ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues placed star forward Alex Steen on the injured list Saturday because of a concussion and are cautiously optimistic. General manager Doug Armstrong said the NHLs No. 2 goal scorer will be out indefinitely. Armstrong announced the move, made retroactive to Dec. 21, in a statement before the teams game with Chicago. "I say indefinitely because it could be day to day or week to week," Armstrong said during the morning skate. "Theres no set timetable, but he is exercising and we hope he has a speedy recovery." Steen hasnt played since he left a game against Edmonton on Dec. 21 with what the team called an "upper-body injury." Its the second concussion with the Blues for Steen, who will not accompany the team on a two-game trip to Dallas and Minnesota. "Were going to want to take our time," Armstrong said. "Were hoping that its not a long-term thing." Steen is the Blues leading scorer with 24 goals and 38 points in 35 games. He has six game-winning goals, second most in the league. The Blues believe Steens symptoms began with a hit by Ottawas Zack Smith on Dec. 16. Smith was penalized for an illegal check to the head but the NHL did not review the play. Steen also took a high hit from the Canadiens Douglas Murray on Dec. 19 and the last came from former teammate David Perron of Edmonton. "Hes such a big part of our team," said forward Jaden Schwartz, who has taken Steens spot on the Blues top line with David Backes and T.J. Oshie. "He plays in all situations, hes a big leader, so its definitely tough." The Swede is in his ninth season. He signed a three-year $17.4 million contract extension this month. Forward Sergey Andronov was recalled under emergency conditions from Chicago (AHL). The 24-year-old Andronov was a third-round pick in the 2009 draft has 13 points on seven goals and six assists in 28 games. Steen missed 39 games with a concussion in 2011-12 from a hit against the Phoenix Coyotes on Dec. 23, 2011. "I think wed be just as careful if it was his first one," Armstrong said. "Any time you deal with a head injury, you want to be cautious and thats what we want to do with Alexander." The Blues anticipated forward Vladimir Sobotka would return Saturday from an upper-body injury. Nike Free Run+ 3 mulheres. Pujols homered in his first game in Baltimore, C.J. NEW YORK -- Michael Martinez waited a long time for his moment in the big leagues. He never expected it would come on a home run. The 28-year-old rookie hit a three-run shot for his first major league homer to back a steady outing by Kyle Kendrick and help lead the Philadelphia Phillies to their seventh straight series win with an 8-5 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. "It was worth the wait," Martinez said through a translator. Martinez, a Rule 5 pick from Washington, added a sacrifice fly in the seventh for a career-high four RBIs. He came in hitting .213 in 89 at-bats, getting most of his playing time because of his defensive abilities. "Hes got good hands and a good arm," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "Hes got a real chance to be a good utility player." Kendrick singled twice and scored on Martinezs drive in the fifth inning off Mike Pelfrey (5-9). Ryan Howard hit a run-scoring single in the first and Philadelphia took two of three from the NL East rival Mets for the fourth time this season. Jimmy Rollins had a two-run single in a three-run eighth aided by Trail, B.C., native Jason Bays error in left field and reliever Pedro Beatos three walks. Those eighth-inning runs provided a needed cushion when the Mets took advantage of four walks and a hit batter to score three in the bottom half -- Kendrick left after the seventh. "Fortunately we had enough (runs) to keep us good," Howard said. Kendrick (5-4) continued his dominance of division opponents, improving to 4-1 in 11 games -- four starts -- this season. A day after the makeshift Mets roughed up Cole Hamels in an 11-2 rout, Kendrick pitched like one of his more accomplished staffmates. Until the seventh, when pinch-hitter Scott Hairston hit an RBI single, Kendrick shut down New York anytime he found himself in trouble. He gave up a leadoff double to Lucas Duda in the second but then induced three straight groundball outs. A leadoff walk in the third was quickly wiped out by a double play. He then retired nine of 10 before Ronny Paulino doubled to open the seventh. Kendrick gave up six hits in seven innings, walking three. "You get in jams, you just have to get yourself out," Kendrick said. Mets all-star right-fielder Carlos Beltran was out with the flu for the second straight game and manager Terry Collins again tried to take advantage of a favourable matchup with his fill-in. Hairston subbed for Beltran Saturday because of his success against Hamels and drove in five runs. This time Willie Harris got the call based on his .316 average against Kendrick. Batting third, he hhad a single and a double but was stranded in scoring position each time by Bay, and walked and scored in the eighth.ddddddddddddThe Mets overall were 4 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Philadelphia again got the best of Pelfrey. The big right-hander began the season as the No. 1 starter in place of the injured Johan Santana but he has not been able to find any consistency. After two solid starts in July, he gave up four runs in five innings Sunday. Pelfrey fell to 0-2 with a 9.47 earned-run average against the Phillies this season. Chase Utley walked with two outs in the first, stole second and scored on Howards hit to right field. Kendrick and Rollins singled in the fifth ahead of Martinez. Playing for injured all-star third baseman Placido Polanco, the switch-hitting Martinez, batting lefty, hit a drive that just cleared the angled wall in right field for a 4-0 lead. "Im not a power hitter so Im surprised it left the yard," said Martinez, who hit 20 homers in 1,961 minor league at-bats. Martinez had a sacrifice fly in the seventh for a 5-0 lead. Booed all day, Bay came in on Howards sinking liner and the ball hit off the top of his glove for an error to start the eighth. "I missed it," Bay said. "Its one of those things