NFL Hall of Fame RB Emmitt Smith tackles gout
Most people think gout is a disease experienced only by elderly, overweight men who indulge in too much rich food and too much wine, with King Henry VIII of England as a prime example. In reality, however, gout is genetic and usually occurs in younger men, although factors such as diet can cause flare ups and exacerbate symptoms. That's the case for NFL Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, reported Sports Illustrated on July 9.
The Dallas James White Jersey Cowboys champion hopes to use his fame to spread the word about the condition. Now that it's nine years since his retirement from the NFL, Smith wants to help potential sufferers by publicizing what this form of arthritis involves.
"The pain was so bad I had to take my shoe off and I couldn't walk around with a normal step, I had to walk on the outside of my foot," he recalls. Located in his right big toe, the Devonta Freeman Kids Jersey pain escalated to an intolerable level.
Following his diagnosis and treatment, Smith decided to partner with Takeda Pharmaceuticals to make sure the condition receives the attention it deserves. Gout impacts more than eight million Americans.
In terms of a diet for gout, sufferers typically are advised to reduce or eliminate red meat, seafood and alcohol. Smith has learned to regard his favorite foods, including salmon and steak, as occasional rather than daily treats.
And he points out that a diagnosis of gout doesn't mean you need to stop exercising. Even though gout typically affects the big toe and hence affects the ability to walk or jog, once it's under control you can reap the benefits of fitness.
"I like to ride bikes I just completed a 30 mile ride for diabetes for the first time," he revealed. "I try to ride at least two to three times a week to stay active."
In addition to dietary changes and medication, gout sufferers and those with other forms of arthritis typically are advised to lose weight as needed. Now a new study offers an intriguing insight to the theory that obesity and arthritis are linked. When the appetite hormone leptin is absent, the risk of arthritis is reduced regardless of weight, reported Headlines Global News on July 11.
"We were completely surprised to find that mice that became extremely obese had no arthritis if their bodies didn't have leptin," said Farshid Guilak, PhD, who works at the Duke Department of Surgery. "Although there James White Youth Jersey was some earlier evidence that leptin might be involved in the arthritis disease process, we didn't think that there would be no arthritis at all."
Previous research has shown that leptin impacts inflammation, which is a officialfalconsnflauthentic.com/authentic-devonta-freeman-jersey.html key factor in arthritis. In addition, leption affects hormone levels, weight and metabolism.
So does this mean that obese people do not have higher risks of arthritis, as previously assumed? The researchers declined to make that statement.
"If you are obese, there are benefits to losing weight in terms of arthritis," they said. "For example, if you are obese and lose just 10 pounds, pain decreases significantly."
One of the most common forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis, also is linked to diet and weight. Researchers recently discovered that healthy omega 3 fatty acids can make a significant difference, reported the Medical Daily on July 11. He noted that when compared to omega 3 fats, eating too many unhealthy fats can make osteoarthritis worse.
Building on the results of the leptin study, the researchers now are theorizing that "maybe it's not how much weight you gain, but what you eat," Guilak added. Mice who ate diets high in omega 6 fatty acids had more severe forms of arthritis, while those given omega 3 fatty acid supplements were healthier.
"While omega 3 fatty acids aren't reversing the injury, they appear to slow the progression of arthritis in this group of mice," Guilak explained. "In fact, omega 3 fatty acids eliminated the detrimental effects of obesity in obese mice.".

RCMP launch Project Clemenza to crack down on 2 'violent' organized crime cells in Quebec
More than 200 officers with the special enforcement unit took part in Project Clemenza, whose object was to break up what police are calling two violent and active cells that took over organized crime after Project Colis in 2006. One arrested person is brought into RCMP HQ in Westmount, on Thursday, June 12, 2014. The RCMP also displayed a cache of weapons that they seized. (Dave Sidaway / THE GAZETTE)
MONTREAL The RCMP carried out a series of arrests Thursday following an investigation that sheds some light on an internal conflict within the Mafia in Montreal that lasted for years.
