be out for the next three weeks with a hamstring strain, a notable loss for the Habs. Against Columbus Thursday, Brandon Prust moved up to play with Tomas Plekanec and Brian Gionta, and Prust played 18:12, his second-highest ice time in 45 games since joining the Canadiens last season. 2. The Detroit Red Wings have already tried Justin Abdelkader and Todd Betuzzi on the right side with Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, but Thursday night, they gave Daniel Alfredsson a spin in that spot and Alfredsson finished with three assists, giving him nine points in his first eight games with the Red Wings. Judging by the first two guys tried on that wing, there may have been some thought that Datsyuk and Zetterberg needed a physical player to help carve out space, but Alfredsson has the sense to play with elite players and if he stays productive, its conceivable he could hold this spot for a while. 3. When the Toronto Maple Leafs extended a pro tryout offer to LW Mason Raymond, it was a no-brainer. Even with declining production, it was puzzling why Raymond hadnt been given a free agent contract somewhere in the league over the summer, so the Leafs got a bit of a rewards with their low-risk investment when he Raymond was still deemed NHL-worthy and signed a one-year, $1-million contract. Raymond has been slightly better than NHL-worthy for the Leafs, however. He has eight points in eight games and is playing a career-high 18:13 per game, skating on the top line in the last couple games in the absence of injured winger James van Riemsdyk. Raymond scored a career-high 25 goals and 53 points in 2009-2010, but his production has fallen since. In a related story, he broke his back during the 2011 Stanley Cup Final, against Boston, when Bruins D Johnny Boychuk crumpled him into the boards. This strong start to the season is obviously a positive for Raymond and his shots on goal per game (2.75) is close to his career peak, so his production should have some sustainability, but expectations have to be managed. Hes scored more than 40 points once in his career, so approaching that level would have to be considered a success and who knows how Raymonds ice time will sort out once the Leafs get a full complement of forwards. Add van Riemsdyk, David Clarkson and Nikolai Kulemin back into the mix and suddenly there isnt so much ice time to go around. 4. New Vancouver coach John Tortorella hasnt been afraid to shake up the lines, giving Ryan Kesler a regular turn with the Sedins in Thursdays win over Buffalo. Kesler scored a pair of goals and while he only has three goals and no assists through eight games, Kesler does have 31 shots on goal, his 3.88 per game easily a career high. Mike Santorelli skated between Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen, a spot that would normally be occupied by Kesler, and added a couple of assists, though it was the first time in a week that Santorelli had played less than 20 minutes in a game. 5. Hurricanes LW Jeff Skinner is off to a phenomenal start to the season, one that deserves to be noticed. He has eight points in eight games, averaging a career-high 4.0 shots on goal per game, while playing with checkers Riley Nash and Radek Dvorak at even strength. Skinner is on the top power play unit, so hes going to get his chances to score, but if he continues to generate shots at even-strength, Skinner is going to get his points, no matter with whom he plays. 6. A couple of No. 1 defencemen have been hurt on hits into the dasher boards in the corner of the defensive zone. Sharks D Dan Boyle was laid out by Blues agitator Maxim Lapierre and now the Sharks have to make do without Boyle while he recovers. Matt Irwin, Jason Demers and Justin Braun are all candidates to handle more PP time in Boyles absence. Red Wings D Niklas Kronwall was flattened by Avalanche LW Cody McLeod, which may leave a bigger hole on the Detroit power play. Jakub Kindl is the one other Detroit defenceman who has seen significant power play time this year. Maybe Brendan Smith could come out of the press box and offer something with the man advantage, but the Red Wings other defenders -- Kyle Quincey, Jonathan Ericsson, Danny DeKeyser, Brian Lashoff -- arent necessarily cut out for the power play QB role. 7. Sticking in Detroit, Jonas Gustavsson has performed at a high level in relief of injured starter Jimmy Howard. Its only three games, compared to 114 games of subpar play prior to this season, but Gustavsson has stopped 102 of 107 shots for a .953 save percentage this season. 