where I missed it." Beato then walked three around two foul outs with pinch-hitter Ross Gload taking a free pass to push in a run. Rollins followed with his third hit scoring two needed runs. "I thought the guys fought hard today," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "We just didnt pitch today. That was the difference." Juan Perez relieved Kendrick and walked the only three batters he faced. Ryan Madson entered and got Duda to hit into a double play that scored a run. Paulino followed with an RBI single. Madson hit Ruben Tejada with a pitch, walked Nick Evans and gave up a run-scoring single to Angel Pagan before giving way to Antonio Bastardo, who struck out Justin Turner with the bases loaded. While Bastardo warmed up, the Mets showed a highlight of the U.S. womens team scoring a goal against Japan in the World Cup final on the video board. Bastardo gave up an RBI triple to Duda in the ninth but finished for his sixth save. NOTES: The Mets left 11 on base. ... Phillies CF Shane Victorino, out since July 8 with a sprained right thumb ligament, went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI Saturday for double-A Reading, his first rehab game. Hes eligible to come off the DL Tuesday. ... RHP Brad Lidge (right shoulder) threw a scoreless inning with two strikeouts for Reading, pitching for the second straight day. ' ' '

Headlining the group is 2013 Columbus Blue Jackets first-round draft pick Marko Dano. He is joined by three others drafted by NHL clubs, including Montreal Canadiens prospect Martin Reway. The three draftees eclipses by one the amount named to the selection camp by the rival Czech Republic. In 2007, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were in their second season under skipper Joe Maddon. They actually finished with a better record in ‘07 than they did in ‘06 but only marginally, going from 61 victories to 66. They had a slugging first baseman in Carlos Pena who ripped 46 homers and drove in 121 runs while batting .282. They also had an up-and-coming outfielder in B.J Upton who hit 300 while ripping 24 homers and driving in 82 runs. The Devil Rays had two pitchers who managed to get into double digits in victories in James Shields who went 12-8 with a 3.85 ERA and left Scott Kazmir who racked up a 13-9 mark with a 3.48 earned run average. They also had a closer in Alberto Reyes who saved 26 games. Otherwise, it was pretty grim. They scored 782 runs but surrendered 944. The team ERA was a horrendous 5.53. Their attendance of 1,387,603 was the worst in the American League. Back-to-back years like ‘06 and ‘07 could have been enough to cost some managers their jobs, but the Rays had a plan and they also had some blue chip prospects on the way. In 2006, they drafted a highly regarded third baseman in Evan Longoria third overall,. In 2007 they grabbed hard throwing lefty David Price number one. Those were their best two picks since B.J Upton in 2002. In 2008 Tampa Bay got rid of the Devil and became simply known as the Tampa Bay Rays. The turnaround season was remarkable. They went from 66 victories to 97. They shaved their team ERA from 5.53 to 3.82. The Rays actually scored eight fewer runs in ‘08 than they did in ‘07, but they cut their runs against by 273 to 671. All five of their starters, James Shields, Edwin Jackson, Andy Sonnanstine, Matt Garza and Scott Kazmir -- all betweenn 24 and 26 years of age -- won in double digits with Shields and Jackson leading the way with 14 apiece. Four of the five pitched at least 183 innings. Shields had a staff high 215 and four of the five starters made at least 30 starts. They also added veteran closer Troy Percival who saved 28 games. He also had a great support staff in J.P Howell. Dan Wheeler and Grant Balfour who chipped in with 17 victories. Though Penas numbers dropped off a bit to a ,247 average with 31 homers and 102 runs batted in, Longoria emerged as a force with 27 homers and 85 RBIs while batting .272. Former Blue Jays rookie of the year Eric Hinskie chipped in with 20 homers and 60 runs batted in off the bench. The key though was pitching depth. That 2008 staff had eight pitchers who established themselves as manager league starters including&nbbsp; Shields, Garza, Jason Hammel, Jackson, Kazmir, Sonnanstine, Jeff Niemann and Price who pitched in relief late that season.dddddddddddd The 2008 Rays went all the way to the World Series where they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in five. Over the last six seasons they have racked up a record of (550-423) and been to the post-season four times. The only thing that hasnt improved greatly is their attendance. The incredible season of 2008 boosted the turnstyle count by nearly half a million from the year before to 1,811,986. But by last season the numbers had diminished again to 1,510,300 -- the worst in the American League. The Rays has still never come close to matching the attendance figures of their inaugural season of 1998, when they drew 2,506,293. Its sad really, but at least it is living proof that a well managed, small market club can compete and in fact thrive in the American League East. The Blue Jays have the star power in Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, some possible blue chippers in Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus, a decent bullpen and a couple of solid veteran pitchers in R,A Dickey and Mark Buehrle. They just havent been able to stay healthy enough or keep grinding out pitching prospects the way the Rays have. Its still too early to predict how the A.L East is going to unfold in 2014, but in some circles, the Rays are already being called to win the division with the Blue Jays to finish last behind Baltimore. The Blue Jays are still waiting for some kind of solid return on the Roy Halladay trade. Back on December 16th of 2009, they shipped "Doc" to the Phillies for Kyle Drabek, Travis DArnaud and outfielder Michael Taylor. They wound up flipping Taylor to Oakland for Brett Wallace and then sent Wallace to Houston for Anthony Gose. The Astros designated Wallace for assignment this week when they signed veteran right hander Jerome Williams. Wallace never really developed as a hitter and didnt play well enough defensively at first or third. The Jays are still waiting for Drabek and Gose to arrive as major leaguers and DArnaud was used as part of the package to get R.A Dickey from the Mets. I bring all this up because Halladays illustrious career is now over. The Phillies are going to honour him on their alumni weekend this summer during a series against the Mets. On Aug. 8 the Phils will hold a special ceremony for Roy and will give the fans a special Halladay bobblehead. That same weekend on Aug. 9, the Phillies will induct Charlie Manuel to their wall of fame. ' ' '

