FirstEnergy in middle of converting Eastlake Power Plant coal generating units
FirstEnergy is deep in the process of converting the Eastlake Power Plant from a coal powered generating station to a site featuring five synchronous condensers.
The project, which is expected to cost about $60 million, is planned to be finished by June 2015. One of the five generating units has already been converted, http://www.officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-BRANDON-LAFELL-JERSEY.html a second is in the middle of being converted and the other three are waiting for the switch. Each unit takes about 18 months to be completely converted.
As FirstEnergy electrical engineer Christopher Slattery explained, here is how the Eastlake generating plant currently works on a very basic level. Coal is burned to produce steam, which turns turbines. The turbines then turn generators that produce electricity.
After this conversion is complete, coal will no longer be burned at the plant and the familiar sight of steam being released from the tall stacks on top of the facility will be but a memory.
While the plant will no longer be generating electricity come September, it will still be important in ensuring the reliability of the electrical grid.
Kevin England, a manager of major projects at FirstEnergy, said the synchronous condensers of the plant will help pull in power from plants that are farther away. He compared voltage to water pressure in a pipe.
If you have a pipe from a thousand miles away, as the water travels it loses pressure by the time it gets to the end, England said. We have the same problem with electricity that travels long distances.
It s like adding an in line pump to your hose, said Slattery.
This conversion was commissioned because in 2012 FirstEnergy announced the future closing of nine coal fired power plants. Two more closures were announced last year, said Stephanie Walton, Brandon Browner Authentic Jersey senior communications representative for FirstEnergy.
Due www.officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-DANNY-AMENDOLA-JERSEY.html to new environmental regulations, these coal plants would have required major upgrades.
With the cost of those regulations, it just didn t make sense to make those investments, said Walton.
About 120 employees work at the plant, but that number will be reduced to between 15 to 20 once the conversion is complete.
We re currently working to offer positions throughout the rest of the business for those employees, Walton said.
Converting the Eastlake plant to synchronous condensers is one way to make up for the loss of the generating plants. There are Brandon Browner Patriots Jersey other options, including building new condensers or installing new transmission lines, but FirstEnergy determined that converting the generating plant to a synchronous condenser was the most cost effective solution, said Slattery.
The idea is nothing new, but it s Darrelle Revis Limited Jersey not all that common, said Slattery of converting existing plants to condensers. The Eastlake site is the only FirstEnergy property undergoing this type of conversion.
While being able to keep existing equipment, such as transformers and transmission lines, in use is the most cost effective solution, England said there have been some unexpected issues.
Unit 4 at the plant went online in 1956. That generator and much of the other original equipment is still being used and will continue to be used after the conversion. Meshing the new and old technology to work together has probably been the project s biggest hurdle, but there have not been any major set backs.
We re out having to re work Darrelle Revis Patriots Jersey some things we didn t anticipate, said England.

How Does Salmonella Get Into Eggs
"Stewardship of the ocean is so important to our customers and to us," David Pilat, the global seafood buyer for Whole Foods told the New York Times.
Salmonella can get into Danny Amendola Jersey an egg from the inside out or the outside in.
Experts advise keeping eggs in the refrigerator and cooking them http://www.officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-BRANDON-BROWNER-JERSEY.html well to avoid getting sick.
On Friday the Food and Drug Administration announced they found salmonella in chicken feed that was used at two Iowa farms where tainted eggs have been traced.
An estimated 2,400 people have been sickened from the eggs and more than 550 million eggs have been recalled since early August.
Even if investigators have indeed found the salmonella source, you may wonder, how can the bacteria get inside the hard shell of an egg? Let us count the ways.
One route is through the insides of a chicken, said Kevin Keener, a food process engineer at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind. On average, he said, one out of every 20,000 chicken eggs contains a small amount of salmonella that is deposited into the sac by the hen.
Chickens get doses of salmonella bacteria (of which there are 2,300 kinds) from their environment, which is easily contaminated by rodents, birds and flies. These carriers deliver the bacteria to all types of farms regardless of whether they're conventional, Brandon LaFell Jersey organic or free range.
Once the bacteria get in the chicken, the microorganisms thrive under ideal conditions, with internal temperatures of about 102 degrees Fahrenheit. Yet chickens harbor salmonella without any signs of illness, making it impossible to know which animals are infected.
"Literally," Keener said, "it's a needle in a haystack."
Those few contaminated eggs that come out of a hen usually contain a very low levels of bacteria, Keener said, totaling between two and five microorganisms. It takes a level Brandon LaFell Elite Jersey of at least 100 bacteria to make a person sick.
But multiplication happens fast officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-DARRELLE-REVIS-JERSEY.html if the eggs aren't cooled quickly. And if there's a lapse in cleaning practices or an undetected outbreak among the chickens, the percentage of infected animals and tainted eggs can also increase rapidly.
"Salmonella doubles every 20 minutes under ideal conditions," Keener said. "When sitting there Danny Amendola Limited Jersey for an hour, two could become 32. At two hours, there would be 1,000 organisms. At eight hours, it would be in the range of millions. In one egg."

San Francisco's Pure Play gambles on legality of online poker site
Justice Department has busted more than a dozen Internet poker sites that allowed Americans to http://www.officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-MATTHEW-SLATER-JERSEY.html play online for real money. and most of the operators were foreigners. law and we're coming after you.
"What we're doing is legal," declared entrepreneur Jason B. Kellerman, owner and CEO of Pure Play, one of the largest online poker rooms in the world. "We're not a gambling site. We're a subscription based poker site."
Kellerman insists his Financial District operation breaks no California or federal gambling laws because the online poker tournaments which award huge cash prizes to winners are free to enter.