Thirty two people were arrested and two are still at large in the sweeping raids dubbed Project Clemenza. Police seized two homes and two bank accounts along with a cache of powerful automatic weapons, explosives, cocaine, marijuana and cash.
The major organized crime cells were associated with the Bastone brothers, Antonio, 51, of St Jean de Matha and Roberto, 41, of Laval, and with Giuseppe De Vito, who died in prison last year.
Police blamed the two groups for a wave of violence between 2007 and 2011 after the illicit businesses run by major crime families was disrupted in www.redskinsnflofficialauthentic.com/authentic-morgan-moses-jersey.html the wake of Project Colise, an investigation that began in 2003 and culminated with raids in 2006. During the course of that investigation, police bugged the office of a St Lonard caf where Mafia bosses met daily to discuss business and divide the profits from extensive drug, loansharking and gambling networks.
In November 2006, four major Mafia bosses were arrested as part of the investigation including reputed godfather Nicolo Rizzuto (later shot dead in his home) and a further 86 underbosses, Mafia soldiers and associates.
"There was an instability in the traditional organized crime model after Colise," said RCMP superintendent Michel Arcand. "These two cells were not exactly rivals, but there was fighting and there was violence."The investigation was based on more than one million intercepted private conversations made on Blackberry devices.
"This was the most important interception of its kind in North America," said Arcand. "Police forces must keep ahead of electronic changes as organized crime certainly does."
By analyzing the messages, the police were able to link members of the two cells to certain crimes, among them the firebombing of the Caf Monte Cristo in January 2011 and the Caf Pigalle in February 2011.
Based on other intercepted messages, De Vito is believed to have orchestrated plans to smuggle money, drugs and cellphones into prison, while he was incarcerated.
Messages identified five people involved with the redskinsnflofficialauthentic.com/authentic-morgan-moses-jersey.html kidnapping and extortion related to the case of Peter Whitmore, who owed a lot of money to the Bastone brothers, and was held against his will between January and April 2011.
The Bastone brothers are facing charges of importing drugs with intent to traffic.
De Vito died of cyanide poisoning in prison in 2013. His death is still under investigation by the Sret du Qubec. and were carried out simultaneously with the help of local police. Arcand said that Project Clemenza is still ongoing.
Included among the people arrested Thursday was Gina Conforti, 37, a St Lonard woman who, in 2010, was found to be living with De Vito while he was in hiding in an attempt to avoid being arrested in Project Colise. Although De Vito despised the Rizzutos, because he suspected they killed his former boss, he was involved in a major cocaine smuggling operation with the Rizzuto organization while the group was under surveillance in the Colise investigation.
De Vito's wife, Adele Sorella, killed their two daughters while he was on the lam. Conforti, a mother of two daughters, appeared before a judge at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday where she agreed to follow a series of conditions in order to be released.
Alesandro Sucapane, 49, an associate of De Vito's, was among the people arrested Thursday. He also was among the dozens of people arrested in 2006's Project Colise. Evidence gathered in Colise revealed he acted as an enforcer for De Vito as they tried to find out how the RCMP managed to seize more than 200 kilograms of cocaine they were attempting to import on a flight into Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. In 2009, Sucapane pleaded guilty to extortion and a related gangsterism charge. He was fined $50,000 and was sentenced to a 16 month prison term. He now faces charges, along with three other men, related to the 2011 firebombings at Caf Monte Cristo and Caf Pigalle.
A different indictment alleges Sucapane and three other men were the people behind a large cache of firearms and explosives that were discovered on Feb. 1, 2011, in a unit rented in a self storage warehouse on Pascal Gagnon St. Bashaud Breeland Kids Jersey in the St Lonard borough.
Another person who was part of the roundup on Thursday is Nicola Di Marco, 45, a man who was also arrested in Project Colise. The investigation showed that Di Marco helped run a clandestine gaming house that was opened in an office building in St Lonard with financial support from the late Nick Rizzuto, the son of Vito Rizzuto, the mob boss who died last year of natural causes.
