When the final whistle blew on Toronto FCs season against the Montreal Impact on Saturday, the ball came down from the night sky and, fittingly, landed on the head of head coach Ryan Nelsen. The former central defender calmly nodded it down and quietly went about celebrating a win with his staff. For a man who has had a lot on his shoulders this season, it was an appropriate moment. The rookie head coach now fully admits that he underestimated the task he took on when he came to Toronto after retiring as a player from QPR in the Premier League in January. He inherited a side in shambles on and off the pitch. He went on to use 35 different players in 34 league games and watch the GM who brought him to the club get fired, yet as season number seven for the franchise officially finishes, Nelsen has never been happier as a head coach. In a sit-down interview with TSN.ca on Monday, he talked about how he sleeps a lot better now, believing the team is heading in the right direction. He rolls his eyes thinking back to the state the team was in "salary cap [shape] and competitively" when he took over, but there is no anger or frustration in his voice. Nelsen is not an easy man to shake away from calmness; his voice rarely changes its pitch as he talks about the highs and lows of his first year in charge. It is only when I ask him about Christchurch, his beloved home city in New Zealand, ravaged by an earthquake back in 2011, does his expression change as his mind reflects on a scary moment for his family. "They were right in the middle of it. I felt completely helpless. During the earthquake, my sister went into labour – she has a brittle bone disease, so if she doesnt have a c-section shes going to die, so she is in labour, all cell phone communication is gone, the emergency services are all occupied and nobody could get hold of her. I get hold of my parents, they dont know if she made it, so it was about a five, six, seven-hour period where we didnt know if she was okay. Thankfully, eventually, everything worked out good." The 36-year-old openly says he is forever thinking about the club, but as a man it is clear he never gets to the point of worry that he did that day. "Thats real world stress," he admitted and remains saddened by what happened back home. "Since then I have gone back and half the city is completely destroyed. Its a beautiful little city. It takes the soul out of it, but the last time I went back was the first time I saw a real sign of recovery. I cant wait to go back for Christmas to see the rebuild." The subject turns to Major League Soccer and its complicated rules. Nelsen admits they are difficult to understand and shows small signs of frustration when talking about them as he slips back into his laidback delivery after the Christchurch chat. "Some of the rules are incredibly frustrating, when you are a club that has the resources that we have, you get held back," he said. "Its communism, really, trying to make everyone even when we are a democracy and we are like Canada, very progressive, but we get held back by the league rules designed for parity. Some of them are just incredible. I still dont believe some of them, but thats the world we live in and its done with the best intentions for the league." Staying in his calm and collected mode, he talks about "learning over a thousand different things" since he arrived on the job and close to the top of that list is how to, and how not to, lead a club going forward. "I think I have learned more about the organization than anything. If certain things arent right, its amazing how it trickles down and makes it very hard to move in the right direction," the coach explained. "Decisions were being made before I came back that people didnt know about. It caused a mess, but the year has been about clearing up mistakes. Its not the players fault. Its on the administration and I underestimated how debilitating that is towards a team - really underestimated it." Having played under big name managers such as Mark Hughes, Paul Ince and Sam Allardyce, it is the current West Ham manager, Allardyce, who Nelsen singles out as giving him the best piece of advice. "I have learned that the club has to come 100 per cent before anything else," said Nelsen. "I know that might frustrate the fans and media, who arent in the epicentre of it, but you have to keep doing what is best for the club and cannot appease certain areas. Thats what I have stuck to all season." Part of those on the end of that have been high-priced players such as Stefan Frei, Richard Eckersley and Danny Koevermans, three big personalities, rarely playing, who didnt hide their feelings on Monday when talking about Nelsen and a lack of communication towards them. Nelsen said his door is always open, something backed up by players such as Steven Caldwell and Robert Earnshaw, and, still remaining in his calm manner, seemed disappointed that the trio ended their time in such a manner. "Its ironic that theyre the guys that havent played much," explained Nelsen. "They will complain, but I mean, wow. One is on [a] $1.6 mill.[deal.] To me, they should be really happy for what Toronto has provided them." Those departing open doors for new players, which include potential star Designated Players, Nelsen switches gears and talks about how essential it is to find lower-salaried players who will consistently outperform their contracts, something Toronto FC have struggled to find since it began. "I cannot stress how important that is," said Nelsen. "Its so key - its the foundation. DPs are the icing on the cake. Its like putting a Picasso in a dump of a house. It makes no sense. You need a good house before you think of that. If you asked me in June about DPs, I said we wouldnt be ready. We didnt have the foundation to handle it." Now, things have changed, the coach says. "We have enough players now [who] are starting to get hardened that know the league. We are in a salary cap and allocation situation where we could handle it. If you ask me, if Messi and Ronaldo are coming, can we handle it? I would say yes." Messi and Ronaldo still dont raise his tone, so I tried one more attempt by dropping another name. "You played with Jermain Defoe, would he make a good DP in this league?" I asked. "Thats not a serious question, is it?" he responded. Before I explained how I wanted him to tell me how good Defoe is, Nelsen interrupted with his eyes wide open. Now he was as passionate as the All Blacks doing the Haka. "Jermain Defoe in this league? Look what Di Vaio has done! My goodness - incredible player," Nelsen raved. "One of the most natural goal-scorers I have ever come across. Always out training, always trying to score, a great guy. To get a guy like Defoe for the MLS, I cannot think of many that are more suited. I think if you ask most Premier League teams, they would take Defoe." He pauses, as if he imagines Defoe one day playing for him. "It would be incredible. I call him and text him all the time," he said. "Him playing in Toronto would be phenomenal. If you look around the world and try and think of a realistic player – and I am not sure how realistic he is - that complements a league like ours, never gets injured, doesnt drink, can play high, low, scores all sorts of goals – do you know something I dont? Can you go over and sell it to him?" Through comedy, Nelsen refuses to tip his hand one way or another on whether Defoe was one of the players the club spoke to on a recent trip to London, but now that the club is ready for star designated players, I propose a scenario to him that could see Defoe or another target not arriving until next August, once the World Cup is over. It is not one that Nelsen is too comfortable with. "We want them in as soon as possible," Nelsen explained. "If we have to pick [from] A and B and A is coming in January and B is coming in August, its January. [TFC would take] a good DP thats going to score x amount of goals over a great DP who will come in August. Look, the team wants to get to the playoffs." And what if such a January signing would go to Brazil 2014? Nelsen doesnt see a problem. "Look, if we have World Cup stars, just missing for a few weeks, that would be pretty good!" Calmness restored. Spend some time with Nelsen and its not difficult to see why he sleeps well at night. Tonight, it is quite possible that hell be dreaming of a Tottenham striker playing for him in the near future. http://www.nikesapatosvendaportugal.com/Nike-Free-5-0+-mf-46.html. Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Ryan Kesler scored twice to help the Vancouver Canucks take a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild at Rogers Arena. Daniel Sedin and Raffi Torres each had a goal for the Canucks, who have won their past six games. Roberto Luongo made 33 saves in the win. Vancouver sits atop the NHL standings with 101 points. It is the third straight season the team has eclipsed the century mark in points. Mikko Koivu and Andrew Brunette both had goals for the Wild, who are 0-3-0 on a four-game road trip that wraps up in San Jose on Thursday. Niklas Backstrom stopped 18-of-21 shots in the loss. It wasnt a good start for us or Backstrom, said Minnesota head coach Todd Richards. He had a rough first period, but then he held down the fort and gave us a chance to come back. Minnesota is on the outside looking in as the team is four points back of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with 12 games to play. Vancouver held a 3-1 heading to the third, but Koivu made it a one-goal game when he backhanded the puck past Luongo from in front at the 4:32 mark. A high sticking call to Kesler with 2:10 to play saw Minnesota take a man advantage and the team got Backstrom out of the net for the extra attacker, but Kesler sealed the win with the empty-netter in the final moments. We got the three goals and we knew they were going to push, said Luongo. Theyre a desperate club over there and we were able to weather the storm. Vancouver scored three times in the first period to take the lead. The first goal came off the stick of Torres just 1:59 into the game. Sedin made it a 2-0 game on the power play when he walked down to the left circle and snapped a wrister past Backstrom at the 8:28 mark. Vancouver then took a 3-0 lead with another power-play goal as Kesler backhanded home a rebound off a Manny Malhotra one-timer with 5:28 to play in the frame. Minnesota got a goal back with 2:57 to play in the second as Brunette chipped the puck in from the low right side for his 17th goal of the season. NEW YORK -- St. Louis Blues forward Maxim Lapierre was suspended for five games without pay by the NHL on Friday for boarding San Jose Sharks defenceman Dan Boyle on Tuesday night. Lapierre was assessed a major penalty for checking from behind and a game misconduct in the first period of the Blues 6-2 home loss. NEW YORK -- Bud Selig took over a sport with $1.7 billion in revenue, four teams in each years post-season, economic disparity among the clubs and a fixation on sticking with traditions that dated to the 19th century. After a decade of maintaining his departure was imminent, the 79-year-old baseball commissioner put his exit plans in writing Thursday and said in a statement he will retire in January 2015 after 22 years -- the second-longest term behind Kenesaw Mountain Landis. His revolutionary reign produced an $8 billion industry, interleague play, an expanded post-season and two decades of labour peace. But, he also presided over a cancelled World Series and long-running drug scandal. "Hes been the voice of baseball. Some people liked his voice. Some people didnt," Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "I have a lot of respect for the guy." Selig has been a bit of the Boy Who Cried Wolf in the past when it came to his retirement. He said in 2003 that he would step down at the end of 2006 but has repeatedly accepted new contracts. Some owners -- even his wife -- had been skeptical in the past that he really would quit, but this marked the first time he issued a formal statement that he will give up the sports top job. He even gave an exact date: Jan. 24, 2015. "I look forward to continuing its extraordinary growth and addressing several significant issues during the remainder of my term," he said. Seligs length of service and impact on his sport matches those of Pete Rozelle, the NFL commissioner from 1960-89, and David Stern, who is stepping down in February after 30 years as NBA commissioner. Selig said he will soon announce a transition plan that will include a reorganization of central baseball management. Rob Manfred, baseballs chief labour negotiator, has gained increased influence in recent years, but its not clear whether Seligs successor will come from within the commissioners office. Many had speculated Selig wanted to surpass the term of Landis, who served from November 1920 to November 1944. Perhaps the biggest mark on Seligs tenure was the prevalence of performance-enhancing drugs. Management didnt have a drug agreement with its players from October 1985 until August 2002, and drug testing with penalties didnt start until 2004. Selig has repeatedly defended his record, saying baseball acted as fast as it could in a matter that was subject to bargaining with players. "The game has grown under him tremendously. Hes made every effort to try to clean the game up," New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Hes left his mark on the game. Theres no doubt about it." Seligs tenure also included splitting each league into three divisions instead of two in 1995, when wild cards and an additional round of playoffs were added. Wild cards doubled to four last year, when the post-season stretched to four rounds. Expansion teams in Arizona and Tampa Bay started play in 1998, raising the major league total to 30. Interleague play began in 1997 along with revenue sharing, which allowed the smaller-market clubs a better chance to compete. Jackie Robinsons No. 42 was retired by Selig for all of MLB that same year, and other initiatives followed. Major League Baseball Advanced Media launched in 2000, the World Baseball Classic in 2006, limited video review of umpires calls in 2008 and the Major League Baseball Network in 2009.dddddddddddd Owners have repeatedly praised his financial stewardship, which has led to record franchise values as shown by the $2 billion sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers last year. The average player salary has tripled under his tenure to more than $3 million. Seligs critics said he moved cautiously -- a characterization even he sometimes agreed with. Running baseball from his longtime home in Milwaukee, he worked to build consensus rather than dictate to owners in the manner of Peter Ueberroth. Selig used a grandfatherly charm to get what he wanted. "Everythings been a success overall," Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "Youre going to have your detractors, that goes without saying." Selig became a baseball fan when his mother took him to games as a child. Working in the family auto-leasing business, he became a minority investor in the Milwaukee Braves and tried to stop the teams move to Atlanta for the 1966 season. As a stopgap measure, he arranged for the Chicago White Sox to play nine regular-season games at Milwaukee in 1968 and 11 the following year. Just before the 1970 season, he bought the Seattle Pilots in bankruptcy court, moved the franchise to Milwaukee and renamed it the Brewers. Mentored by Detroit Tigers owner John Fetzer, Selig became a leading owner by the early 1980s in his role as chairman of the Player Relations Committee, which determined labour policy. He was part of the group that wanted major changes in the sports lab contract with players and forced the resignation of Fay Vincent, who had been in office for three years. Selig took over as acting commissioner on Sept. 9, 1992, in his role as chairman of the executive council. While he presided over a 7 1/2-month strike in 1994-95 that led to the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years, following eight straight work stoppages owners and players reached agreements without interruption in 2002, 2006 and 2011. Although Selig repeatedly said he would not take the job full time, he was formally elected commissioner July 9, 1998. He turned running the Brewers over to daughter Wendy Selig-Prieb, but the Selig family did not sell the franchise until 2005. Selig agreed to a new contract as commissioner in 2001. He first announced his planned retirement in 2003, telling a group from Associated Press Sports Editors he would leave in 2006. "For a guy who took it in Sept. 9, 1992, and I told my wife it was two-to-four months -- 14 years later ... I think that will be enough. Theres no question, because there are other things I really would like to do." Asked again if this was his final term, Selig responded; "Oh, theres no question." He then agreed to new contracts in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Selig has said he wants to write a book. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin and Marquettes law school. "We look forward to working with the commissioner over the next 15 months," union head Michael Weiner said in a statement. "Then, we hope the commissioner enjoys his retirement and wish him well." ARDMORE, Pa. -- For all those runner-up finishes, with so much heartache chasing the major he covets, Phil Mickelson has never had a better chance to win the U.S. Open. Its the first time he has ever had the outright lead going into the final round. Of the nine players within five shots, only one has the experience of winning a major. And Tiger Woods went from contender to middle-of-the-pack by matching his worst U.S. Open score as a pro. Despite a bogey on the final hole at Merion -- the 18th was so tough it didnt yield a single birdie in the third round -- Mickelson was the sole survivor to par Saturday with an even-par 70 that gave him a one-shot lead over Hunter Mahan, Steve Stricker and former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel. Mickelson celebrates his 43rd birthday Sunday -- on Fathers Day, no less. He left Merion on Monday and didnt return until three hours before his tee time on Thursday so he could attend the eighth-grade graduation of his oldest daughter. "Its got the makings to be something special," Mickelson said. "But I still have to go out and perform, and play some of my best golf." He has been good enough to play 54 holes in 1-under 209. And he was close to perfection when he stood on the par-3 17th hole with a 4-iron in his hand, 253 yards away from the orange wicker basket attached to the pin, the signature look at Merion. He was one shot behind Luke Donald until a pure swing and an 8-foot birdie putt gave him the lead. "I just stood and admired it," Mickelson said. "It was one of the best shots Ive ever hit. I mean, it just was right down the centre of the green and I was hoping it would kind of get the right bounces. It left me a beautiful uphill putt that I could be aggressive with and I made it. That was fun to do that because thats just not a hole you expect to get one back." Four others players who had been under par late in the round couldnt hang on. Donald twice made poor swings with a 2-iron, and it cost him three shots. Mahan, Schwartzel and Justin Rose all finished bogey-bogey. There was trouble everywhere at Merion, and it didnt take much to find it. One swing cost Ian Poulter, who drove out-of-bounds on the 15th. One decision cost Nicolas Colsaerts, who tried to hit a shot under a tree on the 18th and made triple bogey. That left Mickelson alone at the top for only the second time in a major -- he won the 2006 Masters with the lead. The U.S. Open, however, has been nothing but trouble for Lefty. "I dont think I feel any more pressure than anybody else who wants to win ... the U.S. Open," Mickelson said. "This is a tournament for years Ive had opportunities, Ive come close to, and it would mean a lot tomorrow if I could play some of my best golf -- certainly if I can play the way I have been." Saturday was more about weeding out the pretenders for this U.S. Open -- and one of them turned out to be Woods. He started out just four shots out of the lead, and made a bending, 12-foot birdie putt on the opening hole. It never got any better for the worlds No. 1 player. He made seven bogeys the rest of the way and didnt add another birdie. It was the fourth time he shot 76 in the U.S. Open, but never when he started out so close to the lead. Now, hes 10 shots behind. "It certainly is frustrating," said Woods, who has been stuck on 14 majors since winning the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. "Im playing well enough to do it, and unfortunately just havent gotten it done." David Hearn (73) of Brantford, Ont., is at 10 over, while Mike Weir (75) of Brights Grove, Ont., is 13 over. The final hour might have been a sneak preview for Sunday. At one point, there were five players under par, and suddenly there was only Mickelson. Donald made double bogey on the 18th hole from the middle of the fairway, trying to swing too hard on a 2-iron to get up the hill and beyond the false front of the green. He wound up in ankle-deep rough, so gnarly that his third shot squirted across the green and into more thick grass. "I should have done better," Donald said. "It was disappointing, but Ill take the positives out of today -- a really solid 16 holes of golf, and Im only two back." Mahan let his spectacular back nine filled with four birdies go to waste with a bogey-bogey finish for a 69. He will be in the final group for the first time in a major with Mickelson, whom he considers a close friend. "Its going to be a very, very exciting finish," Mahan said, "because I dont think any lead is safe." Stricker made a 10-foot par putt on the 18th hole to complete a 70 and perhaps the steadiest round of the day. His only mistake in a round that lasted 5 1/2 hours under sunshine was a tee shot into the water on the par-3 ninth for a double bogey. At 46, Stricker can become the oldest U.S. Open champion. "Ive got to play smart golf ... not make any mistakes," he said. "I think thats the biggest thing. And its a course where its tough to come back." Billy Horschel, tied with Mickelson at the start of the third round, kept his emotions in check and shot 72. He was two shots behind, along with Donald and Rose The third round featured so much movement, and so many wild swings, that seven players had a share of the lead at some point. Even though USGA executive director Mike Davis said the course was set up to allow for good scores, this was more about hanging on for dear life. There was no faking it Saturday afternoon. Thirty players were separated by only five shots at the start of the third round. By the end of the day, there were just 10 players separated by five shots, including amateur Michael Kim. He was tied for third until losing four shots on the last three holes. For all the talk about Merion being just a short course, the final two holes were beastly -- 253 yards for a par 3 surrounded by deep bunkers and framed by the Scottish broom grass, and then a 530-yard closing hole up the hill, deep rough on both sides with bogeys or worse waiting for a single missed shot. Stricker, remarkably, played bogey-free on the back nine. Horschel, striving for perfection at a championship that doesnt allow for it, dropped only one shot. "Seventeen and 18, youve got to buckle up and hit good shots," Horschel said. "So I think tomorrow, with the pressure being on, those holes will stick out even more." Mickelson chose not to carry a driver, and he had to be flawless again on the long closing hole. He swung the 3-wood with confidence throughout the back nine and drilled another. With some 250 yards left, another fairway metal took him just over the green. His chip came out some 10 feet short and he missed the par putt to end a streak of 12 holes without a bogey. But he still had the lead. It was the first time only one player remained under par through 54 holes at the U.S. Open since 2007 at Oakmont, when there was none. Mickelson was tied for the 54-hole lead at Winged Foot in 2006, where he lost a one-shot lead on the final hole by making double bogey. Of his five runner-up finishes, that one stung the most. But hes back for another try to win his national championship. The challenge has never been more severe -- not from any player, but from Merion. Mickelson has one piece of history working against him. In the four previous U.S. Opens at this classic course, no one with the lead going into the final round has ever gone on to win. "I love being in the thick of it," Mickelson said. "Ive had opportunities in years past, and it has been so fun, even though its been heart-breaking to come so close a number of times and let it slide. But I feel better equipped than I have ever felt heading into the final round of a U.S. Open." http://www.pascherreductionsnike.com/Nike-Free-ij-65_Nike-Free-3-0-Amphibious-kb-84.html. NEW ORLEANS -- It didnt take Chris Williams long to land in the NFL. The wide receiver, who negotiated his release from the CFLs Hamilton Tiger Cats this week, has signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints, his agent said Thursday. Dan Vertlieb, Williams Vancouver-based agent, told The Canadian Press that Williams is headed to New Orleans. On