The Canadiens have three days remaining to get ready for the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday at the Bell Centre. Michel Therrien will use the next few days to work on systems, execution and team building. Ideally, Therrien would have liked to have done an overnight team building exercise, but because of the clubs schedule they do not have the time. Instead the Canadiens have invited specialists in team bonding activities to come to Brossard. The Habs received some good news, as tough guy George Parros has officially been cleared by the team doctor to play. He was practicing on a line with Travis Moen and Brandon Prust. Prust, after practice, suggested their line should be nicknamed the "soft hands line." On the blueline it is still unknown if Douglas Murray, who signed with the Habs this off-season, will be ready to play on Tuesday. Therrien would not say which players he will dress on opening night. Only it didnt. Despite losing Karlsson, their no.1 defenceman, Jason Spezza, their no. 1 centre and Craig Anderson, their no. 1 goalie, Ottawa scraped and scratched toward a remarkable season in 2012-13, finishing as an unlikely seventh seed in the Eastern Conference before upsetting the Montreal Canadiens in the first round. And so now despite losing captain Henrik Zetterberg for the remainder of the Olympics with first-rate centre Henrik Sedin and rugged winger Johan Franzen already on the shelf, Sweden is prepared to defiantly march on. Backed by a 26-save shutout from Henrik Lundqvist and a late third period goal from Daniel Alfredsson, they did just that on Friday, edging the Swiss at Bolshoy Ice Dome in a hotly-contested preliminary round battle. "It doesnt really change anything in our mindset," said Karlsson of the Zetterberg absence, following the 1-0 victory against a feisty Switzerland squad. "Weve just got to foocus on what we have and we have a pretty good group of guys without those guys as well so we should be able to play some good hockey, even though we miss them a lot.dddddddddddd" "Every team goes through injuries," added Alex Steen brashly, starting the tournament alongside Zetterberg and Gabriel Landeskog. "Its the same in the NHL as it is in the Elite League as it is in the Olympics, part of the job. Its [the media who] make it a bigger deal." Even without Zetterberg, Sedin and Franzen, the Swedes still boast a fair share of slick skill and talent with Patrik Berglund now alongside Steen and Landeskog and Nicklas Backstrom firing between Daniel Sedin and Loui Eriksson. And with continued excellence from Lundqvist between the pipes and an easy-moving, oft-explosive defence fronted by Karlsson and Oliver Ekman-Larsson, their shot at reclaiming gold for the first time since 2006 remains intact – if not slightly more difficult. "I could just feel my energy went down when I heard the news," said Lundqvist of Zetterberg, who is suffering from a herniated disc. "But at the same time, you have to regroup." ' ' '

With Saturdays win the Winnipeg Jets finish their season high six-game road trip at 4-2. They are back to a game above .500 on the year and back to .500 on the road. It was their 10th extra time game of the year, and only the second one that did not got to a shootout. Mark Scheifele, with his first career overtime goal, was the hero for the Jets. It was also his third goal of the season. Scheifele scored the first goal of the trip (November 25th in New Jersey), and the last goal of the trip. The loss against Florida Thursday did not sit well with the Jets and it showed on the ice as they outshot Tampa 15-5 in the first, the only goal coming on a deflection by Blake Wheeler, his seventh goal of the season. It was Wheelers 100th career goal. It was the fourth time in the six games the Jets opened the scoring in the game. It was a shot by Jacob Trouba that Wheeler defected, with Grant Clitsome also picking up an assist. The play started with a faceoff win by Bryan Little. The first period faceoff stats very much favoured the Jets. The second period saw the Lightning start to gain momentum, especially in the second half of the period. The Jets were guilty of some turnovers, and add the long change in the middle period, it resulted in some long shifts and more time in their own end. The shots still favoured the Jets 14-12, and both Anders Lindback and Al Montoya played very well. It was Tampas 12th shot of the period that tied the game. An icing call resulted in a faceoff with 2.6 seconds on the clock. Martin St. Louis got the puck to the front of the net before the puck even settled on the ice, and Nate Thompson one-timed it home to tie the game with .2 seconds on the clock. Lindback made a terrific save off Devin Setoguchi when it was still 1-0, keeping his team just down a goal. Tampa outshot the Jets 12-6 in a scoreless third period with Montoya robbing Nikita Kucherov in the back half of the period to keep it tied at one. With 10 of the Jets 14 road games being decided by one goal, not a surprise the game went to overtime. The first good chance came from Alex Killorn as he had a partial breakaway only to hit the inside of the post. Scheifele lost his footing as he got the puck to the centre ice area, but managed to get it to Wheeler. Wheeler carried it into the Lightning zone, while Scheifele made his way to the front of the net, stick on the ice and eye on the puck as Wheeler put it to the back post where Scheifele was able to redirect it into the net to end the game at 1:04 of overtime and end the road trip with a win. Setoguchi lead the Jets with six shots on goal tying his season high, Dustin Byfuglien had five. Little won 15 of 24 faceoffs, Olli Jokinen 11 of 20, Scheifele 7 of 12. Byfuglien again played more than 26 minutes to lead in ice time, Trouba second at more than 24, his highest total since returning from injury at the start of the trip. Trouba took a shot off the hand late in the game, left in some discomfort, but was okay. The power play went 0/16 on the trip, the penalty kill was successful on 14 of 15. The Jets are now 8-3-1 against Eastern Conference teams this season. The only game on the trip the Jets gave up more than two goals was the loss against the Panthers. Jets were again minus Evander Kane, still listed as day to day with a lower body injury. In his absence Chris Thorburn set season highs for ice time and also had success in the faceoff department. It was a good trip for him, including a two assist game against the Rangers. “We really had a good first period,” said coach Claude Noel post-game. “They had a good second and the late goal could have unnerved us but we came back and played good in the third. We had a solid game. 3-3 would not have felt very good, 4-2 on the trip is a lot more comforting.” With the Jets dominating the opening period it made for a tough game for Montoya with not a lot of shots. “He was really strong and a tough game,” continued Noel. “The late goal in the second would have been tough on everyone if we had lost. We caught a break in overtime with the goal post.” The Jets now return home for three division games against St. Louis Tuesday, Colorado Thursday (both TSN Jets, TSN 1290), and Dallas Saturday afternoon (TSN 1290). Then its back on the road for two, with back-to-back games in Columbus and Buffalo.Wheeler finished the trip 2-3-5 in the last five games with two points in the final game, giving him 2-10-12 in his last 14 games overall. Trouba had three assists in his last three games, plus the Ranger game where he had eight blocked shots. Scheifele 2-2-4 on the trip and 2-3-5 in his last seven games. Other notes from the trip – Ondrej Pavelec started the trip with his 100th career win, Wheeler played his 400th NHL game, Jokinen scored against two of his former teams, getting two in New York and one in Florida. He has two, two goal games as a Jet, both at Madison Square Garden. Mark Stuart had his first goal of the season against the Islanders, and John Albert scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, that coming against the Rangers. DEMAR DEROZAN (Raptors): Hopefully, hes back sooner rather than later.VANCOUVER -- Its time to move on. Thats the message from Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault, who says the best way for his club to deal with the pain and frustration of losing in the Stanley Cup final is to focus on the upcoming season. "We have to turn the page on last year," Vigneault said Friday as veterans reported for the first day of training camp. "At the end of the day we didnt win. Were in this to win. I know we are going to have a very motivated group." Vancouver lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup on home ice to the Boston Bruins in June. The defeat was a bitter end to the most successful season in team history. The Canucks won the Presidents Trophy with the best record in the league for the first time in franchise history, while leading the league in scoring and fewest goals allowed. Vancouver also set franchise records for points (117), wins (54) and road wins (27). Even though the Canucks did a lot of things right, the season will be remembered for what went wrong against