8.The Ottawa Senators have shaken up their scoring lines, moving Cory Conacher to the wing with Jason Spezza and dropping Bobby Ryan to play with Kyle Turris and Clarke MacArthur. For his part, Spezza is coming off back-to-back three-point games and, considering I noted how he was getting eaten up possession-wise early in the year, its at least positive that hes putting up points. Those possession stats can still get better. What may be more intriguing is what comes from the second line, where Turris and MacArthur have already been posting top-drawer possession stats, so Ryan adds some finishing skill to that line. 10. As the Edmonton Oilers were going through some concern over their goaltending, given Devan Dubnyks slow start, the rumour mill hit overdrive and prompted a question from TSN radio host Dave Naylor to TSN Insider Darren Dreger about whether the Oilers would consider a Nail Yakupov-for-James Reimer deal. Dregers response stunned me because, as much as James Reimer doesnt need to be moved out at the earliest possible opportunity, if he would bring the Maple Leafs a 20-year-old who was the first overall pick less than a year-and-a-half ago, I couldnt imagine the justification for passing it up. Hes not proven? Yakupov is more proven than Leafs D Morgan Rielly and Im sure that the Leafs would deal Reimer before surrendering Rielly. The other part of any Oilers goaltender trade talk is that many of the names mentioned -- Reimer, Brian Elliott, Michal Neuvirth -- arent necessarily an upgrade on the guy they already have. Certainly not a significant enough upgrade to sacrifice a potential game-breaking goal-scorer. In any case, Dubnyk stopped 37 of 40 shots against the Islanders Thursday, so he may not be the Oilers only concern. 11. 25-year-old Oilers rookie C Mark Arcobello has stepped into Edmontons lineup and made an immediate impact, with eight assists in eight games, playing more than 21 minutes in each of the last two games. The question, when trying to assess Arcobellos contributions going forward, is where he will fit on the depth chart once Sam Gagner returns from his broken jaw. If the Oilers are already having trouble finding room for scorers in their top six, how will they sort out the lineup to keep Arcobello in a productive spot? 12. Its always worth watching who the Islanders are playing with John Tavares. Lately, its been RW Kyle Okposo and LW Michael Grabner, leaving Matt Moulson to skate with Peter Regin and Cal Clutterbuck. If thats Moulsons destiny this season, then hell be hard-pressed to have a fourth 30-goal season. 13. Wild G Josh Harding has been outstanding (1.15 GAA, .946 SV%, 6 GP), seeing more action with Niklas Backstrom injured. Backstrom played too much last season, getting into 42 of 48 games, so if Harding is a strong option, that could balance the playing time scales somewhat. If Harding could handle 30-plus starts at a high level, well, that would improve Minnesotas playoff chances. 14. The Bruins have demoted Brad Marchand to the third line, moving Reilly Smith into a spot on the wing with Patrice Bergeron and Loui Eriksson. Smith has three points in the last three games, including the game-winning goal in the final minute, as he played a season-high 14:56 against the Florida Panthers Thursday night. 15. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was lamenting Chicagos lack of offence after a 3-2 shootout loss to St. Louis Thursday. My humble suggestion: how about playing C Brandon Pirri more than 9:34? Pirri scored his first NHL goal against the Blues and has 78 points in 79 AHL games since the start of last season. Hes due for a legitimate look in a scoring role. CHIRPING"I wasnt expecting us to get 40 on net tonight, but what we do so well is even though we dont get the most amount of shots, we capitalize on our chances and that was the case." - Maple Leafs G James Reimer, after Toronto beat Minnesota 4-1, despite being outshot 37-14. "Its just disgusting to see that type of play in hockey, when a player that probably shouldnt even be in this league is taking out one of the best players in the world." - Sharks C Logan Couture, after Blues RW Maxim Lapierre knocked out Sharks D Dan Boyle. "Tough training camp, tough start ot the year. Probably could have done more work this summer." - Darryl Sutter on Kings D Slava Voynov. "Its great to know I have the record but tonight wasnt our best effort. The wheels have really fallen off for us as these losses have piled up." - Oilers LW Taylor Hall, who scored two goals in eight seconds, on Edmontons loss to the New York Islanders. (Sports Network) - The Ottawa Senators will try to avoid falling into a 2-0 hole in their second-round series tonight when they face the Pittsburgh Penguins at the CONSOL Energy