2 cases of measles reported at Boston area hospitals
BOSTON The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced Tuesday that two cases of measles have been diagnosed in recent weeks at two Boston area hospitals, and the agency issued a statewide advisory to those who have never been vaccinated.
One case each was diagnosed in the last two weeks of August at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and Metro West Medical Center in Framingham.
People who are not immune to the disease who may have been at either hospital may be at risk for developing measles or measlesrelated symptoms, according to officials.
The dates in question for Mass. General are Aug. 17 and 19 at the WalkIn Clinic, Aug. 20 at the Emergency Department, and Aug. 2123 at Inpatient Services.
The dates for Metro West Medical Center are Aug. 2324 at Inpatient Services.
Only people who have never received a measles vaccination and who visited either hospital on those days should be concerned, officials said.
Early symptoms of measles occur 10 days to 2 weeks after exposure and may resemble a cold with a fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes. A rash will break out on the skin two to four days after the initial symptoms develop, usually appearing first on the head and moving downward. The rash typically lasts a few days and then disappears in the same order.
People with measles may be contagious up to four days before the rash appears and for four days after the day the rash appears.