Boston. "We had a really great season," defenceman Dan Hamhuis said. "Its too bad it kind of gets summarized by one disappointing game at the end." As heart-breaking as that loss was, the Canucks now must focus on the long road back to the final. "It was a really difficult journey last year to get to where we were," said Hamhuis, who underwent surgery for a sports hernia this summer. "It might even be harder again this year. We are prepared for that. We got a good taste of that. We know what its going to take to get there. Guys are more hungry now than they ever have been." Around Vancouver theres concern the short summer gave the Canucks little time to recover from injuries. Theres also fear the players will find it hard to take games in October and November seriously. Captain Henrik Sedin said those are excuses the Bruins can use, but not the Canucks. "We lost in the finals," said Sedin. "We havent proven anything yet. "We are going to have to start over and win. That starts with Game 1." Coming away empty-handed after getting so close still bothers Sedin. "I dont think you are going to get over it in the next little bit," he said. "Its going to take some time. "You are going to have to win it to get over a loss like that." Players spent Friday having their fitness tested. They start skating on Saturday, with the first exhibition game set for Tuesday. The Canucks come to camp facing some questions and with several holes to fill in the lineup. Losing defenceman Christian Ehrhoff to free agency costs Vancouver 50 points on the blue--line.dddddddddddd "The defencemen coming back are going to need to step up," said Hamhuis. Centre Ryan Kesler and speedy forward Mason Raymond are both injured. That leaves a huge hole on Vancouvers second line. Kesler, last seasons Selke trophy winner, underwent hip surgery over the summer. Raymond is still recovering from a vertebrae compression fracture suffered in Game 6 against Boston. Kesler isnt sure when he will return. "Its coming along nicely," he said. "My original goal was the beginning of the season. Im not going to set a time frame. "My main goal is get back to 100 per cent health. How ever long that takes is up to my hip." Raymond isnt expected back in the lineup until November. Centre Manny Malhotra underwent two more procedures on his injured left eye during the summer. Malhotra returned to the lineup for the final after suffering a career-threatening eye injury in mid-March. "Everything that needed to be done was done," said Malhotra. "The rest is up to me how well I heal." Vigneault said the injuries open up chances for other players. "Players that wanted more ice time are going to have that opportunity to earn that ice time and show what they can do," he said. "The reason why you have a training camp is to permit player to come out and show what they can do." One player looking to prove himself is Cody Hodgson. The centre, who was picked 10th overall in the 2008 draft, has battled injuries in the past but comes to camp healthy. "Its been a great summer and I worked hard," said Hodgson. "Its a great opportunity." During the final, the Bruins pushed the Canucks around like a bully. There have been concerns the Canucks didnt add enough toughness in the summer. "We brought in some young players, some veteran players that have that dimension," said Vigneault. "Weve got eight exhibition games. Were going to see who is going to step up." Also looking to make an impression at camp will be some veterans hoping to salvage their careers. The Canucks have brought in forwards Owen Nolan, 39, and Todd Fedoruk, 32, plus 38-year-old goaltender Manny Legace. Goaltender Roberto Luongo said like every team Vancouvers goal is to win the Stanley Cup. The Canucks just have a better idea of the struggled involved. "Thats a long way ahead of us to be thinking that far," said Luongo. "We all saw what it took to get there. "It was hard and it was long. I dont think we should get ahead of ourselves right now. We have to be ready to go as a team." ' ' '

Baseballs most prominent agent, Scott Boras, openly criticized the Toronto Blue Jays stagnant offseason on Sunday, likening the team to a "car with a huge engine that is impeded by a big corporate stop sign." Speaking to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Boras, the man who represents the likes of Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder, 2013 AL Cy Young winner Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers and Washington Nationals phenom Bryce Harper, places the blame on general manager Alex Anthopouloss failure to dip into the free agent market on the shoulders of Jays ownership, a group Boras deems "a successful and committed ownership that needs to give their baseball people financial flexibility." "There is no one who has the asset base of Rogers," Boras said to Rosenthal. "[Torontos] a premium city. Its a premium owner with equity. And its a very, very good team that with additional premium talent could become a contending team." Outside of catcher Dioner Navarro, the Jays, tipped to be after free agent pitching and a second baseman, have remained entirely inactive while the likes of Ubaldo Jimenez, A.J. Burnett and Masahiro Tanaka found new clubs. Because the team has two protected first-round picks, the Jays seemingly would have leverage when it comes to compensation-eligible free agents. Anthopoulos, for his part, defended ownership on being informed of Borass remarks. "Our ownership has been outstanding and given us all the resources we need," said Anthopoulos. The Blue Jays and Boras have traditionally had a frosty relationship. Borass very first major contract showdown was between the Jays and reliever Bill Caudill in 1984. After acquiring the pitcher from the Oakland As, Boras negotiated a five-year extension for his client at $1.5 million a season that made him the highest paid player on the team. Caudill flamed out due to injury and was released in 1986 after pitching only just over 105 innings for the team. The acrimony from the deal lingered. In 2009, the Jays drafted lefty starter James Paxton of Ladner, BC. The Jays could not come to an agreement with Paxton, who was being advised by Boras at the time, and he chose to head back to the University of Kentucky to play for its baseball team. Blue Jays president Paul Beeston called into question the actual nature of Paxtons relationship with Boras. "Because it was Scott, the way you deal, you deal through him," Beeston told the Globe and Mail at the time. "You dont deal through the family." The NCAA allows its athletes to have "family advisers," but forbids them from having agents, as it would compromise their amateur status. Due to Beestons comments, the NCAA launched an investigation into Paxtons arrangement with Boras. Paxton did not participate with the investigation out of fear of being suspended by the school. Kentucky, fearing that the school would face sanctions if it allowed Paxton to play whilst under investigation, filed a motion that allowed Paxton to keep his scholarship and remain part of the team, but did not let him actually play in any games. Part of that filing included the suggestion that Paxton breached the "no agent" rule. Paxton, now a member of the Seattle Mariners, was eventually declared ineligible and left the school for a Texas team in the independent league. Boras currently represents two of the last three compensation free agents on the market (with starter Ervin Santana the other) in Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales. The Jays dont appear to have any interest in Morales, but could explore the possibility of slotting Drew in at second base. The 30-year-old former Red Sox shortstop has never played a game at second in his career. VANCOUVER -- What seemed almost impossible just two months ago became a reality Saturday with the announcement that Vancouver Canucks centre Manny Malhotra has been cleared to play in the Stanley Cup final. Malhotra suffered a serious eye injury March 16. At the time it was thought his season was over and there were concerns about his vision recovering. "Its a very exciting prospect for me at this point," Malhotra said. "Coming from where I was two months ago, making the statement the season was over, to potentially having a possibility to play in the Stanley Cup final is incredibility exciting for me." The Canucks will open the Stanley Cup against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday in Vancouver. Coach Alain Vigneault would not say if Malhotra will dress for the game. "Manny has officially been cleared to play," Vigneault said. "He is basically on a day-to-day basis. "I dont discuss lineup issues." Malhotra has undergone several surgeries since being hit in the left eye. On Saturday, the eye still looked bloodshot and the lid drooped. He didnt want to give any specifics on the treatments hes received or what procedures may be needed in the future. Malhotra was composed while speaking with the media for the first time since his injury. He did choke up with emotion when talking about the support he received from the Canuck organization and his teammates. "We have a real