The Vikings offense is shaping its identity with every practice as the team learns who belongs and who doesn observing practices throughout training camp and speaking with offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave, there is much to glean from the direction of the offense. Remember, these observations are based on what I seen, not how the final installation will look in September.
Expect tight ends, tight ends and more tight ends. Despite 11 wide receivers on the 90man camp roster, the quarterbacks have spent much of camp throwing to Visanthe Shiancoe, Kyle Rudolph, Jeff Dugan and Jim Kleinsasser up the middle. Musgrave said his tight ends will have plenty of fullback responsibility, which increases the value of Kleinsasser and Dugan on this team. All four will get plenty of snaps in the next month of preseason work.
Blocking help will come from the edge. Left tackle Charlie Johnson has been scrambling since Thursday after signing with the Vikings late in the free agency process and fending off Jared Allen every day. But the 6foot4, 305pounder won be on an island every down. Expect chipblock help from fullbacks, running backs and tight ends.
Musgrave values pass protection over run protection because it provides more balance and, in turn, sets up the run. want to keep the quarterback upright and have him be able to be accurate, Musgrave said. people start getting around him, everything deteriorates. everything goes smoothly, Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart will get plenty of passcatching opportunities during the season. Sounds like the Vikings want to stay true to the plan of keeping AP fresh by resting him when possible. Expect Gerhart role to increase in pass protection.
After mostly running undercenter offense early in camp, the Vikings quarterbacks have taken more shotgun snaps in recent days.
Vikings need more communication in the passing game. Lots of blown routes and errant throws Tuesday. Must be cleaned up in last two days of camp.
Rarely do the Vikings ask their quarterbacks to go deep unless it a go route down the sideline, usually with either Michael Jenkins or Bernard Berrian. Most of the action is within a 30yard passing radius, at least so far.