Wednesday, Williams and the Ticats reached an agreement to allow CFLs top special-teams player last year to pursue opportunities in the NFL. Contract details werent immediately available, but the 25-year-old Williams stands to make much more than the $48,000 base salary he was scheduled to earn this season in Hamilton. The NFLs 2013 minimum salary is $405,000. Under terms of the deal with Hamilton, should Williams return to the CFL either this season or next, it must be with the Ticats. However, given that Williams received multiple NFL offers moments after being free to entertain them, its doubtful hell be back in Canada anytime soon. Neither the Ticats nor the CFL commented on the deal with the Saints on Thursday. Williams, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, went to arbitration to be released from the final year of his deal with Hamilton to pursue NFL offers. In June, arbitrator E.E. Palmer ruled the Ticats violated the CFLs collective bargaining agreement with the CFL Players Association by negotiating with an unregistered agent. However, Palmer said the penalty for that was a fine, not the termination of the contract. The Ticats werent fined because the CFLPA didnt ask that one be imposed. Williams signed a deal with Hamilton in 2011 that was negotiated by an agent not registered with the CFLPA. He contended he wasnt made fully aware of the conditions pertaining to his rookie contract and that Hamilton didnt offer him the one-year plus an option deal, but rather just the two-year plus an option. Its doubtful Williams will immediately crack New Orleans strong active roster. The Saints (4-0) are deep at receiver and tight end, and boast one of the NFLs top kick returners in Darren Sproles. Lupul will be out of the lineup for an estimated three to four weeks with a separated shoulder and Armstrong is listed as day-to-day with a broken nose. John-Michael Liles and Phil Kessel both scored on the power play for Toronto, which fell to 0-5 against the Bruins this season and trail the Jets by five points for the eighth spot in the East. Jonas Gustavsson allowed five goals on 33 shots in defeat. "Youve got enough goals to win the hockey game," said Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle. "Its the defensive aspect of it that needs to be improved upon." Playing one day after signing a five-year, $27.5 million extension, Mikhail Grabovski scored his 21st goal of the season to cut the deficit to one with 6:47 to play. He has three goals and six points over his past four games. Grabovski is also Torontos leading scorer versus Pittsburgh this season with three goals and three assists in the three meetings. The recent clearing of Sidney Crosby for contact has the Penguins hopeful that their captain can return this season. In the meantime, theyll continue to lean on star forward Evgeni Malkin. Crosby has been limited to just eight games of action since suffering a concussion in January of 2010. He made a brief return in late November before again experiencing concussion symptoms. The center was also diagnosed with a soft tissue injury in his neck this past January, but resumed skating with the team in February. He was cleared for contact on Tuesday. "Well see how tthat goes.dddddddddddd There is no real timetable, but its a good step. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum and get out there soon," said Crosby. Despite missing Crosby for most of the season, the Penguins sit fourth in the Eastern Conference with 83 points. That is two up on the fifth-place Flyers and eight back of the Eastern-leading Rangers. Malkin has been a big reason the Pens have remained successful. The sniper is tied with Tampa Bays Steven Stamkos for the NHL lead with 81 points while logging six goals and six assists over his current eight-game point streak. Malkin is one point shy of 500 for his career after logging an assist in Mondays 2-1 win over Phoenix. Just as instrumental to Pittsburghs success is goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who made 36 saves to log his 35th victory of the season. That is one behind Nashvilles Pekka Rinne for the most in the league. "They came at us hard and he made so many unbelievable saves that we never thought he could keep it going," said defenseman Zbynek Michalek about Fleury. "But he did and hes the main reason why we won." Michalek and Chris Kunitz had the goals on Monday as Pittsburgh won its sixth straight game. The club is 18-4-1 over its past 23 games, a run that began with a season-high eight-game win streak from Jan. 13-31. Pittsburgh also won its fourth straight at home and improved to 10-1 in its past 11 as the host. It plays the second of a four-game residency this evening. The Penguins are likely to get more production from Malkin tonight given the opponent. The former Art Ross and Conn Smythe Trophy winner has nine goals and 29 assists in 19 career games versus the Maple Leafs, picking up at least one point in 17 of those contests. He helped Pittsburgh rally from deficits of 2-0 and 4-1 in the previous meeting at Pittsburgh on Jan. 31, forcing overtime with 6.6 seconds left in the third with a goal before netting the game-winner in the shootout. Toronto did bounce back the following night to record a 1-0 victory at home, getting 25 saves from James Reimer to halt Pittsburghs longest win streak of the season. ' ' '

SAN FRANCISCO -- The NFL on Tuesday said there were no illegal hits by the Super Bowl-bound New York Giants on 49ers return man Kyle Williams during the NFC championship game. Williams fumbled a punt in overtime of San Franciscos 20-17 loss Sunday, and the misplay set up Lawrence Tynes winning field goal. Afterward, New Yorks Jacquian Williams and Devin Thomas indicated they were trying to hit Williams given his history of concussions, including the most recent one sustained Dec. 24 at Seattle that kept him out of the regular-season finale at St. Louis. League spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email that the Giants did nothing against the rules. "Players are held accountable for their actions on the field. There were no illegal hits to the head or neck area against Kyle Williams on Sunday," Aiello said. "There was no conduct by the Giants of any kind that would suggest an effort to injure Kyle Williams in any way." Williams agent, Ken Sarnoff, said the second-year pro is aware of the Giants postgame comments but is done speaking publicly and is ready to move forward toward the 2012 season. The 49ers had no comment Tuesday. Jacquian Williams forced Kyle Williams second fumble of the game. The fill-in return man was playing in place of injured regular Ted Ginn Jr. "The thing is, we knew he had four concussions, so that was our biggest thing, was to take him outta the game," Jacquian Williams told reporters at Candlestick Park. Thomas recovered both fumbles, including one in the fourth quarter that went under review to reveal the ball glanced off Williams right knee. Williams still insists the ball didnt hit him. "Hes had a lot of concussions," Thomas told the Newark Star-Ledger. "We were just like, We gotta put a hit on that guy." http://www.themichaelkorshandbagsoutlet.com/. With the results, North America claimed 2.5 of the three available points, opening up a 17.5-12.5 lead in the overall standings. But you would never have known it, as the three-time world champion from Toronto landed two huge quad jumps en route to claiming his fourth Skate Canada International title. "I was nervous, honestly," Chan said. "I started having the (negative) feelings I had last season. . . It was really challenging even before I got on the ice to stay positive, and remember the things that I wanted to repeat that I had in the short program -- looking forward to going out there, to look forward to doing the quad, but not looking too far ahead, doing one quad at a time and then moving on." Chan scored 262.03 points, bringing the Harbour Station crowd -- dotted with dozens of Canadian flags -- to its feet with his new program debut to Antonio Vivaldis "Four Seasons." Yuzuru Hanyu won the silver with 234.8, while Japanese teammate Nobunari Oda claimed the bronze (233.dddddddddddd0). The 22-year-old Chan was plagued by negative feelings last season, and it showed in his shaky performances. He managed to pull out his third world victory in March, a couple of weeks after he unexpectedly moved from Colorado Springs to Detroit, saying he hadnt been happy in Colorado. As the worlds most dominant skater for three seasons, hes easily the man to beat in Sochi. He boasts the physical tools to take him to the top of the podium, but says this season is all about the mental game. "Its not about physically being prepared but mostly being mentally prepared, because I think thats the only thing that held me back (last season)," Chan said. "When I think of being aggressive and being really focused, I get too serious and I start to stress too much, and think of the little things." Neither Hanyu nor Oda landed clean quads Saturday night, Hanyu falling on his quad Salchow, then putting a hand down on a quad toe loop, and Oda tripling both his quad attempts. ' ' '