family environment around here," Malhotra said, his voice catching. "Were here to win, we are here to play hockey. "More important is the level of care we have for each other in the room. We are hockey players. At the end of the day, the level of respect we have for one another as friends, husbands, brothers and fathers, that really came to the forefront the last couple of months." The 30-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., was hurt when a pass deflected off the stick of Colorado Avalanche defenceman Erik Johnson into his eye. The Canucks announced March 21 he was lost for the season. But Malhotra has been skating with the team since May 12 and on Friday he was cleared for contact. Malhotra learned earlier this week he might be given the green light to play again. "I have been monitored almost daily for allmost two months," he said.dddddddddddd "The doctors were pretty pleased with the progression and the way things were looking. "They felt and saw there was an opportunity that if I felt confident enough and physically ready enough with the contact and awareness out there, playing could be a possibility." Malhotras teammates are anxious to see him return. "The main thing for him right now is timing," said forward Daniel Sedin. "Hes skating really well and hes moving the puck well. We are happy. Hes going to get better every day." Malhotra said he didnt rush into the decision to play again. "I have had very in-depth conversations with the doctors," he said. "I can assure you I wasnt flipping a coin in the change room deciding whether I was going to play or not. "They (doctors) have assured me everything is as it should be. Everything continues to look good. There is still some healing that needs to take place." In the past Malhotra did not wear a facemask. He said he will wear a full mask if he plays this season and look for some sort of shield for next year. Still, he isnt sure when he might return to the lineup. "As we get closer to Game 1 we will have a few more days of practice," he said. "This is not going to continue on and be a side story for this Cup final. "Myself and my teammates are focused on the task at hand. If I feel more comfortable, if I am game-ready, the coaches will make the decision at that time. If Im not ready, thats the case." Malhotra is a popular and respected player among his Canucks teammates, and has been seen around the Canucks dressing room, usually wearing dark glasses. He also has travelled with the club. Malhotra, a former first-round draft pick of the New York Rangers, signed a US$7.5-million, three-year contract as a free agent last summer with the Canucks. He centred Vancouvers third line of Raffi Torres and Jannik Hansen, a shutdown unit put on the ice to protect leads. Malhotra also killed penalties and usually took important defensive zone faceoffs. During the season he had 11 goals and 19 assists in 72 games. He was second in the NHL with a 61.7 per cent faceoff percentage when he was hurt. ' ' '

HAMILTON, Ont. -- With Justin Medlock booting field goals from anywhere in the B.C. Lions half of the field, even stalled offensive drives by Hamilton Tiger-Cats were deadly. Medlock hit all seven of his field-goal attempts, at one point hitting four-straight over 40 yards, as the Tiger-Cats routed the Lions 42-10 in CFL action Saturday night and ended BC.s winning streak at eight games. "The offence did a great job today," Medlock said. "(The quarterbacks) all moved the ball well. Its good to finish it up and help the team out." Medlock hit from 19, 44, 42, 48, 47, 29 and 35 yards. Thats a CFL season-high and only the third time a Ticat kicker has hit seven field goals in a game in team history. Paul Osbaldiston had one game with seven field goals and another with eight field goals. "Its good to join that company and make all your kicks," he said, adding that it also matched a personal best, having hit seven in a game when he was in Toronto in 2009. "However you can get on the board, however you can get points, you take them," said Hamilton quarterback Kevin Glenn, who sat out the second half while back-up Quinton Porter took over. "Weve got a good field-goal kicker, so we put him in a position to kick field goals, which is great. I wish we would have had more touchdowns, but we came away with a victory." Porter came in late in the second quarter and rushed for one touchdown -- his league-leading ninth rushing TD -- and passed for another. The Ticats defence held B.C. scoreless in the second half. "I think we out hit them today," said Hamilton linebacker Renauld Williams. "We outran them. We were just faster than them." With B.C. losing, Edmonton now sits in sole possession of first place in the CFL West Division. The Lions (9-7) hadnt lost a game since August 13 when they were defeated by Winnipeg 30-17. Edmontons 31-24 win over Toronto on Friday meant B.C. needed a win over Hamilton in order to keep pace with the Eskimos atop the West Division standings. "They came out and they hit us in the mouth," said B.C. quarterback Travis Lulay, who completed 17 of 36 pass attempts for 218 yards and one TD. "They set the tone early and we couldnt counterpunch. They were the better football team today." B.C. plays Edmonton next week, so still has a chance to catch them for top spot. "Fortunately, we have them on our schedule," Lulay said. "This one will hurt for the night, but well get back to work and know that we can still make a run." The Ticats (8-8) ended a two-game losing streak, but have played their final game at Ivor Wynne stadium this season. Winnipegs 26-25 win over Montreal earlier Saturday means the Ticats will finish third in the East. Hamilton receiver Bakari Grant and linebacker Ray Mariuz also scored touchdowns while Lions receiver Geroy Simon scored for B.C. Lions kicker Paul McCallum hit his lone field-goal from 21 yards, and was intercepted when he tried to pass on a fake punt late in the game that led to Mariuzs TD. Simon became the leagues second-leading all-time receiver with his 25-yard TD catch, passing Allen Pitts but still behind Milt Stegall. He came in with 14,885 yards and finished the game with 42 more, for a total 14,927. Stegall has 15,153 yards. "Its just a sign of longevity and having a lot of success," said the 13-year veteran. "Ive been on very good teams for a number of years. Ive played with some great quarterbacks. Its an honour to be where Im at, but Im not playing for the individual stuff. Im playing for the Grey Cup." Porter scored his touchdown when he took over from Glenn on the Ticats final possession of the first half. Head coach Marcel Bellefeuille had said he would be using a quarterback tandem heading into the playoffs. Glenn finished with nine completions on 18 attempts for 116 yards, no TDs or interceptions. The Ticats led 16-10 at halftime. Hamiltons Marcus Thigpen opened the third quarter with a 43-yard kick-off return that set up Medlocks 48-yard field goal and boosted Hamiltons lead to 19-10. Medlock returned to clean up the next possession, after Porter was sacked for an 11-yard loss, with a 47-yarder to give Hamilton a 22-10 lead. Hamilton running back Avon Cobourne fumbled on the B.C. 26-yard line, and the Lions recovered but couldnt do anything with the ball. That led to a 37-yard punt by McCallum being returned 36 yards by Thigpen to the B.C. 22. The kicker also had to do his own tackling to keep Thigpen from the endzone. Two plays later, Porter found Grant for the 24-yard catch-and-run TD and a 29-10 Hamilton lead heading into the fourth. Medlocks sixth field goal and Mariuz interception gave the Ticats the 39-10 lead. Mariuz then recovered a fumble on B.C.s next possession. With less than four minutes to play, the Ticats sent in third-string quarterback Jason Boltus to finish the game and Medlock finished the scoring. http://www.louisvuittonoutletshop.com/. Barcelona also left injured defenders Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba out of its squad for the trip to Glasgow. "Im feeling great," Canadas top male diver told CTVOlympics.ca this week, speaking from Germany where he recently finished seventh in the synchronized springboard in a tune-up event.PARIS -- Always so avant-garde, Serena Williams started this years French Open fashion of addressing the Court Philippe Chatrier spectators in their language. Rafael Nadal followed suit after his first-round victory, as did Roger Federer, whos done it for years. And Novak Djokovic also got in on a ritual thats become de rigueur, telling fans in French at the end of a rain-disrupted Day 3 at the clay-court tournament, "The ambiance was awesome." Thats certainly one way to endear oneself to the locals. "I really wanted to finish tonight," Djokovic said after wrapping up his match shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, "although I know the crowd wanted to watch a little longer." Because of the wet weather, there was not much tennis to see -- only two of the four matches originally scheduled for Tuesday in the main stadium actually began. So Djokovic spent much of the afternoon wondering when he would wind up taking the court for what turned out to be a 7-6 (5), 6-4, 7-5 victory over David Goffin in the first round of the only Grand Slam tournament the Serb has yet to win. "It was a difficult day, because we have been waiting for hours and hours. I think I warmed up five or six times today," Djokovic said. "In these conditions ... you need to adjust your game and tactics, because its quite different than comparing to the conditions when its dry and sunny." Unlike Wimbledon and the Australian Open, Roland Garros does not have a roof at any court. Unlike the U.S. Open, though, at least there is a definitive timeline to build one. French Open officials said last weekend they would proceed with plans to put a retractable roof over centre court despite a judicial ruling in March that put the project on hold. The roof would be completed in 2018 as part of a $440 million renovation. Last years final between champion Nadal and runner-up Djokovic was halted in the fourth set Sunday because of rain, and they resumed Monday, the first time since 1973 the French Open didnt finish on time. Djokovic was pleased to learn that a cover is coming to the main court in Paris, and he also is eager for them to install artificial lights. Both of those improvements would have contributed to a more stress-free evening Tuesday for the man ranked and seeded No. 1. He and the 58th-ranked Goffin, a Belgian who was one of the revelations at Roland Garros a year ago, did not begin until after 6:30 p.m., even though theirs was the second match of the day. They finished as light was fading. "It was a long day," Djokovic said. At least he got to play. Because of showers that began in the morning, there was a delay of more than 2 1/2 hours at the start. Then, after only 1 1/2 hours of action, another stop of more than an hour came. In the end, 26 of 40 scheduled singles matches were completed, three were suspended in progress, and 11 were postponed entirely. That means players such as Victoria Azarenka, the reigning Australian Open champion, was slated for first-round action Wednesday, the fourth day of the tournament (when, by the way, the forecast called for more rain). That sets up a ssituation where Azarenka, for example, would need to win seven matches across 11 days to take home the trophy, while 2002 champion Williams -- who got to begin the tournament Sunday and was scheduled to play in the second round Wednesday -- would have her seven matches spread over 14 days if she goes the distance.dddddddddddd. Also among those who had yet to play a real point heading into Wednesday was 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova. The Day 4 program featured second-round matches for 2009 champion Federer and 2012 runner-up Sara Errani. Tuesdays winners included 2010 French Open runner-up and 2011 U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur, who beat 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan 6-0, 6-2. "It was spitting a little bit when we went out there," Stosur said. "You think, Oh, are we going to start or are we not? Lucky for me, I was able to finish the match before this last downpour came." Another Australian, Bernard Tomic -- whose father was barred from Roland Garros after being accused this month of head-butting Tomics hitting partner -- stopped because of a torn right hamstring while trailing Victor Hanescu 7-5, 7-6 (8), 2-1. Three other men retired during matches: No. 28 Florian Mayer (right thigh), Alejandro Falla (stomach problems), Simone Bolelli (right wrist). No. 9 Stanislas Wawrinka, No. 12 Tommy Haas and No. 16 Philipp Kohlschreiber and No. 26 Grigor Dimitrov advanced, along with 20-year-old American Jack Sock in his French Open debut. If Dimitrov -- he and Maria Sharapova are an item, so he was asked Tuesday about dealing with paparazzi -- reaches the third round, he could face Djokovic. That would be an intriguing matchup, given that Dimitrov defeated Djokovic on clay at Madrid three weeks ago. "This is the kind of matches Id always want to play in," Dimitrov said. "I feel good on the big courts and playing against good players." Djokovic found Goffin in possession of that same attitude. In 2012, Goffin got into the French Open field as a "lucky loser" -- someone who loses in qualifying but is put in the main draw because another player withdrew -- and made it all the way to the fourth round. Thats when Goffin got to face Federer, his idol, and even took a set off the owner of the most career major titles before losing the match. "He has a good chance to have a good future," Djokovic said. "He likes playing here, obviously. He likes playing on a big stage." Perhaps. But Tuesdays key moment came in the first-set tiebreaker, with Goffin serving at 5-all. After he faulted once, a fan yelled, "Allez, David!" The 22-year-old Goffin then proceeded to miss his second serve, too, for a double-fault that gave Djokovic a set point. Goffin looked in the direction of the offending shout with palms up, as if to say, "What did you do that for?!" "Thats what happens sometimes. When you play in Davis Cup, you see that on every serve, basically," Goffin said. "Anyway, it was up to me to focus my mind. This is the type of thing that can happen, and can happen to anybody. So tough luck." ' ' '

RENTON, Wash. -- The Seattle Seahawks have added needed depth on the defensive line by agreeing to terms with free agent defensive tackle Jason Jones. The team confirmed the agreement Saturday. Terms of the deal were not announced, but Jones agent, Mike McCartney, said on Twitter the deal is for one-year. Jones has spent his first four seasons with the Tennessee Titans where he had 15 1/2 sacks. He was used as a defensive tackle and end last season, and his versatility fits with Seattles defensive philosophy. The 6-foot-5, 276-pound Jones started 15 games in 2010 and 13 last season. http://www.cheapnfljerseybest.com/nba-jerseys/. LONDON -- West Ham will head into 2014 stuck in the Premier Leagues relegation zone after twice surrendering the lead to draw 3-3 with West Bromwich Albion in a thrilling match at Upton Park on Saturday. Former France striker Nicolas Anelka scored twice in a five-minute span -- his first goals for West Brom -- to put his team 2-1 ahead at halftime after Joe Cole had given West Ham a fourth-minute lead with a low shot. Substitute Modibo Maiga curled a shot underneath goalkeeper Ben Foster for West Hams equalizer in the 65th before heading across goal for Kevin Nolan to net a flying volley two minutes later, the captains first goal since the start of the season. That looked like giving the hosts a victory in what under-pressure manager Sam Allardyce had labeled a "must-win" game. But Saido Berahinos low finish in the 69th earned a point for West Brom, which is unbeaten in threee matches under caretaker manager Keith Downing.dddddddddddd Of the teams to start the day in the bottom six, only West Ham hasnt changed its manager since the start of the season. "Any of the six teams in trouble, if Sam is out of a job, they hire him to keep them up," Nolan said. "The chairmen have been brilliant with him, they understand weve had injuries. Were all in it together. "We feel well be in the Premier League come the end of the season." West Ham, which has won just one of its last 12 games, was fortunate to come away with a point after Berahino curled a free kick against the post in the 82nd. By running on to Chris Brunts pass and clipping home a finish in the 40th to make it 1-1, Anelka became the ninth player to score for six different Premier League clubs. It was his first goal in the English top division since August 2011. ' ' '

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks were struggling. Nikolai Khabibulin was yanked in the second period, and the Ottawa Senators looked ready to put away a big road win. Then Corey Crawford came in, and Jonathan Toews took off. Toews had three goals and an assist, Crawford made 14 saves in relief of an ineffective Khabibulin and the Blackhawks rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Senators on Tuesday night. "The last couple times weve been down in the third period, or down a goal a two later on in the game, weve found a way to finish better than if weve had the lead," Toews said. "We have that confidence that we can come back if were down a goal, or whatever." Andrew Shaw scored twice and Marian Hossa had a goal and two assists for the Blackhawks, who trailed 4-2 with 8:46 left in the second period. It was Hossas 100th goal with Chicago and No. 439 for his career. The Senators scored three times in a span of four shots in the second, but were unable to hold off the suddenly high-scoring Blackhawks. Kyle Turris and Milan Michalek each had a goal and an assist in Ottawas fourth loss in five games. "The things we did to get the lead at 4-2, whether their goalie was good or bad or indifferent, we did a lot of good things to make the score 4-2 and then we stopped doing them," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean said. Toews sparked Chicagos rally when he tested Craig Anderson with 5 1/2 minutes left in the second, and his first attempt popped over the goal. The captain then skated to the back of the net and