The traditional pre-Masters event was halted early due to inclement weather. Harrington, who tied for first in 2003 and won in 2004, became the first three-time champion of the event. He and Byrd topped Adam Scott by one shot, but now face a nasty bit of Masters history: No player has ever won the Par 3 and the Masters in the same year. Harrington has made eight Masters cuts in 12 appearances with three top-10s, but has failed to break 72 in his last seven rounds at Augusta. Byrd, who birdied the final hole to tie Harrington on Wednesday, has played in four Masters with little success. Since tying for eighth in 2003, he has missed the cut in his last three appearances and has never shot lower than 71 in 10 rounds. Scott, who tied for second at last years Masters following back-to-back 67s over the weekend, has posted five top-25 finishes at the championship in his 10 previoous appearances.dddddddddddd Three-time Masters champion Phil Mickelson tied for sixth place at the Par 3, finishing two shots back. The field included tournament participants, non-competing past champions and honorary invitees. Some players have their caddies -- often a child, spouse or other family member -- putt out on some greens, officially posting a no-score. Just 18 players posted an official final score ahead of the weather on Wednesday. Among those who didnt finish was Jerry Pate, who was four-under through five holes when play was stopped. There were two holes-in-one made, pushing the all-time total to 75. Mark Wilson aced the fourth, while Thomas Bjorn holed out on the ninth. The featured group again this year included six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus, four-time winner Arnold Palmer and three-time victor Gary Player, who birdied the first hole. The trio only played two holes before the event was stopped. Nicklaus, Palmer and Player will strike the ceremonial first tee shots around 7:40 a.m. (et) on Thursday. ' ' '

WARSAW, Poland - Russia could be deducted six points in its qualifying group for the next European Championship if its fans turn violent again at Euro 2012. UEFA fined the Russian football association C120,000 ($150,000) on Wednesday because its fans attacked stadium stewards at a match last week in Poland. UEFA also gave the federation a suspended six-point deduction for a repeat offence. "This decision is suspended for a probationary period running from now until the end of the playoffs of the next UEFA European Football Championship," UEFA said in a statement. Russia can appeal the verdict within three days. Within hours of the announcement, UEFA charged Russia with further offences relating to its fans behaviour inside the National Stadium during the match against Poland on Tuesday in Warsaw. "However, last nights incidents do not have any impact on the probation period for the sanction imposed on (Russia) following the incidents at their first match against the Czech Republic in Wroclaw," UEFA said. Russian fans were filmed fighting with stadium staff in Wroclaw after a 4-1 win last Friday. Police said violence flared when stewards tried to detain a man they believed threw a firecracker. Four stewards were treated at a hospital but were not seriously injured. Russias fine was also imposed by UEFAs disciplinary panel because of the thrown firework and for fans displaying "illicit banners." An anti-discrimination monitoring group reported seeing nationalist flags adopted by far-right activists. UEFA is still investigating claims that Russian fans racially abused Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie, who is black. UEFA rules hold football associations responsible for their fans behaviour inside stadiums. Some Russian fans were involved in violent clashes, largely provoked by Poles, in Warsaw on Tuesday before and during the match against the co-hosts. UEFA cannot sanction federations for incidents that occur away from stadiums. Russia is likely to find out its Euro 2016 qualifying group -- of five or six teams -- in less than two years. Euro 2016 in France has been expanded to 24 nations, meaning the two top teams in each group will automatically advance. Third-place teams should get a final chance to advance through the playoffs. Russias fine could be deducted from the Euro 2012 prize money and results bonuses UEFA pays to the 16 competing nations in Poland and Ukraine. The country has earned C9.5 million ($11.9 million) so far, and would collect more than C20 million ($25.2 million) if it wins the tournament. UEFA said its disciplinary panel will on Sunday review a second round of charges against Russia following the 1-1 draw with Poland. A firecracker was thrown on the field after Russia scored, and at least six black, yellow and white "Russian Empire" flags were displayed at one end of the stadium occupied by Russian fans. A fan also ran the length of the field after the final whistle, holding a Russian national flag with both arms aloft, before being caught by stewards. UEFA has charged Polands football association after its fans also lit fireworks, which are banned from Euro 2012 stadiums. Cheap Jerseys. PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia 76ers have completed a buyout of the contract of veteran forward Danny Granger, enabling the veteran forward to sign with any team assuming he clears waivers by 5 p.m. on Friday. Granger was acquired from the Indiana Pacers last Thursday for Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen, but never played a minute for Philadelphia. The 76ers also received a 2015 second-round draft pick in the deal. "Given Dannys future goals and his