Charges related to the gaming house were still pending when Di Marco was arrested a second time, in 2010, while carrying a 9 mm pistol. The police received information about the firearm while they were trying to determine who stood where in the violent internal conflict. Di Marco was eventually sentenced to a four year prison term.
Most, if not all of the charges listed in six indictments filed at the Montreal courthouse on Thursday involve crimes that allegedly occurred in 2011. Project Clemenza was well underway that year when it had to be set aside following the death of Salvatore Montagna in November 2011. Montagna was killed while he was trying to take http://www.redskinsnflofficialauthentic.com/authentic-bashaud-breeland-jersey.html control of the Mafia in Montreal. The reasons why Project Clemenza was set aside are currently subject to a publication ban.

After getting a phone call earlier this week from Cleveland linebacker Andra Davis, Lewis responded to some friendly jousting with a prediction. He told me he wanted me to get the ball 30 times,'' Lewis said. I told him if I get the ball 30 times, it's going to be a career day.''Lewis couldn't have been more been more prescient if he'd been looking at tarot cards. The fourth year pro from Tennessee left his cleat marks all over Davis, the Browns and the NFL record book Sunday. He rushed for a league record 295 yards on, yes, 30 carries in the Ravens' 33 13 victory.Lewis broke the record of 278 set by Cincinnati's Corey Dillon three years ago against Denver.I guess the dude is Nostradamus,'' Cleveland safety Earl Little said. After ending up on the wrong end of a shootout with Pittsburgh last week, the Ravens were determined to ease the burden on rookie quarterback Kyle Boller (Hart High of Newhall) by reverting to the formula that made them Super Bowl champions in Lewis' rookie season match a sturdy defense with a stout running game.It wasn't long before they were on to something. On the second play of the game, Lewis took the ball through a huge hole off right tackle, broke through a defender near the 30 yard line and out ran the rest of the Browns for an 82 yard touchdown. It was a sign of what was to come.Lewis carried for 23 yards the next time he touched the ball, and by halftime he had piled up 180 yards. It was then, at the urging of offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, that he started looking at the record. It became a possibility on the first play of the fourth quarter, when Lewis again took the ball through a huge hole and beat everyone else to the end zone for a 62 yard score, a run he punctuated by firing the ball into the stands. The record came on one of Jadeveon Clowney 2XL Jersey his most pedestrian runs of the day, when Lewis bulled his way over left guard for three yards on third and 15 with 7:40 left to play. The Ravens (1 1) got the ball back once more and handed it to Lewis four times for 15 yards. But with second and goal at the Cleveland 9, Lewis stayed on the sidelines. On a day like today, I can't regret anything,'' Lewis said of just missing the 300 yard mark. It was beautiful, and I'll remember it for a long time.''So, too, will the Browns. The dude, he said what he said, he did it and it's in the history books,'' said Jadeveon Clowney Jersey Little, whose team dropped to 0 2 and now gets Garrison Hearst and Dillon in the next two weeks. Everybody's good (in the NFL), but I don't like when guys make comments. He just broke the record and there's nothing I can do about it. Trust me, I have a sick feeling right now.''Davis wasn't feeling much better. It's very frustrating,'' he said. Especially when a guy says he's going to do it, and then he goes and does it.''Lewis would have had a 300 yard game and another touchdown if not for a holding penalty on receiver Marcus Robinson that deprived Lewis the final 12 yards of what would have been a 60 yard touchdown run in the second quarter.Lewis, who has had one college and pro season cut short by knee injuries, returned from the second one to rush for 1,327 yards last year just about matching his rookie output. If there were any lingering questions of whether the 5 foot 11, 235 pound Lewis still possessed the kind of speed and strength he had before missing 2001, they are no more.I think I did that last year,'' said Lewis, who gained 69 yards on 15 carries last week. But it kind of put the icing on the cake.''There's no shortage of frosting for Lewis against Cleveland. In five career games against the Browns, he has totaled 838 yards on 120 carries, an average of 6.98 per carry. He also has four consecutive 100 yard games and a 4 1 record against them.