slammed in a wraparound for his fifth goal of the season. The Blackhawks kept coming in the third period, and Toews tied it at 4 when he finished off a perfect pass from defenceman Johnny Oduya at 1:20. Toews completed his third career hat trick when he pushed a rebound into an empty net midway through the period for a 5-4 Chicago lead. "Jonny had a special game," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "If youre a fan and you watched him play tonight, youre going to go Wow, that was a special performance." Shaw and Ottawas Zack Smith exchanged goals down the stretch, and the Blackhawks held on for their second victory in as many nights. The defending Stanley Cup champions beat Minnesota 5-1 on Monday. Clarke MacArthur had two assists for the Senators, and Anderson finished with 34 saves. MacArthur missed Ottawas previous game with what the team called a minor injury. "We scored five goals, we should win the game," Anderson said. "We need to take a little bit more pride and keep the puck out of our net and play a little tougher in front of our net." Ottawa appeared to be in control after one dizzying stretch in the second. MacArthur sparked the scoring spree when he charged toward the net from the right side, setting up Turris power-play score from in-close that gave Ottawa a 2-1 lead at 6:51. Hossa responded 50 seconds later, converting a nice pass from Toews, but Senators were just getting started against the slumping Khabibulin. Joe Corvos long slap shot whistled by teammate Bobby Ryan and into the net for his first goal of the season. Then Mika Zibanejad skated past sliding Blackhawks defenceman Duncan Keith and beat Khabibulin to make it 4-2 at 11:14. That was enough for Quenneville, who replaced Khabibulin with regular starter Crawford. Khabibulin made 18 saves and has allowed 10 goals while facing 47 shots in his past two games. "No, I cant really say," Quenneville said when asked if he can pinpoint why Khabibulin is struggling so much. "It was just one of those nights. Well look at it and try to get better." Crawfords entry prompted a big cheer from the crowd, and the Blackhawks seemed to feed off the switch. Sharp had two assists and Toews extended his points streak to five games. Toews has five goals and four assists during the stretch. "I dont know if its anything special going on," Toews said. "Sometimes you go through ups and downs when youre scoring and things are going in, and other nights, maybe not so much." NOTES: C Michal Handzus (upper-body injury) was among the Blackhawks scratches, and Quenneville said he probably would remain out through this weekend. Trying not to look too far ahead, the Spaniard was at home in Spain, just thinking about his badly injured knee. Nadal didnt know if he would play competitive tennis again. "The thoughts about the future? Just focus on recover, focus on try to find a solution for my knee, and thats it. Working every day, trying to do different things to try to be back," the 13-time Grand Slam winner said Wednesday of his feelings at the time. Things have changed dramatically. Twelve months later in London, Nadal capped his remarkable comeback on Wednesday by clinching the year-end No. 1 spot for the third time in his career. Just nine months after returning from his career-threatening injury, Nadal became the first player to hold, lose and regain the year-end No. 1 spot twice by beating Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) at the ATP finals. Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl did it once in their careers. Nadal, who beat Wawrinka for the 12th time in as many matches, cant be overtaken by No. 2 Novak Djokovic. Its the first time since 2010 that the Spaniard, who returned from a seven-month injury layoff in February, ends the year as the top-ranked player. "It is one of the best things that I did in my career: come back to No. 1 after three seasons. Thats very difficult in our sport, and after a very important injury," Nadal said after celebrating with fist pumps and leaps as if he had won the tournament -- the only major event missing from his victory collection. Nadal advanced to the semifinals of the year-end tournament because of his straight-sets victory over the Swiss. The Spaniards season will be remembered as the story of a stunning comeback during which he captured 10 titles -- including two Grand Slams. Following his defeat in the second round at Wimbledon last year and the extended absence that followed, only the boldest of bookmakers would have bet on Nadal achieving such success in 2013. When he resumed playing, his left knee was still causing him pain. However, Nadals confidence grew during a Latin-America tour which produced a 12-1 match record, including titles at Sao Paulo and Acapulco. After securing his eighth French Open title, the only real disappointment of the year came at Wimbledon, where he lost to Belgian Steve Darcis in the first round -- before adding a second US Open title. The 27-year-old Spaniard also won five ATP Worrld Tour Masters 1000 events and went undefeated on hard courts (26-0) through to the China Open final, where he lost to Djokovic.dddddddddddd Nadal, who overtook the Serb for the No. 1 ranking last month, said he started to think seriously about the No. 1 spot after his triumph at the U.S. Open. "Because after winning five Masters 1000, two Grand Slams, all the things, I felt that I had everything to be there," he said. "But at the same time, I have a zero in Australia, I have a zero in Miami, I have a zero in Wimbledon. A lot of zeros to be No. 1. I think it is a great effort because I have unbelievable competitors in front. That makes the year end No. 1 very, very special." Nadal beat David Ferrer in his opening match on Tuesday and kept the momentum going against Wawrinka. After breaking him in the fifth game, he looked in complete control. Raising his game on important points, he erased Wawrinkas two first break points to build a 5-3 lead and looked set for an easy victory. But the tournament debutant held on as Nadal served for the set, sending a sizzling crosscourt backhand that the top-ranked player returned out of court to earn a third break point. He seized his opportunity, wrongfooting Nadal with a crosscourt forehand. The tie break was a tense affair. At 5-5, Nadal defended superbly to return a devastating forehand down the line from his opponent, who shanked his next shot. Nadal sealed the set at the first opportunity -- as Wawrinka stumbled as he went for an easy volley before smashing his racket on the floor. Nadal then converted the second of three break points in the fourth game of the second set as Wawrinka sailed a forehand long. But as in the first set, Wawrinka battled his way back into the match, winning his next service game at love before taking Nadals serve for the second time with a volley that clipped the net cord and bounced over. Both played more aggressively in the closing stages and held serve until a second tiebreak. Nadal made the most of Wawrinkas mistakes to take a 3-0 lead, but his gritty Swiss opponent took a series of risks with his returns and rallied to reach set point at 6-5. Nadal saw off the danger with a smash, pumping his fist in relief, before sealing victory on his first match point. "He is playing better tennis than me," said Wawrinka, who has yet to win a set against Nadal. "When it gets important in the match, for him its just normal. Hes just playing his best tennis or he is playing even better." ' ' '

ADELAIDE, Australia -- Ian Thorpe knew the instant hed finished his 100-meter freestyle heat that he wouldnt be competing at the London Olympics. He lingered in the outside lane until the swimmers in the next race had started, staring at his time on the scoreboard before slowly dragging himself out of the pool. If he was shocked and "gutted" by his failure to reach the 200 freestyle final to start his program, failing to progress from the heats in the 100 on Sunday morning hit harder. But he was more circumspect this time: the five-time Olympic champion vowed to continue swimming, possibly restoring the 400 freestyle to his program and maybe even having a go at qualifying for the 2016 Olympics. And he said he wasnt sorry about risking his reputation by making a comeback. "When I started this I wanted to get back into the pool. I wanted to start racing again, I wanted to be competitive again and I wanted to go to the Olympics," he said. "I still want to do all of those things. "Ive missed out on what was a huge goal for me to accomplish in this short period of time, but still the desire I had pre to this, its still there." Asked if he would reset his sights on Rio de Janeiro in 2016, the 29-year-old Thorpe laughed, paused for a few moments, then said: "Im not going to rule anything out at the moment." Hes planning on being in London for the Olympics because he feels like hes been part of the buildup process. The regret was he didnt give himself enough time to prepare. His famous surge -- powered by his big frame and his size 17 feet -- just wasnt there. He quit in 2006 and didnt return to competitive swimming until late last year. "Its hard coming to