HAVANA, Cuba -- Could a new wave of Cuban baseball players be headed for the major leagues without having to defect from the communist island? Cuba announced Friday that athletes from all sports will soon be able to sign contracts with foreign leagues, a break with a decades-old policy that held pro sports to be anathema to socialist ideals. Its a step toward the day when the road from Havana to Yankee Stadium might mean simply hopping on a plane rather than attempting a perilous sea crossing or sneaking out of a hotel at midnight in a strange land. But American baseball fans shouldnt throw their Dodgers or Rockies caps in the air in celebration just yet. The Cold War-era embargo against Cuba means it may not happen anytime soon. If it does come to pass, it could increase -- astronomically, in some cases -- the amount of money Cuban baseball players can earn. Athletes wages are not made public in Cuba but are believed to be somewhere around the $20 a month that most other state employees earn -- a tiny fraction of the millions many U.S. big leaguers make. "Its the dream of many athletes to test themselves in other leagues -- the big leagues, if at some point my country would allow it," said Yasmani Tomas, who is one of Cubas top talents, batting .345 last season with the powerhouse Havana Industriales. Under the new policy, athletes will be eligible to play abroad as long as they fulfil their commitments at home, the Communist Party newspaper Granma reported. For baseball players, that means being available for international competitions as well as Cubas November-to-April league. "We have seen the press reports. This is an internal Cuban matter," Deputy State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said. "Generally speaking, the United States welcomes any reforms that allow Cubans to depart from and return to their country." Major League Baseball said the impact of Fridays announcement cant be predicted. "Given that we do not have any details of this change in policy, it would be premature for us to speculate what effect it may have," the commissioners office said in a statement. "There are no provisions in the major league rules or bylaws that make it more difficult for Cuban ballplayers to play Major League Baseball, but MLB and its clubs have and will continue to act in accordance with the laws and policies of the United States government." President Raul Castros government hopes the move will stem defections by athletes who are lured abroad by the possibility of lucrative contracts, a practice that saps talent from Cubas teams. "I think this could help stop the desertions a little bit," said Yulieski Gourriel, a talented 29-year-old third baseman who batted .314 last year for Sancti Spiritus. "I dont even want to talk about how much Ive been offered, because every time we leave the country, there are these offers. Ive never paid attention because Ive always said Im not interested." A number of his countrymen, however, are interested. Cuban defectors now in the major leagues include outfielder Yasiel Puig, who signed a $42 million, seven-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2012 and had a sensational rookie season, helping Los Angeles win its division. Hard-throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman signed a $30.25 million, six-year deal with Cincinnati before the 2010 season. If the policy change comes to pass, "its good for Cuba, for everybody, for the players -- more people in the big leagues, more experience for international tournaments," said Milwaukee Brewers infielder Yuniesky Betancourt, a Cuban defector who left his homeland aboard a speedboat in 2003. Texas Rangers outfielder Leoyns Martin was surprised Friday when told about the news "Really? Oh my gosh," said Martin, wearing his Cuba Baseball jacket from the 2009 World Baseball Classic. Martin defected after playing for Cubas national team in a 2010 tournament in Japan. "I dont want to talk about that," Martin said. "Thats a long history in my life." Professional sports were essentially done away with under Fidel Castro in 1961, two years after the Cuban revolution, and athletes became state employees just like factory workers and farmhands. Sport as private enterprise was deemed incompatible with the Marxist society Castro intended to create. In 2005, he railed against the "parasites that feed off the athletes hard work" in professional sports. Fridays announcement is part of a trend toward relaxing that stance under Castros brother, who became president in 2006. Earlier this year, Cuba ended a five-decade ban on professional boxing, joining an international semipro league where fighters compete for sponsored teams and earn $1,000 to $3,000 a month. Still, the biggest obstacle to, say, Tomas likeness showing up on a bobblehead doll in a major league park someday may lie not in Cuba, but in the U.S. Granma reported that Cuban athletes will have to pay taxes on any earnings from foreign clubs, an apparent conflict with the 51-year-old American embargo that outlaws nearly all U.S. transactions with Cuba unless they are specifically licensed by Washington. The economic restrictions were imposed after Cuba nationalized American businesses and aligned itself with the Soviet Union. They have been kept in place to try to pressure the authoritarian country to allow its people more freedom. "Our policy has not changed. Cuban players need to be unblocked by a license from the Office of Foreign Assets Control in order to play for the MLB," said John Sullivan, spokesman for the U.S. Treasury Departments Office of Foreign Assets Control. "In order to qualify, the players must prove that they have permanent residency outside of Cuba." Cuban players who defect establish residency in another country and become free agents, eligible for any major league organization to sign. While residents of the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada are the only ones currently subject to baseballs amateur draft, MLB management hopes to start an international draft in the next labour contract, which would start in 2017. In the interim, MLB and the union last year started a system of restraints on signing bonuses for international players. "The Basic Agreement is unclear as to whether theyd be subject to the international signing limits," said Jay Reisinger, an agent and lawyer for several major leaguers. Even if Cubans have trouble playing in the U.S., they might still be able to take the field in Mexico, Japan, Venezuela or other countries during their off-season, something that has happened in a few instances. Also Friday, Granma announced raises for island athletes, including bonuses for individual and team achievement. For example, in baseball, league leaders in hitting and other categories will get an extra $41. The team that wins the title will split $2,700. Thats small change by big-league standards, but sizeable in Cuba. "The pay raise is going to be a big help. It was time," Tomas said. "I think if wed done it even earlier, some athletes would not have left." http://www.themichaelkorshandbagsoutlet.com/michael-kors-hobo-outlet/. ST. LOUIS -- Kevin Shattenkirk didnt know if the puck was tipped or not. The defenceman didnt care much, either. The bottom line for Shattenkirk and the Blues was that his shot helped them win a hockey game. Shattenkirks first goal of the season midway through the third period sent St. Louis to a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night. Shattenkirks wrist shot from the right point got through traffic at 10:52 of the third period. Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury got a piece of the puck but it trickled into the net to break a 1-all tie. "It was a great play," said Shattenkirk, who extended his point streak to eight games. "Our forwards did a great job keeping the puck alive. Get a D-to-D pass from (Barret Jackman) and throw it to the net. "We still dont know" if the puck was tipped by Vladimir Tarasenko, who was screening Fleury. "We think someone might have tipped it, but for now, Ill take it." Ryan Reaves also scored for St. Louis and Jaroslav Halak stopped 19 shots as the Blues won for the 11th time in 15 games to start the season. Its the first time theyve done that since 2003-04, also the best start in franchise history. "I think Pittsburghs competitiveness made us play 60 minutes," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. "I thought we got stronger and stronger as the game went on. Our third period was our best. Our second was awfully good, too." It was St. Louis first regulation victory against the Penguins since a 4-1 win Dec. 19, 2006, in Pittsburgh. "I thought we played a really smart, strong, hard hockey game. Both teams competed at a very high level," Hitchcock said. "It was a playoff game and we scored the big goal in the third period, but we played a heck of a third period." Jussi Jokinen scored and Fleury made 30 saves for the Penguins, who have dropped two straight after a four-game winning streak. The 20 shots were a season low for Pittsburgh. "They are probably the best in the league playing this defensive-minded, checking game," Jokinen said of the Blues. "We still generated enough chances to score three or four goals, but we didnt bury those chances." Reaves scored the first goal of the game and the 11th of his career when he redirected Maxim Lapierres centring feed past Fleury 2:52 into the second period. "I dont think anyone really knew I was coming on the ice," Reaves said. "It was a late change. He had some good patience to see me backdoor and just a great paass.dddddddddddd" The Penguins were able to get the equalizer when Jokinen, parked in the slot, redirected Evgeni Malkins centring feed from the right circle 8:06 into the second. Roman Polak was serving an interference penalty for the Blues. "The game was almost as expected -- the tightness of the game and the matchups," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "There wasnt a lot out there." Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart gave the Blues their best scoring chances in the first period. Shattenkirks shot from the right circle was stopped by Fleury 5:33 into the game. Stewart missed on a backhand at the side of the Pittsburgh net after getting a pass from Patrik Berglund with 8:33 left in the first period. Halak was up to the task for the Blues in the first, stopping Chris Kunitzs one-time snap shot of Sidney Crosbys no-look pass with 10:17 remaining. Halak then had Crosby barrelling down on him from the left side after T.J Oshies turnover, but the Blues goalie made a save with his right arm as Crosby tried going high on the short side with 3:45 remaining in the opening period. Fleury preserved a 1-all tie by stopping Oshie with 16:15 remaining, then getting a shoulder on David Backes one-timer after Oshies feed with 10:45 to play. Fleury flashed his glove on Alexander Steens wrister with 5:14 left off a 2-on-1 to keep the Penguins within a goal at 2-1. But he lamented the fact that he didnt see Shattenkirks shot get through. "I dont know. Ive got to see it again," Fleury said. "Who got the goal? Was the guy in front? I want to see it again." The Blues dont care. All that mattered to them is that it went in. "Well see when we wake up tomorrow," Shattenkirk said. "Either way, it was a good effort there by everyone to open up that opportunity. I think the hard work that we had through the entire third period is what led to that goal." NOTES: The Blues are one of four teams that havent allowed a goal to Crosby in his career. The others are San Jose, Edmonton and Chicago. ... Blues D Jordan Leopold (hand) missed his first game of the season. Penguins D Paul Martin (undisclosed) also missed his first game with an injury. Penguins RW James Neal (upper body) returned after missing 15 games. RW Beau Bennett (lower body) returned after missing 11 games. ... The teams previous meeting was Jan. 24, 2012, a 3-2 shootout victory for the Penguins. ... Reaves and Penguins D Deryk Engelland fought 3 seconds into the game. ' ' '

ST. LOUIS -- Derek Roy needed less than 2 minutes to redeem himself Thursday night. After taking what he called a "stupid" penalty, the St. Louis centre scored a power-play goal to start a four-goal blitz that led the Blues to a 5-1 win over the struggling New York Islanders. St. Louis won for the sixth time in eight games. The Islanders have lost eight straight overall (0-6-2) and eight in a row on the road. David Backes, Jay Bouwmeester, Magnus Paajarvi and Brenden Morrow also scored for the Blues, who improved to 12-1-2 at home and tied Boston (12-3-2) for the most home wins in the NHL. Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves and upped his record to 15-4-2. Andrew MacDonald scored for the Islanders, who are 2-11-2 in their last 15 games. Roy took a tripping penalty that led to MacDonalds tying power-play goal at 5:19 of the second period. "I was pretty mad about the penalty," Roy said. "And they ended up scoring on it. When I got out of the box, I wanted to redeem myself -- and luckily I got the chance to." Roy pounced on the rebound of a shot from Kevin Shattenkirk to give the Blues a 2-1 lead at 7:02. "I think he felt better about himself," St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock said of Roy. "His goal seemed to energize us." Just more than 2 minutes later, Backes scored a power-play goal on a wrist shot from the top of the circle. Paajarvi increased the advantage to 4-1 with his second of the season, capping a three-goal burst in 7:57. "It was a huge period for us," Paajarvi said. "The whole team really came back to its game." St. Louis was 3 for 6 on the power play after managing one goal in its previous 10 chances. "The power-play goals really put us in a hole," New York centre John Tavares said. "Its the same thing again. (Were) just not good enough." St. Louis power play struggled in back-to-back losses to San Jose and Los Angeles, the teams first two-game regulation losing skid of the season. Shattenkirk, who assisted on two man-advantage goals Thursday, said the club made it a point to shore up the unit. "We just got back to simple things, getting pucks to the net and working on winning the battles," he said. "We got back to what we do best: shooting pucks and getting bodies out in front." New York goalie Anders Nilsson lost for the first time in regulation in his third start of the season. He made 21 saves. "We all know in the locker room that we have to step it up," Nilsson said. "Everybody has got to look in the mirror and see what you can do better." The Islanders, who are 3-10-0 on the road, have given up a league-high 27 power-play goals. "Its tough what were going through," Tavares said. "The only thing that is going to get us out of it is better execution." NOTES: The Blues are 11-0-1 when leading after the first period. ... Islanders G Evgeni Nabokov, who is out with a groin injury, practiced Wednesday and could rejoin the team in a week. ... New York started a five-game road swing that will end Dec. 12 in Phoenix. ... No exaggeration, the season has been great thus far. A more unpredictable Premier League is better viewing. Competition at the top and bottom of the table remains fierce and ever-changing. League leaders Arsenal are on pace for 84 points. Fewer than 84 points has only won the league once in the last decade. The word parity is thrown around, and its not entirely accurate. Top teams are beginning to hit their stride, although every team continues to show flaws, making for a topsy-turvy table. There has been no shortage of talking points through 19 games. Before we get to our mid-season awards, lets go all High Fidelity. Here are the top five storylines at the halfway mark. 5) Methodical Mourinho: You love to love him and love to hate him. Its all more compelling with Jose Mourinho in the Premier League. Inspiring, entertaining football however from has been few and far between from his Chelsea team. Mourinho is Exhibit A in over-managing. His meticulous approach leads to a dull end product more times than not. Chelsea has been clinically stifling at times against top competition, in particular stuffing out matches against Arsenal and Manchester United. Free flowing football has been sacrificed to climb the table. Although its surprising a team with the financial wherewithal and talent of Chelsea need to resort to such mind-numbing tactics at times, Mourinho understands its what needs to be done until he can get his players at the club. Its been a Masterclass job thus far; Mourinhos teams are among the most consistent and competitive week to week. While team performance has been predictable, the notable persona of the Portuguese has not. Mourinho 2.0 has overall been more subdued than his previous tenure. The trademark arrogance and gamesmanship however remain omnipresent. Mourinhos leap into the Stamford Bridge crowd, sitting amongst the supporters after being sent to the stands, and interrupting post-match interviews are few examples the Mourinho of yester year is not far from the surface. As Chelsea close in on the top of the table, Chelseas tactics will become more dry and Mourinhos personality more rebellious. We all win with the latter. 