desire to pursue them, we worked to fulfil his requests and have come to a resolution that we feel is mutually beneficial to both Danny and our organization," Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie said in a statement Wednesday night. Cheringtons promotion from assistant general manager will be announced at an afternoon news conference, the team said Monday. It had been expected for several weeks while the Chicago Cubs were working out details for Epstein to join them. On Friday, both teams announced that Epstein had resigned from the Red Sox to become president of baseball operations for the Cubs. The teams said then they would delay any news conference until Tuesday, a day off after Game 5 of the World Series. Left unsettled is the compensation the Cubs will hand over for the Red Sox allowing Epstein to leave while still under contract for one more year. Cherington is likely to be involved in those discussions, perhaps with Jed Hoyer, who is expected to leave as general manager of the San Diego Padres for a similar job with the Cubs. Cherington has been handling many of the duties of general manager because Epsteins departure had been expected. Cherington and Hoyer were co-general managers of the Red Sox for about six weeks after Epstein resigned after the 2005 season when an internal squabble convinced him he couldnt put his whole heart into the job. When Epstein returned, team president Larry Lucchino alluded to the smoothing out of friction that had developed between the baseball and business sides of the organization. A major immediate focus for Cherington will be the search for a new manager. Terry Francona left on Sept. 30 after eight seasons and two World Series championships.dddddddddddd Two days earlier, the Red Sox were eliminated from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season. They went 7-20 in September after starting the month in first place in the AL East and with a nine-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays for a wild-card berth. After the collapse was complete, the Boston Globe reported that starting pitchers Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and John Lackey ate fried chicken and drank beer in the clubhouse during games in which they were not scheduled to pitch. They denied a separate television report that they also drank beer in the dugout. They were part of a rotation that went 4-13 with a 7.08 ERA in September. Cherington joined the Red Sox in 1999 under former general manager Dan Duquette, who was fired during spring training in 2002 shortly after John Henry, Tom Werner and Lucchino were approved as the teams new owners by major league baseball. Cherington started with the Red Sox as a mid-Atlantic scout and joined the baseball operations department in May 1999. He spent two years as Bostons international scouting co-ordinator then became assistant director of player development in 2002. In December 2002, Cherington was named the Red Sox director of player development, a post he held until becoming co-general manager in December 2005. When Epstein returned as general manager, Cherington was named vice-president of player personnel before his promotion in January 2009 to senior vice-president and assistant general manager. ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. Hello Mr. Fraser, With all the changes being made to increase scoring and offensive play in the NHL, why do the linesmen continue to stand on the outside of the blue line? This appears to create too many unnecessary stoppages in play due to offsides during offensive zone entry, where the puck is sent into the linesmens skates/legs and he has not enough time to react to allow the entry to proceed according to plan. I just checked online and what I found says they should be inside the blue line, but they seem to always be just outside (or at least I notice more when that happens, rather that when the chip in hits them and their arm doesnt go up because they are inside the line). Is it because in some rinks the glass starts at the blue line and they have to prop themselves up onto the ledge of the players bench to avoid being hit by the puck? Maybe these incidents tend to occur mostly in those rinks and not the ones where the bench extends further into the zone past the blue line. Thanks for reading!Rich Mandez Hi Rich: There are a few potential obstacles in the current NHL that the linesmen have to be aware of and overcome as they set up to make the correct call at the attacking blue line. - The removal of the center red line for the purpose of a two-line offside pass stretches the attacking zone all the way to the far blue line. - The enhanced standard by the referees to eliminate restraining fouls has created considerable speed through the neutral zone as teams transition more quickly on the attack. - Players are much bigger on average than any other era of the game, creating additional congestion on the ice. (Have you noticed the towering size of many of the current crop of linesmen as well?) - The "four-man officiating system" has added another body on the ice; one of which always leads the play by skating backwards into the attacking zone. Often his entry into the zone can be on the same side of the ice that the linesman making the off-side call at the blue line is positioned. - They are required to support their fellow linesman close to the foreword blue line in the event that he is bumped off the line and then must reverse direction quickly as the play transitions in the other direction toward the blue line that is his primary responsibility. Fast breaks can make this quite challenging. The bottom line Rich is that the linesman must do whatever is necessary to assume the very best position in order to see the puck cross the inside edge of their respective blue line ahead of any attacking player. This requires skating skill, speed, agility and athleticism which the NHL linesmen demonstrate on a consistent basis during every game! The "best position" is often obtained by sliding into the zone just ahead of the play and to gain an "unobstructed view" of the inside edge of the blue line. This inside position also allows the puck to cross the line