this competition and really, you know, failing in what I set out to do," he said. "Im disappointed that I really havent been able to race in a way thats reflective of the work that Ive done and how Ive trained. "I dont regret giving this a go. Compared to how Ive raced before, how Ive competed and the success that Ive had, this does look like doom ... But Im glad I was willing to put myself out there to give this a shot." The Thorpedo, as he was globally recognized, virtually ruled the pool until he retired, saying then he was tired of the constant training and living in the public eye. He travelled, moved abroad, returned to Australia and studied at university, went through some financial difficulties, then decided last year on a comeback. His time of 50.35 seconds ranked him 21st in the heats of the 100, with only the top 16 advancing to the semifinals. World champion James Magnussen led the qualifiers in 48.26. "Thorpie has been someone Ive always admired as a swimmer, so it is upsetting for him and the rest of us do feel his pain," Magnussen said. "It would have been great to have him there in London, its disappointing that hes not going to be there, but all I can do now is focus on my race." Thorpes best shot at London was to qualify as a relay swimmer in the 200, so competing in the 100 was always a last-ditch effort. When he quit competitive swimming nearly six years ago, he was the reigning 200 and 400 Olympic champion. Thorpes world records in the 200 and 400 were enduring. The 200 world mark he set at the 2001 world championships in Japan was only broken eight years later by Germanys Paul Biedermann, who was wearing a fastsuit now banned by world governing body FINA. It was a similar situation in the 400. The mark of 3:40.08 Thorpe set at the 2002 Commonwealth Games was improved upon by Biedermann -- seven years later and again at the 2009 worlds in Rome -- but the German swimmer only improved the record by .01 of a second, sleek full bodysuit and all. Regardless of his past exploits, and after posting a series of modest times in meets across Asia and Europe, Thorpe admitted before the trials that he was concerned about his limited preparation. Thorpe won his heat in the 100 Sunday, the ninth of 12, but was very slow to leave the pool after looking at the scoreboard and seeing his time. He seemed to know already that his time wasnt good enough to advance. The winner of the next heat swam 48.85, and there were 13 swimmers already ahead of him when Magnussen led the last heat into the water. Thorpe needed to finish first or second in the 100 or 200 to earn individual selection, or place in the top six in either event to be considered as a relay swimmer. He didnt get close, even though Sundays time was better than his previous best since his return of 50.76. Michael Klim, another veteran coming out of retirement, clocked 49.79 to qualify 11th for the semifinals. Australian head coach Leigh Nugent said Thorpe showed signs he could again be a force in the sport. "Hes got it all, its there, you just have to train him," Nugent said. "What he attempted was incredibly difficult and coming here and doing what hes done is an achievement in itself, but its part of a bigger process." Thorpe swam an impressive heat time in the 200 but failed to make the final after finishing 12th of the 16 semifinalists. He was watching from the stands on Saturday night when 20-year-old Thomas Fraser-Holmes won the 200 in 1:46.88 ahead of Kenrick Monk (1:57.16). Thorpes return generated enormous exposure for the Australian Olympic trials, with the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre brimming to its 3,000 capacity for the night sessions which Thorpe was expected to compete in. On Sunday morning, the venue announcer had to ask the crowd for silence at the start of Thorpes 100. The quiet lasted only until Thorpe hit the water. Thorpe is still a star in Australia, having won five Olympic gold medals, 11 world championships and setting 13 world records after bursting onto the scene in 1999. "Getting knocked down from a position of immense success," Thorpe said, will be the "kick along" that his comeback needs. "Im pleased that when Ive raced and Ive struggled through racing that its made me more determined to keep going." MLB.J. Napoli also came close when a free kick from Jorginho hit the post in the 42nd. NFL. New York general manager Glen Sather said Biron, the backup to workhorse goalie Henrik Lundqvist, will be out indefinitely. NEW YORK -- During a season of nearly unprecedented pitching success, Max Scherzer relished a rare opportunity to talk about his bat. "Definitely my own," he said. "P-100, says Max Scherzer on it." Scherzer outpitched Matt Harvey in their All-Star rematch, striking out 11 and hitting a stunning RBI double that sent the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday. Scherzer (19-1) joined Rube Marquard in 1912 and Roger Clemens in 2001 as the only major league pitchers to win 19 of their first 20 decisions in a season. But it was his big hit off a hard-throwing ace that had teammates talking -- and Scherzer crowing. "Ive got a replay and Im sending a text to everybody right now. It was definitely 96 (mph) down and away, and I laced it for a double," Scherzer said. "Im never going to shut up. Im just going to keep talking trash the whole time." Andy Dirks had three hits off Harvey, who gave up a career-high 13 over 6 2-3 innings against Detroits powerful lineup. He pitched out of trouble to keep the Mets in the game, but they lost for the fifth time in his last six starts. Missing injured slugger David Wright, the Mets have managed only two runs during a three-game skid. They were outhit 15-3 by the AL Central leaders, who got aggressive against Harvey (9-5) despite late-afternoon shadows. Harvey and Scherzer squared off on the same Citi Field mound 5 1/2 weeks ago in the All-Star game. Scherzer started and pitched one inning for the American League, which tossed a three-hitter in a 3-0 victory -- same as the Tigers on Saturday. Harvey got the ball for the NL, escaped an early jam and struck out three over two shutout innings to delight the home crowd. The Mets said this matchup marked the third time All-Star starters had faced each other on another occasion during the same season, according to research by the Elias Sports Bureau. The first two came in the World Series: Mets ace Dwight Gooden opposed Clemens and the Boston Red Sox in 1986, and Red Ruffing of the New York Yankees faced Cincinnatis Paul Derringer in 1939. "Its just something fun to be a part of," Scherzer said. "I always enjoy facing the best." Scherzer, given the best offensive support in the AL at about 7 1/2 runs per nine innings, allowed three hits and four walks in six innings. He struck out seven of eight hitters during one stretch. "I pitched well today but I didnt pitch efficiently," Scherzer said. "I wasnt quite as sharp as usual, but I thought I made big pitches when I needed to and that was the most important thing." New York loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but a good play by Dirks on Ike Davis double off the base of the right-field wall held Daniel Murphy at third. Scherzer struck out rookie Juan Lagares with a high fastball at 96 mph. John Buck popped up the next pitch, and a fired-up Scherzer pounded his glove in excitement, knowing his day was done after 118 pitches. Jose Alvarez set down all four batters he faced, and Joaquin Benoit worked a perfect ninth ffor his 17th save.dddddddddddd Don Kelly added a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Pitching before a crowd of 35,636 on a beautiful, 78-degree day, Harvey didnt have it early. He gave up hits to six of his first 10 batters, and the Tigers scored twice in the second inning. "Just a poor performance," Harvey said. "Im getting pretty tired, but so is everybody and you have to work through it." Dirks led off with a double and went to third on Brayan Penas single. One out later, Scherzer showed bunt on one pitch and then swung at the next, lashing an RBI double over shortstop in his first plate appearance of the season. Turns out, Scherzer said, he was supposed to be bunting. He didnt realize the sign was still on. A giddy Scherzer clapped his hands and cracked a smile at second base as the Detroit bench broke up in amusement. "He turned on it. We were shocked. We went crazy," said teammate Torii Hunter, who called Scherzer the "modern-day Babe Ruth" and acknowledged the rest of the Tigers will never hear the end of it. It was Scherzers first hit and RBI in nine at-bats since joining the Tigers in 2010, but he did bat a respectable .226 with two doubles and three RBIs for the Diamondbacks in 2009. "In Arizona we took it very seriously, pitchers hitting in the National League," he said. Thats when fellow ace Justin Verlander came by in the clubhouse. He asked if Scherzer was still talking about hitting, and scoffed. "See, hes so jealous. So jealous," Scherzer said. "He cant take it." On Friday, Scherzer said he was looking forward to the challenge of pitching against Harvey in their much-anticipated rematch. But the Tigers right-hander lamented