4) Managerial Merry-go-round: Five managers were fired in the 2012/13 season. There have been six casualties already this campaign. Paolo Di Canio (Sunderand), Ian Holloway (Crystal Palace), Martin Jol (Fulham), Steve Clarke (West Brom), Andre Villas-Boas (Tottenham), and Malky Mackay (Cardiff City) are all no longer with their respective sides. The biggest shock has to be AVB. The young Portuguese is now a two-time Premier League failure. Its a massive let-down for a perceived tactically superior young mind in the game not being able to relate with the modern player, isolating individuals within the team and not getting the most out of the players at his disposal. Losing Gareth Bale was a blow for Spurs. But the finances spent and the talent on hand is capable of much more. AVB as a man manager will rightfully be questioned in his next gig. The unlucky loser of the unemployed bunch is Mackay. Playing a public chess match with tumultuous Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan was never going to be a battle won. When an owner operates on an island without rhyme and reason, the environment becomes poisoned and stability goes out the window. Mackay leaves with his head held high, despite his big money swing and a miss of striker Andreas Cornelius. Di Canio gets the nod for most warranted sacking. Who in their right mind would think 11 new players; most of marginal talent, at the Stadium of Light would be a recipe for success? And the audacity to stand before the travelling Sunderland supporters after a 3-0 loss at the Hawthorns provided pictures that will go down in infamy. 3) Golden Gunners: Arsene Wengers demise was widely predicted after a 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa to start the season. After the opening day loss, Arsenal reeled off a streak of 12 straight undefeated in all competitions, signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, and brought Mathieu Flamini back to the Emirates. Meanwhile, talent became realized for Welshman Aaron Ramsey, Olivier Giroud showed his worth as a Premier League talisman and a resurgent backline has developed into one of, if not, the best defensive unit in the league. So much for Wenger losing the plot. Arsenal sits atop the table and on top form despite losing Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as long-term absentees. You know things are rolling when goalkeeping is even top notch at the Emirates. The coming of age of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has provided much needed stability. Is this Arsenal team good enough to be Champions? The starting XI is virtually set. January depth moves can be made up front and at the back. But it will inevitably be up to the current crop. They are a strong group. But are they capable of taking their game to the next level? 2) Sizzling Suarez: Its incredible what can change in a matter of four months. Luis Suarez has gone from a biting, erratic misfit to the most consistent performer and producer in the league. Suarez has more goals than seven Premier League teams, and his 19 are equal to the tally of Fulham. And all this has all come in just 14 gammes.dddddddddddd Incredible. The Uruguayan also has five assists, making it sound bizarre to suggest his stats alone doesnt tell the entire story. He is a true game-breaker in a time where players of that dimension are rare. A constant threat, remarkable touch on the ball and extraordinary movement off it, Suarez has evolved into one of the worlds best. Liverpool has broken the bank to sign Suarez to a new mega contract. Ironically enough, it may be his own influence that determines whether he actually sees that contract out on the Merseyside. Its Champions League or bust. Suarez is key. 1) The noise about Moyes: Its the most talked about story and will continue to be. The start of the David Moyes era at Old Trafford has been shaky at best. But there are signs the team is turning the corner. While still lacking true top end talents en masse, the team as unit is playing much better football. Unfair to Moyes, a transition period within the team hit at the same time as the managerial change. This is no fault of Moyes. And to suggest it could all be remedied in his first transfer window was naïve. That doesnt excuse his panic purchase of Marouane Fellaini or the all too cautious approach in team selection/tactics to open the season. Manchester United is in the midst of a squad evolution. The process will continue in January. The knee-jerk, have-it-now nature of sport demands swift change. Moyes will get blamed or praised for whatever happens in the transfer windows. But this is more of a test to the Glazer ownership. Sponsorship acquisition has come fast and furious. The player side continues to lag behind, not moving in accordance with the clubs commercial growth. In the meantime, United on the field will have to continue to be their scrappy best. Theres something truly likeable about an underdog United team. Its been years since theyve been in such a role. Champions League qualification and lengthy runs in Cup competitions would be seen as a successful year. Next year, the stakes will be much higher. Mid-season Awards Top Player: Suarez (Liverpool) – Honourable mentions to Sergio Aguero, Aaron Ramsey and Wayne Rooney. But Suarez is the clear choice. Manager: Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool) – Year number two at Liverpool has exceeded expectations. The manager bemoans his lack of squad depth, and rightfully so. Yet his team, no matter the change in formation or personnel has managed to play an increasing prominent passing game with the ability to adapt in shape and approach appropriately to the occasion. The man deserves a lot of credit. Belief is back at Anfield. Best Goal: Pajtim Kasami (Fulham) vs. Crystal Palace – An ultimate team goal by Arsenal and Jack Wilshere was trumped later the same weekend by an all-time strike from Kasami. A run on full trot from the middle of the park, controlling with the chest and volley top corner on the run from a ridiculous angle at the top corner of the box wins it. Hands down. End of story. Memorable Moment: Asmir Begovic (Stoke City) goal vs. Southampton – It took just 12 seconds for the goalkeeper to score the shock goal of the season. The story goes it was a windy day, Begovic launched the ball from inside his own box, the ball landed between two Southampton centre-backs, Artur Boruc misjudged the big bounce and embarrassment ensued. Perhaps the most shocking variable was the goal made Begovic joint top goal scorer for Stoke at that time on the season. And the goal was scored in November, Surprise player: Seamus Coleman (Everton) – Roberto Martinez has struck gold with the Irish right back. His defensive play has been standout for one of the most dependable backlines in the league. Coleman has added five goals to his account. Thats more goals than he has scored in his Premier League career, one more than Christian Benteke and just one less than all of Chelseas strikers have scored combined. Surprise team: Hull City – many, including myself pegged the Tigers to go straight back to the League Championship. Instead, Hull sits 10th at the halfway point. They have beat Liverpool and Newcastle, were robbed against Spurs, and gave the two Manchester clubs a scare. This has all come from a team without top talent, a manager with a track record of Premier League failure, and a team garnering more attention for a potential name change than anything on the field. This is the feel good story of the league. Team Performance: Manchester City vs. Manchester United – Its one thing to win by a converted touchdown over Norwich City. Its another thing to run your neighbours and reigning Champions off the field in extraordinary fashion. The 4-1 final flattered United. It was truly a performance for the ages. Worst Owner: Vincent Tan (Cardiff City) – Mike Ashley is dethroned by a man who 1) changed the teams historic colours to the chagrin of club supporters, 2) fired his chief scout and hired his sons unqualified friend, 3) fired the popular coach, 4) has thrown the clubs reputation into disrepute. Not bad work for just four months. Well see how much further he goes, and how much higher his pants get in the New Year. Best XI: De GeaColeman-Jagielka-Mertesacker-SantonRamsey-Toure-HazardRooney-Suarez-Aguero ' ' '