cleanly without restriction by accidentally striking a linesman in the neutral zone as you suggest Rich. Once the puck enters the zone legally, the linesman is then required to immediately reposition himself outside the blue line in the neutral zone to prevent his body and skates from interfering with the pucks exit from the zone. In theory this sounds like a pretty simple process doesnt it Rich. In practice however, given the bullet point obstacles I mentioned and others I didnt, its not at all easy to accomplish. I am amazed at the close plays on the blue line that are almost always ruled correctly by the linesmen. These are the times we never even notice them. Often the only time we do notice the linesmen is on the rare occasion when the puck does hit them on dump or chip when they havent yet assumed that best position inside the zone through some unavoidable circumstance. When players gain the red line and pound the puck in their direction the linesmen are most vulnerable to being struck and even injured. They should avoid sitting up on the boards because from this position they are most vulnerable to being hit without any means of escape other than by being knocked into the players bench! I can assure you the linesmen do their very best to stay out of the way of the puck and flow of play but at times it just isnt possible. Perhaps your question here Rich will inspire the linesmen to work a little harder at gaining the most desired location inside the line whenever possible. The most creative linesman I ever worked with and certainly one of the very best of all-time is Hockey Hall of Fame linesman Ray Scapinello (inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008). Ray was no giant at 57" tall but was lightning fast on his skates and earned the respect of every player and coach in the League. When Scotty Morrison hired 611" linesman Mike Cvik he paired him with the diminutive Scapinello in his first assignment in Toronto. Aside from the opportunity to learn from one of the best in Scapinello, Scotty demonstrated his sense of humor by putting Mutt and Jeff together in that game. When I was added to that tandem as the referee Scamp and I told big Honda not to stand near us for the National Anthem! Ray Scapinello read the play just as quickly as he skated and demonstrated a unique flair in making his calls on the blue line. Im sure he might have missed a call or two over his career because no one is perfect but I must confess I cant ever remember seeing him miss one in the many, many big games we worked together! Scamp would not only get inside the zone ahead of the play but on the close ones he would be down on one knee with his eyes set like a laser on the inside edge of the blue line. He did whatever was necessary to make the call. One time as players approached him with speed down the wall, rather than bump into the attacking zone I witnessed Ray jump into the players bench at the blue line to make the call;. The players seated on the bench had a stunned look on their face as Scampy made a washout signal from their side of the boards and then jumped back onto the ice once the attacking players passed by. Scampy always found a way to make the call from the best and most desired position. I am sure his advice to the current group of linesmen is to read and react to the play quickly and then move your feet to get in the best and most desired position to make the call. Ray Scapinello is without a doubt one of the very best linesman in the history of the NHL. Cheap jerseys from china. SAN FRANCISCO -- Heath Bell walked into the visitors clubhouse at AT&T Park on Wednesday, and many of his young San Diego Padres teammates figured he was already long gone after the San Francisco Giants claimed him off waivers. Leave it to the burly all-star closer to play the part of prankster and have a little fun with some of the younger players who didnt quite understand the waiver-wire process. "The big joke in the clubhouse is, Youre still here?" Bell said, chuckling. "I said I couldnt find the Giants clubhouse." While his name circulated on flat-screen televisions in both clubhouses, Bell and seemingly everybody else in the ballpark remained skeptical about whether he will actually end up with the defending World Series champions. San Diego has 48 hours from the time Bell was claimed to decide whether to work out a trade for the three-time all-star, allow him to be claimed or pull him back from waivers. The Giants already have one of baseballs best bullpens -- albeit banged up at the moment -- and it would seem unlikely that general manager Brian Sabean would give up anything of value in a trade. The move could be just to block NL West-leading Arizona -- under first-year general manager and former Padres GM Kevin Towers -- or other contenders from landing Bell. San Francisco began the day two games back of the Diamondbacks. Asked if Bell would still be with the club after the deadline, Padres manager Bud Black said he would be "extremely shocked" if his closer wasnt. "Albert Pujols was put on waivers. Justin Verlander was put on waivers. Im sure they got claimed, too, right?" Black said. "I dont know, but every general manager Ive known tells me that every player has put been put on waivers." Bell, too, was already was making plans for the teams series at Arizona beginning Friday. "I feel like Im going to Arizona with the Padres and going to do fantasy football on our off day and hang out by the pool and go see a couple movies and go sweat my butt off when I go run in Arizona for Fridays game," he said. The home team is certainly familiar with the right-hander. Bell converted his 35th save in 39 opportunities in Tuesdays 7-5 win at San Francisco. He also was chosen by Giants manager Bruce Bochy for the all-star game, famously sliding onto the infield grass before the NL manager handed him the ball in relief. The 33-year-old Bell learned that the Giants won the claim on him when a radio station called him for an interview. After a summer filled with trade talk, Bell was hardly surprised. "I feel pretty honoured. Theyre the world champs, they want me to be part of their organization," he said. "But nothing has happened right