the fact that a rare chance to hit would come against such a dominant opponent. "I feel like the cards are stacked against me," Scherzer said. Not at all. Austin Jackson drove in another run with an infield single, but Harvey prevented further damage and settled down during the middle innings. He kept the Mets in it with the help of left fielder Eric Young Jr., who threw out a hobbled Omar Infante at the plate in the seventh. "What we saw today is a guy whos working as hard as he can," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "But youre seeing the effects of his first full season up here. Its a grind and hes doing the best he can." NOTES: Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Victor Martinez, normally the DH, will probably catch again Sunday. Martinez, who missed last season following knee surgery, started behind the plate Friday night for the first time since Aug. 4, 2011. "Hes standing, hes breathing, 98.6 temperature, I guess hes OK," Leyland said. ... Martinez and Hunter were rested. SS Jose Iglesias was out of the lineup with a sore left elbow after he was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning Friday. X-rays were negative, but Leyland said Iglesias couldnt bend his swollen arm and wouldnt be available off the bench. Leyland hoped Iglesias could play Sunday. ... New York wore orange Los Mets jerseys on Fiesta Latina Day. ' ' '

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Falcons, who will be without injured wide receiver Roddy White in Sundays game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have signed receiver Darius Johnson from the practice squad. Johnson, who joined the Falcons as an undrafted college free agent from SMU, led Atlanta with 13 catches for 158 yards and one touchdown in the preseason. The Falcons placed leading receiver Julio Jones on injured reserve with a foot injury and signed receiver Brian Robiskie last week. White, who has hamstring and ankle injuries, will miss the first game of his nine-year career, ending his streak of playing in 133 consecutive regular-season games. Calgary is still stinging from its lopsided 35-7 home loss to the Edmonton Eskimos on Labour Day. The good news for Hufnagel and the Stampeders is that the rematch goes Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium between the West Division co-leaders. Dont miss a moment of the action live on TSN and TSN Mobile TV. As well, watch live streaming and join the live blog on TSN.ca. It all begins at 9pm et/6pm pt. "I expect them to respond positively and understand what our downfall was," Hufnagel said when asked of his expectation for his team. "Weve played Edmonton twice and come out on the short end both times and need to do everything better. "We need to coach better, play better and hopefully have a different result." The Eskimos (6-3) emphatically snapped a three-game losing streak Monday while handing Calgary (6-3) its first loss in five games in clinching the season series. Edmonton forced four turnovers and outscored its provincial rival 32-0 in the second and third quarters combined after falling behind 7-0 in the first. A tenacious Edmonton defence made life miserable for Calgary starter Henry Burris, who finished just 13-of-23 passing for 132 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked three times and lost two of three fumbles. Often following a lopsided loss, a football coach will skip the formality of watching the video, but Hufnagel felt it was important his players sit through and watch the contest. "You watch it, you correct it, you make the players watch it and do better," he said. Edmonton was buoyed by the return of defensive lineman Greg Peach and receiver Adarius Bowman from injury Monday. Peach had five tackles, forced a fumble and recovered another that led to two Eskimos touchdowns while Bowman registered five catches for a game-high 81 yards and a TD. Bowman also took a cross-field lateral pass from Jason Armstead on a punt return before scampering 31 yards. A win Friday would not only give Edmonton a two-point lead over Calgary atop the West Division standings but also a sweep of the season series. At the very least the Eskimos have already clinched the season series, meaning theyd finish ahead of their provincial rivals if the two clubs ended the regular season tied. "I try not to think too far aheadd at times .dddddddddddd.. but if we can get this one it would put us back in first place, said Bowman. "Sweeping Calgary all three games we play them, thats big. Despite the lopsided score, Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray didnt have a particularly big day, finishing 14-of-21 passing for 131 yards and two TDs. Backup Kerry Joseph completed 3-of-4 passes for 36 yards while No. 3 Eric Ward missed the only pass he attempted. "Our defence put us in a lot of good situations," Ray said. "We had a lot of short fields to work with. "We got four turnovers and the good thing was we were able to capitalize on most of them. Our defence did a tremendous job of setting us up offensively. Shortly after being hired as Edmontons head coach in December, Kavis Reed spent a lot of time watching previous Labour Day matchups between the two teams as well as film of the Stampeders in particular. And with very good reason. The Stampeders finished atop the West Division last year with a CFL-best 13-5 record, while Edmonton was fourth in the conference at 7-11 and missed the playoffs. That resulted in the Eskimos making a coaching change, with Reed, Winnipegs defensive co-ordinator last season, replacing Richie Hall on the sidelines. "Last year Calgary did a very good job against the Eskimos and did a lot of things physically against the team," Reed said. "That was the gauge I wanted to use for building this team. "We were going to be a team that wasnt going to be bullied anymore. I said that in the beginning and thats the way Ive always felt and that is we cannot be bullied. If we are, then were going to get blown out as it was last year. Its a message, Reed says, his team has heard. "These guys are taking it to heart," he said. "Theyre trying to play up to the team thats arguably the best in the West in Calgary. "In order to be a successful team you have to have a gauge and Calgary is that team. And for that reason Reed says completing the sweep wont be easy for Edmonton. "I expect Calgary fully to make adjustments," he said. "Good teams like the Calgary Stampeders are going to come out and play very good football Friday and we know that. "We know Calgary is going to study the film very carefully, their coaching staff is going to make adjustments and we have to try to be ahead of the curve." ' ' '

DUNEDIN, Fla. -- One of the most intriguing competitions for a roster spot on the Toronto Blue Jays roster is at left field. Thats where Travis Snider, their first-round pick in the 2006 draft, will be trying to regain the position he gave up last season to Eric Thames. "Thats going to be the daily watch," manager John Farrell said Friday after his players finished a five-inning intrasquad game in preparation for Saturdays spring opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Snider played 49 games for Toronto in 2011, batting .225, an average that has dropped dramatically each of his past three seasons after hitting .301 as a rookie in 2008. His struggles got him two demotions to Triple-A Las Vegas. Thames, in his first major league season, batted .262 in 95 games last year. Snider had a double in three at-bats and Thames was 0 for 2 on Friday. "Its good to get out there and play the game," Snider said. "It gets a little, I dont want to say monotonous, but when youre facing live batting practice you just have to get locked in." Ricky Romero, starting his fourth season with the Blue Jays, is their ace, winning 13, 14 and 15 games in his first three years, with an ERA that dropped to 2.92 in 2011. Romero was accustomed to pitching with minimal run support. "I thought he did an excellent job of that a year ago," Farrell said. "As he channeled his emotions in the right way, it allowed him to execute on a consistent basis in those tight games. Thats what has allowed him to evolve into the pitcher he is now." Romero, who pitched the first inning, said he was "a little excited when I got out there, just to get on that mound and see hitters and see an umpire and all that good stuff. ... You get into game mode." At one point he escaped a man-on-third, no-out situation. "Thats where youve got to slow the game down and make pitches. Thats what I did. I know its preseason but Im a competitor, man. I dont want that guy to score, no matter if its a practice game or whatever it is. My job is to leave that guy at third." Farrell said his three areas of concern as spring training begins, "is, one, we stay healthy, two, that we get the answers from a personnel standpoint answered and, three, that we set the tone from a mindset from the starting pitchers, and really from pitching overall, to attack the (strike) zone and pitch to contact early. "There are still jobs to be won but through the first four or five days of spring training everyones going to get on the field. The guys that start (Saturday), well try to get them three at-bats, then well look to fill in behind them." At the moment, though, "Everybodys looking for a different colour (uniform) to show up and see a different team, across the field," Farrell said. "Itll be good to begin that next phase of spring training." http://www.eaglesnflofficial.com/authentic-harold-carmichael-jersey-womens.html. 