Center. Dont miss all the action on TSN Radio 1050 and TSN.ca/Toronto beginning at 7:30pm et/4:30pm pt. You can also chat and get updates from TSNs hockey personalities with TSN.cas Game Night blog on the TSN GameTracker. The top-seeded Penguins breezed to victory in the opener of this best-of-seven series on Tuesday, claiming a 4-1 decision over the visiting Senators. On Friday, Pittsburgh will try to improve to 4-1 on home ice in this postseason and grab a 2-0 lead in the series before it shifts to Ottawa for Games 3 and 4. Evgeni Malkin paced Pittsburghs offense in the opener, as he continued his stellar postseason play with a goal and an assist. Malkin registered at least one point in all six games of Pittsburghs first-round victory over the New York Islanders and added two more in the Game 1 triumph to push his point total to 13 (3G, 10A). Only Bostons David Krejci has more points this postseason with 14 on five goals and nine assists. Meanwhile, Tomas Vokoun will get the start again in Game 2 for the Penguins. He recorded his third straight victory on Tuesday since replacing Marc-Andre Fleury prior to Game 5 against the Isles. The veteran netminder made 35 saves in Game 1 and has turned away 101-of-105 shots since taking over between the pipes. "Vokoun, since hes come in, hes been great," Pittsburgh forward Jarome Iginla said. "You can tell hes feeling good, and I think its definitely a good situation to have as a team when you have two confident goaltenders like we have." Chris Kunitz also notched a goal and an assist, with Paul Martin and Pascal Dupuis potting the other goals for the Penguins, who finished 2-for-4 on the power play and added a short-handed goal in the victory. Dupuis has six goals in seven playoff games this spring, tying him with Chicagos Patrick Sharp for the postseason lead. "I think hes always had the speed and strength, but hes going to a lot of tough areas and hes getting opportunities to put it in the back of the net," Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said of Dupuis. The seventh-seeded Senators, who beat Montreal in five games during the opening round, fell to 2-2 on the road in the 2013 playoffs after dropping Game 1 in Pittsburgh. Colin Greening scored the lone Ottawa goal, while Craig Anderson was tagged for all four goals on 30 shots for the Senators, who failed to score on all five of their power-play opportunities. "The difference of the game is obviously the execution of their power play," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean lamented. "And giving up a shorthanded goal accentuates our special-teams play much more." Ottawa hit on 6-of-25 chances with the man advantage in Round 1 against Montreal. Senators head coach Paul MacLean confirmed that Eric Gryba is out and Andre Benoit is in for Game 2. As well, Guillaume Latendresse will play for Zack Kassian. Jason Spezza is nearing a return from back surgery, but Ottawas top centerman has been ruled out for Fridays game. Spezza hasnt played since the fifth game of the season, but he could be ready to jump back on the ice when the series heads to Canadas capital city. The Senators will host Game 3 on Sunday. This is the fourth all-time playoff series between the clubs. Ottawa won the first encounter in the 2007 conference quarterfinals, before Pittsburgh ousted the Sens from the first round in 2008 and 2010. The Penguins won all three meetings with Ottawa during the regular season. http://www.demarcuswarebroncosjersey.com/.p.h. The veteran left-hander kept the Chicago White Sox guessing and had them off-balance for most of the day. The result: a 4-1 Kansas City Royals victory Wednesday that allowed them to win two of three at U.ZAGREB, Croatia -- Marin Cilic from Croatia overcame problems with his serve to win the Zagreb Indoors tournament on Sunday, defeating top-seeded Tommy Haas from Germany 6-3, 6-4. Fifth-seeded Cilic gained his fourth title in Zagreb and became the third Croat overall to win at least 10 career titles. Cilic also lifted his career record in Zagreb to 22-4, winning 20 of his last 21 matches at the event. Cilic -- champion here in 2009, 10 and last year -- struggled with his first serve in the opening set but played some great returns with a solid baseline performance. The 35-year-old Haas broke in the first game but then lost five out of the next six. Haas also wasted a break point forr a 4-2 lead in the second set, allowing Cilic to step up the pressure and gain a 5-3 lead.dddddddddddd Haas saved a match point, but Cilic made sure he used the second opportunity. "Its nice to be in the finals after the tough last year I had," Cilic said. "I played (under) great pressure." Haas in turn said Marin "played big points better." Cilics coach Goran Ivanisevic has 22 titles and Ivan Ljubicic has 10. Cilic and Haas are tied 2-2 in head-to-heads. Making the Zagreb final was Haas best performance this year, after he lost in the opening rounds in Auckland and at the Australian Open. Haas won his last title in Vienna last year. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Toronto FC thought long and hard about bringing Dwayne De Rosario home. The teams all-time leading scorer, DeRo has won everything there is to win in MLS. But the former league MVP is 35 and made a whopping US$654,300 last season. Plus he left Toronto on bad terms in 2011. In the end, the conclusion was the attacking midfielder would be a welcome asset if he were to agree to a new role and reduced contract number. It seems everyone is on the same page, with Toronto choosing the former D.C. United star in Stage 2 of the MLS re-entry draft Wednesday. The move came after some careful discussion. "Tim B (general manager Tim Bezbatchenko) and I got on the phone with Dwayne a couple of weeks ago and had a good hour conversation about what it is he wants to do, what happened here (in his first stint) and where were trying to go," Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment boss Tim Leiweke told The Canadian Press on Wednesday. "And we aired it all out." The next step was for De Rosario to speak to manager Ryan Nelsen, to hear his vision for the future. While Toronto had yet to get his signature on a contract as of the re-entry draft announcement, Leiweke talked as if a deal was all but done. "I think (Bezbatchenko) and Dwayne and Dwaynes agent did a very good job of trying to find a fair deal," he said. "And to Dwaynes credit, he understands that if this is about winning, we had to have enough room left within our (salary) cap to add a couple more pieces here. "And I believe they have found a deal that will do that ... A lot of credit to Dwayne. He probably could get paid more elsewhere. But he chose to come to Toronto because he likes what were building here. And boy is that a change. "For a guy that left because he didnt like what we were doing, to come back because he likes what were doing, I think says an awful lot about Tim B and Nellie and the job theyve done this off-season." Teams have seven days to make a "bona fide offer" to players selected in Stage 2 of the re-entry draft. If an agreement cant be reached, the club holds the right of first refusal for that player in MLS. De Rosario became available when D.C. United opted not to pick up his option at the end of the season. Playing for the leagues worst team in 2013, the Canadian had three goals and two assists in 24 games. De Rosario currently ranks sixth on the all-time MLS scoring list with 103 goals. Contrast that with the current TFC roster, which has a combined 37 career MLS goals. Money has played a key role in De Rosarios history with Toronto. In his first go-round at Toronto, he made US$443,750 in 2010 while fellow Canadian Julian de Guzman made $1.7 million as a designated player. It seemed an inequity to everyone but Toronto FC, with player and club disagreeing whether there had been an agreement to rewrite his contract. De Rosario shone a spotlight on his money concerns when he celebrated a goal in a 3-2 home loss to the San Jose Earthquakes in September 2010 by pretending to sign a cheque. He later apologized for the move, which Tom Anselmi, then MLSE executive vice-president and COO, called disappointing and unacceptable. Two games into the 2011 season, he was traded to the New York Red Bulls. The De Rosario selection Wednesday was the latest in a flurry of TFC moves. Brazilian striker Gilberto is on board as a designated player with England and Spurs striker Jermain Defoe expected to announce his allegiance in the January transfer window. Toronto has also acquired MLS experience in the form of Brazilian midfielder Jackson and defender Justin Morrow while picking up draft picks in trading away the rights of goalkeeper Stefan Frei and midfielder Bobby Convey. Toronto is not looking for DeRo to be the face of the team. That job will fall to its final designated player signing -- read Defoe, if all goes well. De Rosarios role on the field will likely be that as a third striker, while playing a veterans role in the locker-room. Signing DeRo would be seen by many local fans as righting a past wrong. It also helps signal that Toronto is a worthy destination. As Nelsen said at the Gilberto signing, players look to the future rather than the post. Which is good considering Torontos MLS record since De Rosario