now. Im a Padre, and Im pretty happy about that." San Franciscos stellar bullpen is certainly fractured. There is no timetable for when Brian Wilson will get on a mound and test his inflamed right elbow, although theres a chance he could return in early September for the stretch run. Wilson has declined to discuss his injury. He led the majors with 48 saves last season, while Bell had 47. The Giants are more confident that setup man Sergio Romo, also on the disabled list with an elbow injury, will be back soon. Bochy said he hadnt talked to Sabean yet and wouldnt speculate about the teams plans. "That happens around baseball, so it just happened to make news," Bochy said. "Thats what it is right now. When that happens, a club claims somebody, some times those two clubs talk and make a deal. Im not talking about this as much as what happens with other deals." Bell has been clear all season that he enjoys playing for San Diego and doesnt want to go anywhere. While he will likely decline arbitration to become a free agent after the season, the Padres wouldnt lose Bell for nothing. They would likely get compensatory draft picks if he walks. Bell also has kept open the possibility he would re-sign with San Diego, even if he landed in San Francisco -- or somewhere else -- by the end of the week. In the meantime, he couldnt help but poke fun at how odd it would be to switch clubhouses in the middle of a quick two-game series. "It would be easy. It wouldnt be that far," he said, smiling. "I know where the locker room is. It would be a little weird just because weve had so many battles over the years." JC: I think Chael Sonnen proved a very good point - we need weight classes. The size difference between him and Jon Jones was very, well, apparent. From a talent stand point, Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva would make a fantastic fight. The size difference, and body types would make for an advantage to Silva that would put GSP at a huge deficit. Would this be a super fight? The fight would favor Silva far too much. St-Pierre is 510, 190-195 pounds when he doesnt cut weight and Anderson is 62 at a natural 205 pounds. Silva has all the natural ability still in his corner. That means Silva has an advantage, and the fight is never going to be fair or show whos the best. I dont want to see a super fight. All I want to see is someone come up and dethrone Silva, and St-Pierre. Imagine how talented that fighter would be? Its fun to speculate who would win though and it makes for some great arguments. Lynch: My definition of a super fight is basically when a high level fighter decides to fight outside his weight class (ie: the best from one division fights someone in another division). There have been arguments it must be a champion vs. champion match to be a “true” super fight, but I dont think that necessarily has to be the case. The first super fight that comes to mind was when former lightweight champion B.J. Penn moved up a weight class to fight St-Pierre at UFC 94. The Hawaiian was dominated and a huge reason GSP won was because of his size advantage. Penn is a true lightweight and an undersized welterweight. In the St-Pierre vs. Silva example, because Silva cuts so much weight and clearly is the much larger fighter, that fight isnt exactly fair. However, when former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar decided to drop down to featherweight to battle 145-champ Jose Aldo, that was an evenly matched contest. Edgar is a smaller lightweight and actually the Brazilian appeared bigger than the New Jersey native when they fought. I think these super fights are definitely possible, it just depends on the physical nature of the opponent. This is why fights like Silva vs. Jon Jones or even St-Pierre vs. lightweight champ Ben Henderson would be intriguing because these are fighters are close in physical statute. Pollock: I think there are so many differing views on what is a “super fight”. To most it means any combination of Silva, Jones and St-Pierre and absolutely it is possible to make a fight involving two of those three. Those are the only fights I would classify as “dream” fights right now that have a realistic opportunity to be made. Im excited to see Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis, as I was to see Aldo vs. Edgar, but neither of these fights take on the stature and command the attention that a Jones vs. Silva fight in 2013 would. It is also setting a precedent that Im not crazy about wherein a fighter cleans out his division and therefore the next step is to move up a weight class and I find that logic flawed. Its a carryover from boxing where weight classes are a couple of pounds difference as opposed to St-Pierre cutting to make 170-pounds and then jumping up to fight a guy in Silva, who walks around at 215-pounds. As a business there are big fights to be made by mixing and matching weight classes but from a fighters perspective there is one big day pay and a lot of risk attached to it. 2) Should the rules for illegal knee strikes be changed? JC: Miesha Tate lost her title shot, and a shot to coach due to a illegal knee to the head. She reached for the ground, planted her hand and became an illegal target for knee strikes to the head. The strike was missed by Kim Winslow, and cost Tate the win. Should a hand to the ground be a form of defence? In my opinion, it definitely should not be. In regards to fighter safety, dropping your guard is never a good idea. Moving away from your opponent, and dropping your defence should not be a legitimate defence. The strike to Tate was illegal only by a simple technicality. I would like to see the strike rule revisited there has to be a better way to defend yourself than to put one hand on the ground. Lynch: Yes the rule should defiantly be revised but Im not in favor of knees to a grounded opponent (similar to what was allowed in Japan with PRIDE). I agree with Jordan, the hand planted rule as it stands is not a solid argument for a fighter defending him or herself. I dont necessarily think in the Tate case she was relying on the hand placement, so her opponent wouldnt be able to land shot, but in general it shouldnt be used as an