WASHINGTON -- One day after their general manager was unexpectedly fired and playing without their second leading scorer, the Cleveland Cavaliers managed to snap their six-game losing streak. Luol Deng was out with flu-like symptoms, and Kyrie Irving, who missed shootaround because he was ill, fought through his sneezing spells to help lead the Cavaliers to a 115-113 win over the Washington Wizards on Friday. Irving had 23 points and tied a career high with 12 assists and made all 13 of his free throws. Dion Waiters scored 24 points and C.J. Miles had 18 for Cleveland. "Im all right. Its the best that Im going to get right now," Irving said. The second-year guard admitted that the firing of Chris Grant, who drafted him, was troubling. "Thats the sad part, the bad part about our business. Things are going to change whether you like it or not and you still have to go out there and perform as a professional. It was probably on our minds but we cant use it as an excuse," Irving said. Cleveland took a 67-63 lead at halftime when Irving hit four free throws just before the intermission and never relinquished it. The Cavaliers took a 101-87 lead three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Wizards, who were led by John Walls 32 points and 10 assists, couldnt make up the difference. Martell Webster hit two late 3-pointers to cut the lead to 115-113 with 2.9 seconds left. Clevelands Jarrett Jack missed two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining. A scramble resulted with Washington getting possession with 0.2 seconds left, but couldnt get off a final shot. The near comeback didnt impress Wizards coach Randy Wittman. "We wait until the last four minutes to fly around and decide to play defence. Last four minutes of the game. Everybody will say, you gave a great effort coming down the stretch. No we didnt. For 44 minutes we didnt give an effort," Wittman said. His team didnt heed his warnings. "We told them what that organization is going through right now. Some tough times with the firing of their GM. Theyre going to be desperate. It always happens no matter who it is that gets fired," Wittman said. Washington fell to 24-25. Its the 12th time theyre one game under .500 this season. The Wizards were one game over .500 after Mondays win against Portland for the first time since Oct. 31, 2009, but they lost in double overtime to San Antonio on Wednesday. "Were not a very good team. Good teams dont do that over and over and over and over again. We can get all caught up in .500, and I told you guys what that meant. Nothing. And think youve arrived. Good teams do not lose basketball games like this nine, ten, 11 times halfway through a season," Wittman said. Marcin Gortat had 19 and Webster 18 for Washington. "We have a lot of fans coming in, paying to watch good basketball at a high level. They expect us to win games like that -- and were losing," Gortat said. Waiters scored just four of his 24 points in the fourth quarter when he was just 2 for 7 from the field. "The energy was different, these guys knew what was at stake after going through a situation where we went through. We faced adversity and it wasnt the first time for us but at the end of the day we came out here we played hard, played for one another and we got a big win," Waiters said. Grant came under fire after he chose Anthony Bennett with the first overall pick last June. Bennett has struggled in his first months with Cleveland, though coach Mike Brown, a longtime friend of Grants, defended Bennett before Fridays game, saying hes shown great improvement recently. Bennett had eight points. NOTES: Clevelands Alonzo Gee had a season-high 11 points. . Wall addressed the fans before the game, thanking them for their support in All-Star Game voting. The fourth-year guard will play in the Feb. 16 game in New Orleans for the first time. .Washington F Al Harrington hasnt played since Nov. 12 because of right knee surgery. Wittman said he thinks Harrington will play again this season, but wouldnt put a timetable on it. http://www.nikesapatosvendaportugal.com/Nike-Free-Run+-2-sm-32.html. MILWAUKEE -- One day after his worst outing in a difficult season, Canadian John Axford lost his job as the Milwaukee Brewers closer. Manager Ron Roenicke said before Tuesday nights game against St. Louis that Francisco Rodriguez will be handling ninth-inning duties while Axford, from Simcoe, Ont., tries to get his confidence back in lower-pressure situations. "Its always difficult when youre talking about a guy that we feel the way we do about Ax," Roenicke said. "We still remember what he did last year for us. So yeah, its always hard to do. But it is the right thing to do, so I didnt feel bad about doing it. I felt good about doing it, because I feel like this is the best way to get him back." Handed a two-run lead against the Cardinals on Monday night, Axford allowed three runs in the ninth inning and the Brewers lost 3-2. Axford has 16 saves in 22 chances this season, struggling to find the dominant form he showed in 2011. "It was a decision I kind of expected after yesterday, yesterdays performance," Axford said. "Its frustrating the way things have been going this year, so maybe itll be a breath of fresh air to step back a little bit, try and get back into the swing of things the way I was last year." Axford said he wasnt surprised by the decision and didnt try to talk Roenicke out of it because he wanted to put the team first. And Axford acknowledged that his recent struggles have shaken his confidence. "Id be lying if I said it was the same as its always been," Axford said. "Today was actually one of the rougher days Ive ever had. Generally, Im pretty good about letting go after blown saves or losses or anything like that. But yesterday, just because I couldnt feel anything -- I literally, as I told (pitching coach Rick) Kranitz, it literally seemed like I was pittching with new mechanics and never threw a curveball before.dddddddddddd." Axford played a critical role in the Brewers run to the NL championship series last season, saving 46 games in 48 chances. Axford had 49 consecutive saves between April 24, 2011 and May 4, 2012 -- the fourth-longest streak in history. But Axford has struggled since then, and his control issues were at their worst in Monday nights meltdown. "He was at a point where he was really frustrated," Roenicke said. "He said that was the worst he has felt on the mound as far as having a feeling where the balls going. With the fastball or the breaking ball, he had no idea where it was going." Rodriguez, who has 292 career saves, has been primarily an eighth-inning setup man since coming to the Brewers in a trade last season. He is 2-4 with a 3.67 ERA this season with one save -- April 10 at Chicago. He has not allowed a run in his past five appearances. Roenicke said Rodriguezs fastball has been "really good," while hes still trying to throw his slider as consistently as he has in the past. And Rodriguez knows how to close. "Its certainly what he wants to do," Roenicke said. "And he is -- hes a closer. Hes a great closer. I think Frankies such a professional that whether I have him setting up or whether I have him closing, he knows how important he is to our team to win." While the Brewers scramble to try to get back into contention, Roenicke doesnt want Axford to be seen as a scapegoat. "I didnt think about it that way, and I dont want him to think about it that way," Roenicke said. "Because hes not. Thats not all thats going on with us. Weve been inconsistent with every phase of the game. So its a little part of it we need to fix, and weve got a great guy to try to fix it with." ' ' '