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell while figuring out which players can make the biggest difference and hold the greatest value. http://www.eaglesnflofficial.com/authentic-reggie-white-jersey-womens.html.ca Fantasy Editor Scott Cullen and NFL Editors Ben Fisher and Mitch Ward discuss three hot fantasy football topics. http://www.eaglesnflofficial.com/authentic-nick-foles-jersey-womens.html. Three times. The year was 2006, the city was Casper, Wyoming and the best friend was – and still is – current Orioles reliever Pedro Strop. INDIANAPOLIS -- He plays offence. Hes won at least two Super Bowls, and he was the MVP the last time the Patriots won the NFL championship. Know who it is? "Id have to say Tom," New England safety Patrick Chung said Monday. Nope, not Tom Brady. The same question seemed to stump running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis for a few seconds, too. Then he said its really not important who got the honour in a game where the biggest reward is the Vince Lombardi Trophy that goes to the NFL champion. "To me, MVPs dont matter," he said. "The only thing that really matters is us going out there and performing well." And it doesnt matter to Deion Branch, either. He was the Super Bowl MVP when the Patriots beat the Eagles 24-21 seven years ago for their third championship in four years. Hes been overlooked a bit this season, with Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez grabbing most of Bradys passes and the headlines. "Thats cool," said Branch, who has that MVP trophy stored safely in a glass case at his home. "I just do my job. I cant worry about whos controlling it and whos saying A, B, C, D. I just do my job Im not here to be the one that (says), Hey I need all the attention. Thats not me." His contribution doesnt escape the discriminating eye of coach Bill Belichick as he prepares his team for the Super Bowl against the New York Giants on Sunday. "I couldnt imagine anybody on the team not thinking that Deion Branch has a tremendous importance to our football team," Belichick said. "I dont care if they play offence, defence or wash the towels." Brady was MVP of the Patriots first two Super Bowl wins in 2002 and 2004. Then he threw for two touchdowns among his 23 completions in their next championship game. But it was Branch, who caught nearly half of them, who was MVP after tying a Super Bowl record with 11 receptions. Then, after one more season, he was gone, traded during a contract dispute after the opening game of the 2006 season to Seattle for a draft choice. Brady was devastated to lose his friend and the receiver who could adjust his planned route with just a pre-snap glance from his quarterback. Then he felt much better when Branch made the cross-country trip back for a reunion. The Patriots obtained Branch in a trade on Oct. 12, 2010 for a fourrth-round draft choice to replace Randy Moss, who was traded to Minnesota.dddddddddddd Branch had 48 catches in 11 games with New England last season and another 51 in 15 games this season. But Welker led the NFL with 122 receptions, Gronkowski set a league single-season record for tight ends with 17 touchdown catches and Hernandez, a tight end versatile enough to make big plays at wide receiver and running back, had 79 receptions. Welker has caught at least 111 passes in four of his five years with the Patriots. Gronkowski and Hernandez, fun-loving second-year pros, are revolutionizing the tight end position historically known for players who block well and occasionally break away for long gains. Branch, simply, just produces in the shadows of those stars. "Its easy to overlook a guy like him in their offence because theyre so tight-end focused and those are the guys who are scoring touchdowns," Giants linebacker Matthias Kiwanuka said, "but he obviously creates matchup problems. If you want to assign your best corner to a Wes Welker or somebody else, or you want to put your safety down on a tight end, then (Branch) is going to create an issue for you, but we have the personnel to get it done." Branch is a solid blocker for his size and a precise route runner who can adjust on the fly. And he can make the big play. In a 45-10 divisional playoff win over Denver, he caught a 61-yard touchdown pass. "I dont know how many guys make that play for us," Belichick said. Its the kind of play the Giants will try to prevent. "People who actually play against him, they understand how good Deion is," New York safety Antrel Rolle said. "Deion is a veteran of this league. He understands all the tricks to this game and, most of all, hes great for their system. He fits their system extremely well. So I think Deion definitely gets his due, maybe not in the media or in the press, but within this team as an organization I feel he definitely gets his due." Patriots defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said a players contribution in each game depends on what offensive or defensive packages a team uses. It could emphasize the tight ends or Welker or even the running game. And, on Sunday, maybe even Branch. "You never know," Wilfork said. "He might have another MVP game." ' ' '

MIAMI -- Carlos Gomez added another impressive offensive performance during his breakout season. Gomez had four hits, including two triples, drove in three runs, and scored three runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-1 win over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday. "He had a very big night, two triples," said Jonathan Lucroy, who drove in four runs. "Anytime you have a guy with that kind of speed and a ballpark this big, things like that are going to happen. He did very well for us tonight and a big part of the win." Gomez, a .247 hitter coming into the season, raised his batting average to .326 on the year with 11 home runs, eight triples, and 36 RBIs in 63 games. "He has put together quite a season so far," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "I had to move him into the third spot with (Ryan) Braun out and he just continues to have good at-bats. Hell get down two strikes and next thing I know hes going the other way, which is what the good hitters do. Hes been impressive." It was the eighth four-hit game in Gomezs career. Gomez had two unimpressive stints with the Mets and Twins before landing in Milwaukee in 2010. "He has learned a lot," Roenicke said. "Hes smarter, his approach is better so its playing more, but its also he has a better idea of what hes doing at the plate." His biggest play of the game came in the sixth. With the Brewers already leading 6-0, Gomez smacked a three-run triple, his third of the series, off Edgar Olmos to score three runs and scored on the play as Derek Dietrichs errant relay throw ended up in the stands. "I saw bases were loaded and tried to put contact on, I knew that guy threw really hard," Gomez said. "I was looking for something middle-away, put good contact on it, and I hit a triple." Jean Segura homered for the Brewers, who have won five of six. "The last week and a half weve been playing really good," Gomez said. "The starting pitching has been awesome. Youre more pumped up when you see the starting pitching be more consistent." Alfredo Figaro (1-0) pitched seven scoreless innings to earn his first victory since Sept. 26, 2009, at the Chicago White Sox. He retired 16 in a row at one point and struck out four. "That was the first win in a while even in Japan, no wins (in a while), so Im glad that I got the win and helped the team too," Figaro said. Both Gomez and Lucroy had bases-clearing triples as the two combined to go 12 for 24 with 12 RBIs in the three-game series. "Give those guys some credit, theyre swinging the bats good and thats a potent lineup right now thats got a lot of guys swinging the bat really well," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. It was the largest margin of victory for the Brewers this season. Miami starter Kevin Slowey (2-6) allowed six runs -- five earned -- and nine hits in five innings. He was on three days rest after he pitched seven scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory in Saturdays 2-1, 20-inning win over the Mets. "Todays game had less to do with rest and more to do with me executing pitches," Slowey said. Slowey is 0-4 with an 8.89 ERA in his past six starts. Lucroy gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the first with his three-run triple to right-centre as the ball rolled to the wall. Segura hit his 10th home run of the season in the third for a 4-0 advantage. Norichika Aoki and Lucroy added sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth to push the lead to 6-0. Ed Lucas had two of Miamis five hits and Giancarlo Stanton drove in the Marlins only run in the ninth.