advantage if a fighter is trying to get up. What I would like change is elboows to the ground as weve seen too many fights stopped because of cuts, but thats a whole other argument.dddddddddddd. Especially with the series of bizarre events that took place at UFC 159, its clear the sport is evolving and the knowledge of what works (and what doesnt) is more apparent than ever. I think it would be interesting to poll the fighters and get feedback on the rules. Create more of a unified system between commissions. Pollock: One of the areas that drives me nuts is the desire we constantly have to measure “intent” and its impossible to do whether it is determining if someone intentionally poked someone in the eye, delivered an illegal knee or administered a dirty hit in a hockey game. Ive always hated the strategic nature of a fighter placing a hand on the mat to avoid taking a knee and its no longer a safety precaution but a strategy device. Accidents are going to happen in fights but I would like more of a hard line stance. How many fights have we seen multiple fence grabs, low blows and even eye pokes and not a point deducted? Its become comical because with so many warnings and no point deductions then why am I so concerned about illegal acts in the cage if I will not be punished? To sum it up, I dont think its a fight the UFC is going to win with commissions and would take forever to grandfather that rule in but Im adamantly opposed to the current manipulation of the rule by many fighters with a hand or finger on the mat to avoid damage because in that instance I know what the intent is and doesnt happen by accident. 3) With the rumors of next seasons Ultimate Fighter being Team Canada vs. Team Australia, who would you like to see as the coaches? Lynch: This is a bit of a head scratcher for me because there arent many Australian fighters under contract with the UFC, nor are there many Canadian fighters with a personality that would translate well to television. Assuming Im the head of the production company producing the series, Im looking for two things, a knowledgeable coach and someone who has a sellable personality. If the teams were say USA or Brazil there are a litter of fighters to choose from that mold. Talented Canadians like Rory MacDonald, T.J Grant, and Sam Stout are options, but dont scream must see TV. With that said, Id have to pick Patrick Cote vs. Hector Lombard. Before I hear the backlash about my picks let me explain. Cote is not deserving of a coaching spot and has looked lackluster since his return to the UFC. The one thing the Quebec native does possess however is a personality, and we got to see that when he was a contestant on season four of the Ultimate Fighter. He also has an exciting, stand and bang type fighting style that is similar to Lombards. Now Im aware the ATT product Lombard fights at middleweight but there have been numerous reports he would welcome a drop to the welterweight division. Im also aware he was born in Cuba and grew up in New Zealand which technically doesnt fit the Team Australia coaching mold. But who are we kidding, this is the Ultimate Fighter! Who cares about the politically correct stuff? I think Cote is a perfect fight for the former Bellator middleweight champion in his first fight at 170 pounds and also I think both of these fighters have fiery personalities that would sell the series. Pollock: Was anyone else let down with this Team Canada vs. Team Australia gimmick? Talk about a rivalry that no one else is. First of all, which Australian fighters really jump out as candidates? George Sotiropoulos? Kyle Noke? James Te Huna (by way of New Zealand)?. I more than get my fix with the regular TUF and really do not need yet another international version of the series. In terms of Canadian fighters I would hope you would look at someone with a big upside and for my own enjoyment watching Rory MacDonald in that reality setting would probably be great and keeps him tied up while St-Pierre is still fighting at welterweight. Im interested to see who makes it onto the show but at this juncture Im just not that excited in this upcoming series. JC: As a strength coach to some very cool fighters I would like to see a twist if this Team Canada vs Team Australia comes to be. Lets focus on the behind the scenes guys. What if Firas Zahabi took on a coach from Australia, or better Zahabi MMA vs. Mark Dellagrotte. Not too many Australian coaches come to mind, but lets be honest here, unless its St-Pierre not to many UFC fighters will get attention in the land down under. TUF is a little over done, and this is going to water the product down further. If it was up to me, this would be a war of real coaches trying to find talent. If anyone is listening, change TUF up completely. Make it a real talent search and talent creation. The house thing isnt working for me anymore. I want to see what goes into making a real fighter, I want to get behind the scenes. Pancakes anyone? ' ' '

Sharapova dictated from the opening game, when she broke Wozniacki at love with groundstrokes that had the Dane running from side to side. Sharapova faced just two break points on her serve in the nearly 1 1/2-hour match. "I always felt like I was always a foot ahead, especially with the breaks," she said. "I was able to serve well today, and that helped me." It was Sharapovas second career title at Indian Wells, where she first won in 2006. Wozniacki won here in 2011. The women met in a final for the first time; their six other matches came in earlier rounds. "I dont think I have grey hairs yet, but as the years go by, Im still very lucky that Im here and that Im still doing it and that I still love it and have the passion to do it," Sharapova said. The Russian is projected to rise one spot in the WTA Tour rankings to No. 2 on Monday, dropping Victoria Azarenka to third. Wozniacki will move up one spot to No. 9. The victory, worth $1 million, gave Sharapova at least one title for 11 straight years dating to 2003. Sharapova led 2-1 when Wozniacki brought her coach-dad Piotr out during a break. But she couldnt get untracked, and was broken again in the seventh game. Sharapova fought off two break points to take