Arapaho Pass Trail to Lake Dorothy
This is a fantastic day hike up to Lake Dorothy via the Arapaho Pass Trail, one of the best Chiefs Dee Ford Jersey trails in the wilderness area for viewing wildflowers. Trail conditions: The lower section of the Arapaho Pass Trail is extremely popular during the summer months and sees heavy traffic on the weekends. The lower section of the trail stays wet early in the season; the upper section is rocky up to Arapaho Pass.
View Topo MapThis trail is busy to say the http://www.chiefsauthenticofficial.com/Dee_Ford_Jersey_Chiefs least, and maybe was made more so since we did it on July 4th weekend and the trailhead is known at the July 4th trailhead. The trail is well worn and easy to follow up to Arapahoe Pass. It passes over several small creeks and one waterfall on its journey. The waterfall during times of high water could be a problem crossing but the others all would just mean getting your boots a little wet.
It starts off in some beautiful pine forests before working its way though several meadows that were full of columbine and indian paintbrush as well as other flowers. The most interesting of these are the small elephant head flowers that were first encountered about 1/4 mile before the abandoned mine along the route, just before the trail for the Arapahoe Glacier branches off. These small bunches of flowers really do look like tiny elephant heads and my kids loved them. The trail up to the pass once you get past the mine is a slow gradual climb. Once at the pass you have a steep descent to Dorothy Lake. The view from the Pass are incredible but watch out for rapidly developing storms that can come up almost out of no where. We had to scramble down towards Dorothy Lake when a particularly violent lightning and hail storm blew in over the ridge in just a matter of minutes. Several people on the trail behind us were caught by pea sized hail, driving rain and a lot of lightning.
Look at the Dorothy Lake album.
Really great views at the pass, worth the hike. Bit of a climb to the turnoff sign, then more climbing to the mine. Gentle climb the rest Women's Phillip Gaines Jersey of the way to the pass.
We went on up past Dorothy to the first summit before Neva well worth the view on the other side, including WinterPark ski runs, and all the way to Lake Monarch and beyond.
I was told the best weekend was the last two of July, as the wildflowers are supposed to be great.
In any case, truly enjoyed the hike, chiefsauthenticofficial.com/Phillip_Gaines_Jersey_Chiefs and recommend it.
July 6, 2005 day hike. Best conditions, sunny day, plenty of wildflowers (Columbines, Paintbrush, etc). Great hike with stunning views all the way to the Pass and Lake Dorothy. Some snow fields along the way. Start temperature 70F, at Pass with winds 50F. Trail guide accurate. Start time 10:00am; Out and back 5.0 hours with hour for lunch at Lake Dorothy. Carried 30lb pack for exercise. Some trail running on return. Five mile dirt road to trailhead puts you already deep into the valley at high elevation. Possible return for camping in valley near Diamond Lake, and then hike over Pass down Caribou trail into Columbine.