was traded away is 16-50-34. Much has changed since then. Only two players (Ashtone Morgan and Doneil Henry) remain from the matchday 18 of De Rosarios last game in a Toronto shirt -- a 2-0 win over Portland on March 26, 2011. De Rosario has also matured. For years, he looked to protect his own brand. A playmaker with a scoring touch, De Rosario is a game changer who can carve open a defence for a teammate, or score himself with his feet or head, from inside or outside the penalty box Because of his passport and other vagaries, he never made it in Europe. While he became a star in MLS, for a long time he believed he was not getting the compensation or recognition he deserved. These days, he seems more comfortable in his own skin. During a Canadian national team camp last January in Arizona, De Rosario went out of his way to help a roster of young teammates. When fullback Andres Fresenga was writhing in agony after being scythed down in a tackle, De Rosario was there to see if he was OK -- even though he was on the opposing team. After the session, he made a point of connecting with every single teammate. He can do the same in Toronto, which is home to young Canadian internationals in Kyle Bekker, Henry, Morgan and Jonathan Osorio. "Hes not going to necessarily be THE guy," Leiweke said of De Rosario. "But hes a team player and he wants to win and he made that clear to us. I was very impressed by that. "He doesnt talk about going out in style because I dont think he thinks like that. But I think he wants to win. And he knows were really committed to it here. "And were ferocious at chasing guys now that can help is get this team into the playoffs." The team does not expect De Rosario to become a wall flower "Look I dont mind the fact that were building a team with personality," said Leiweke. "I like that. I like teams with personality. I also understand that we take a bit of risk here as to what if it doesnt work out. "But I believe in the conversation we had with him, there will be enough understanding and communication with him where he understands his role and accepts it. And thrives to be the guy to teach young kids how to win." Leiweke also recognized De Rosario gives the team "more of a home-town Canadian feel thats important to us." The 13-year MLS veteran has played 324 regular-season and 24 playoff games in MLS. He started his career with San Jose and Houston, winning four league titles. Toronto first acquired De Rosario in 2009 from Houston in exchange for defender Julius James and allocation money. He went on to score 27 goals in 57 games for Toronto, a club record, before being traded early in the 2011 season by then head coach Aron Winter and director of player development Paul Mariner. "I am sorry to the wonderful and passionate fans at TFC about my departure to NY Red Bulls," De Rosario said at the time in a post on his Facebook fan page. "Just wanted to say it has truly been an honour coming back home & playing for my home crowd." De Rosario, who had scored 15 of Torontos 33 goals in 2010, was shipped out in exchange for midfielder Tony Tchani, defender-midfielder Danleigh Borman and a first-round pick. He finished 2011 with D.C. United, winning the Golden Boot as the leagues top scorer and MVP honours. De Rosario became the first player in MLS history to score for three different teams in one year. He also was the first MVP in North American pro sports history to play for three different teams in one season, according to MLS. A finalist for MVP in 2005 and 2006, he has been chosen to the leagues Best XI six times. De Rosario has captured MLS Goal of the Year honours twice, in 2004 and 2005. He won the MLS Cup in 2001 and 2003 with San Jose and 2006 and 2007 with Houston, earning MLS Cup MVP honours in 2001 and 2007. He is a member of the select club of 100-goal snipers in MLS. He even set a record for fastest league hat trick (goals in the 22nd, 27th and 31st minutes against Real Salt Lake in 2012). He turned pro at age 18 in 1997, signing with the Toronto Lynx of the A-League. D.C. United opened Wednesdays draft by taking Red Bulls forward Fabian Espindola before choosing Canadian international defender Nana Attakora. The Vancouver Whitecaps selected midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy (San Jose). Former Whitecaps forward Corey Hertzog went to Seattle. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/mlb-jerseys/. - Philippe Cadorette made 30 saves as the Baie-Comeau Drakkar shut out the Shawinigan Cataractes 2-0 in the lone Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game Tuesday. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nhl-jerseys/. Nine-year veteran Danny Granger did not make his debut with the Clippers because of a technicality on the teams active list, which is signed by coach Doc Rivers before every game and relayed to the officials. Grangers name was printed by hand by a member of the public relations staff under the heading: "Updated Roster Additions," but the number on the sheet was not circled along with the other active players by the required deadline of 6:30 p. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nike-nfl-jerseys/. -- The New Orleans Saints have placed the franchise tag on Drew Brees -- giving them exclusive negotiating rights with their Pro Bowl quarterback for the next year. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nba-jerseys/. The Englishman, ranked No. 543, holed his approach to the par-4 No. 17 for an eagle and made five birdies in a faultless round that left him two strokes ahead of Paraguays Fabrizio Zanotti and Englands Richard McEvoy. SAN DIEGO -- Jason Kubel and the Arizona Diamondbacks made spacious Petco Park look like a hitters park. Kubel hit two of Arizonas four home runs to help the Diamondbacks beat San Diego 8-5 Saturday night, snapping a seven-game losing streak against the Padres. Aaron Hill and Justin Upton had solo homers as Arizona finished with 15 hits. Uptons home run went an estimated 443 feet to dead centre field. "Its still a big park," Upton said. "We just got into a few balls and they carried." Upton had a season-high four hits and Jake Elmore added two RBIs as the Diamondbacks closed to 5 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the second NL wild-card berth. "Its nice to finally beat these guys," Kubel said. "It seems like a really long time. We really need wins, as many as we can get, and this is a start." Kubel hit a two-run homer in the first inning. Hill led off the third with his 22nd homer before Kubel followed two pitches later for his career-high 29th home run. "We came out swinging the bats, everybody really," Kubel said. "We scored early and kept it going." Upton connected off Miles Mikolas in the fifth inning on a line drive that gave the Diamondbacks a 7-4 lead. "To be honest with you, I was trying to hit the ball back up the middle and he left the ball up," said Upton. "I wont say it was a no-doubter over the fence, but I knew it was going to carry to at least the fence." Rookie Wade Miley (15-9) won despite giving up five runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. The left-hander struck out six and had three walks to snap his streak of 24 consecutive starts without issuing more than two walks. "I got frustrated early and stayed frustrated," Miley said. "I threw pitches in middle of the plate and they made me pay." Said Upton: "Hes been good for us all year, and it was our turn to return the favour. It was nice." J.J. Putz struck out the side in the ninth for his 29thh save in 34 chances.dddddddddddd San Diego had outscored the Diamondbacks 48-25 during the seven-game win streak. The Padres, who came in having won 13 of 17 games, lost at home for just the sixth time in 23 games. "When we made a mistake, they had a pretty good swing at it," San Diego manager Bud Black said. "Even when we made some pitches, they had some good swings." Kubel broke out of a recent slump with his fourth multi-homer game this season. He was batting just .140 (6 for 43) in his last 14 games. "Lately, its been coming around and I have been hitting balls harder," Kubel said. "Its starting to feel better, more consistent. Just hoping to keep the feeling going." Both of Kubels homers and Hills home run came off rookie Casey Kelly (1-1), who only lasted into the third inning in his third major-league start. Kelly, a prized prospect acquired by the Padres from Boston in the Adrian Gonzalez trade, was hit hard for the second straight start. The righty allowed six runs and eight hits in 2 1-3 innings. "Obviously today, you never want it to happen," Kelly said. "But at the same time, Im going to learn a lot from this. Its just going to make me better down the road." After Kubel hit a two-run homer in the first, Jesus Guzman got San Diego even with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. Logan Forsythe hit a two-run homer for San Diego in the fourth to cut Arizonas lead to 6-4. NOTES: Kubel has 10 multi-homer games in his career. ... Miley has given up more than three earned runs only six times in 25 starts. ... San Diego LF Carlos Quentin missed his second straight game and third this week with right knee irritation. ... Padres starting pitcher Clayton Richard was back with the team after his wife, Ashley, gave birth to a son. ..