the first set in 38 minutes. "She was putting pressure on me from the start. She was serving very well," Wozniacki said. "I felt llike everything that she wanted to do today was going in.dddddddddddd She was making very few errors, and if she did, then it was really at the times where it didnt really matter." Sharapova broke to open the second set when Wozniacki double-faulted the game away. She converted her fourth break point on Wozniackis backhand error to take a 5-3 lead. Sharapova was aggressive in her approach, using her forehand to push Wozniacki around and then coming in on short balls to easily put them away. "I thought I was being aggressive, but I was doing the right things and being patient enough and looking for the right shot when I wanted to move in a little bit," Sharapova said. "Shes someone that if she has time she can make you hit so many balls, and thats not really the way that I want to be and not the way I want to control the points. It was really important to try to take away that time that she likes to have." Sharapova went for it on her serves, too, winning 19 of 22 points on her first serve. Even when she sometimes missed going down the T, she kept changing up her placement. Wozniacki struggled with Sharapovas serve, winning just 3 of 22 points on the Russians first serve. "I found it a little bit difficult because her first, second serve were pretty much the same speed. It was hard, and she stepped into the returns," Wozniacki said. "Even when I felt like she was out there running, she still came down with some shots that were going very close to the lines. She forced me to do a few errors that I usually wouldnt do." ' ' '

Balotelli finding his form It took a little while, but Italian striker Mario Balotelli is finding his form at the perfect time. Balotelli scored both goals to lead Italy past Germany in the semifinals by a score of 2-1. Balotelli struggled to trouble Iker Casillas in Spains goal during Italys first taste of tournament action at EURO 2012, and the Italian will be desperate to put that right in the final. The volatile front man has the perfect blend of strength, speed and finishing ability – something that head coach Cesare Prandelli will be looking to utilize to great effect in the final. If Italy can find Balotelli on the counter-attack, like they did for his second goal against Germany, he will cause Spains defence all kinds of problems. 2. Is Pirlo peerless at EURO 2012? Ive got Andrea Pirlo on top of my list for the EURO 2012 all-star team; such have been the levels of his performances for Italy. After a brilliant club season, where Pirlo helped Juventus to the Serie A title, the midfield maestro has pulled the strings for his national team in this tournament. The best word I can use to describe Pirlo is efficient – everything he does is for a reason, and every pass he makes has a purpose. He rarely concedes possession, and is equally proficient on either foot. Spain will need to do a better job of dealing with Pirlo in the final than they did in their group game, where the Italian played a magnificent ball in behind the Spanish defence to spring Antonio Di Natale to open the scoring. 3. Prandelli proving his worth I have given plenty of praise to Italian head coach Cesare Prandelli over the course of the tournament. He has shown himself to be tactically astute, switching formations and personnel to suit each opponent. In Italys group stage meeting with Spain, Prandelli deployed a 3-5-2 formation, with midfielder Danielle De Rossi operating as a libero between two central defenders. Prandelli could opt for the same formation in the final, but may decide to stick with the midfield diamond that worked so well against Germany. Pirlo served as the base of the diamond, with De Rossi to the left, Claudio Marchisio to the right and Riccarddo Montolivo as the point.dddddddddddd While Pirlos positional role was clear, the other three were interchangeable, causing all sorts of confusion in the German midfield. I would be surprised if Prandelli reverted to the same formation and personnel as he utilized in their first game, and think he might have one final tactical card up his sleeve to play against Spain in the final. 4. Tiki-taka is... boring? Im shocked at the criticism leveled at Spain for being, of all things, boring. Keeping possession of the ball is both an offensive and defensive strategy, and no team in the world does this better than Spain. The theory is really quite simple; the opponent cannot score if they do not have the ball. As enjoyable as it is to watch Spain toying with their opponents like a cat toying with a mouse, my concern for them is this; when both fullbacks, Jordi Alba and Alvaro Arbeloa, step up into midfield – at times in the tournament they have operated almost as wingers – they leave themselves exposed to the counter attack. If any team in this tournament is capable of hurting Spain on the counter-attack, it is Italy. If Pirlo and company can steal the ball off Spains midfield and get it forward quickly to Balotelli and Cassano, Spain will have problems. But getting the ball off of Spains midfielders is not an easy task! 5. False nine or Fernando Torres? The big decision that Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque needs to make ahead of the final is whether to opt for a false nine, in Cesc Fabregas, or a traditional centre forward – likely to be Fernando Torres. Alvaro Negredo did very little in his cameo appearance up front for Spain in their semifinal victory over Portugal, and I dont expect him to start in the final. Fernando Llorente has yet to see the field for Spain, so the logical choice for Del Bosque, if he opts for a centre forward, is Torres. When he came on in the group stage game against Italy, Torres caused problems because he was able to stretch the Italian back three. Im not convinced that he will have the same impact if he starts in the final, and I wouldnt be surprised if Del Bosque opts to go with Fabregas at the start, knowing he can bring Torres on when Italian defenders tire. Both managers have decisions to make, but one thing is for sure – this is going to be a great final for football fans to enjoy! ' ' '