"We operate under a different business model than other online poker sites," the 44 year old said. "Ours is a subscription model, patented by me. People pay a $25 monthly fee to become a member of Pure Play. Then, once you're a member, you can play in all the online poker tournaments you want for free, and win cash prizes."
Under the law, Pure Play is not considered gambling but a type of "sweepstakes," Kellerman said. That's because people can join for free by sending the company Logan Mankins Authentic Jersey a sign up postcard, he said.
"Legally, what we do is no different from what McDonald's does with its Monopoly contest, where you collect game pieces to win cash prizes," Kellerman said.
"When you buy a burger, you get a Monopoly game piece. What makes it a legal sweepstakes and not gambling is that you can get a game piece without buying anything Shane Vereen Womens Jersey if you write to McDonald's and request one. Pure Play operates under the same legal principle."
Customers are willing to pay the $25 a month fee to join Pure Play even though there's a free option.
"It's a matter of convenience," Kellerman said. "People don't want to send in a postcard every month. Instead, most of our customers give us a credit card number and we bill them every month. Plus, our paid members don't have to look at ads on the site when they play. and more than 9 million people have registered since it debuted in 2005.
In addition to the tournaments, which hand out about $100,000 www.officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-RYAN-ALLEN-JERSEY.html in winnings a month, Pure Play also offers other casino games, although they have no cash payouts.
"There's not a lot of concern about that," he said. Pure Play's website lists 14 states mostly in the South and Midwest, not California whose residents are banned from becoming members because of respective state gambling laws.
In addition, public records show that there have been numerous consumer complaints made against the company. From August 2010 to February 2013, according to the most recent information available from the Better Business Bureau's website, there were 33 complaints filed about Pure Play. Of those, 18 were about billing or collection issues, 13 were about product or service issues, and two were about advertising issues.
However, of the 33 total complaints, 30 were resolved to the customer's satisfaction.
Determining whether the multimillion dollar business is Shane Vereen Patriots Jersey a legal sweepstakes is not cut and dried. After all, the fact remains that his paid customers who don't win a tournament are still out their money.
I. Nelson Rose, a professor at Whittier Law School who's considered one of the foremost experts on gambling law and who consulted for Pure Play, said several factors make the San Francisco operation legit.
"Legally, for an activity to be considered gambling, it must contain three elements: consideration, chance and prize," Rose explained. "Consideration means you have to pay to participate. Chance means the activity involves luck, not skill. And prize means you can win something of value.
"If consideration is missing and something is free to participate in, that's a sweepstakes. If chance is missing and an activity is skill, that's a contest. And if prize is missing and you can't win anything of value, that's an amusement. and California justice departments to see if the state and federal attorneys general agreed with Kellerman's assessment that Pure Play is not breaking any laws.
Neither department, however, would confirm that Pure Play is legal. In fact, both would not even discuss the matter. Justice Department. and around the world to play poker over the Internet for real money. In coming years, numerous other such Internet poker rooms will follow, run from locales the world over. law.
2003: Interest in poker explodes after an unknown accountant named Chris Moneymaker wins the World Series of Poker and earns $2.5 million. Instead of paying the $10,000 entry fee, he earned free entry by first Logan Mankins Limited Jersey winning an online qualifying poker tournament that cost $39 to enter. His story inspires the term "Moneymaker Effect" and is credited with igniting a worldwide poker boom.
2004: San Francisco entrepreneur Jason B. Kellerman, the former CEO of search engine LookSmart, gets a patent for a new type of online poker site. Bet Zip will allow customers to bet nothing and still play for real money.
The 3 Most Notorious Photobombers on the Internet
For the uninitiated, photobombing is the art of jumping into the background of a photograph right as it is being taken. The results vary, but can be particularly hilarious if the correct ratio of "bizarre expression" to "having absolutely no relation to anyone in the picture" is met. Because it is the Internet's heroic burden to keep track of these things, here are three of the world's most http://www.officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-ROB-NINKOVICH-JERSEY.html notorious photobombers.
3. Paul Yarrow Matthew Slater Jersey
Paul Yarrow really, really likes to be on the news. However, rather than achieving his dream by eating a thousand hot dogs or killing a president, Yarrow prefers to Ryan Allen Womens Jersey just stand in the background of live broadcasts and stare at the back of the reporter's head like it's playing every Michael McDonald song ever recorded.
"Wait, you can see him, too? Oh, thank God."
According to one of the various interviews Yarrow has given (because lurking behind broadcasters like a pastry guarding sphinx is apparently a newsworthy endeavor), he is actually trying to make a statement about overweight people not being featured on TV because they aren't attractive enough. Despite Batmaning his way into so many appearances, Yarrow claims that the reporters always deliberately pass him over when taking statements from the crowd, probably because he looks like Willow on growth hormones and has the speaking voice of a cartoon mouse.
2. Michael Cera
When he's not entertaining us with side splitting comedy hits like Year One and Extreme Movie, Michael Cera is busy ambushing photos of anonymous douchebags to make them slightly more noteworthy.
Although to be fair, this photo is pretty hilarious on its own.
According to one of the least interesting minutes of television in the history of the medium, Cera wasn't even aware of the photobombing trend he just really likes jumping in on pictures, regardless of who is involved.
"Hey, did you guys see Matthew Slater Womens Jersey Superbad? That almost makes up for everything else!"
However, judging by these examples, Michael Cera might actually be some sort of celebrity vigilante using his chuckle Ryan Allen Elite Jersey fame to thwart aspiring date rapists.
1. Kelsey Whyte
Nineteen year old self described "professional photobomber" Kelsey Whyte has recently become an online sensation, because the Internet makes people like Andy Milonakis famous.
That's Whyte on the right, although the girl in the middle knows what everyone is really looking officialpatriotsonlineprostore.com/WOMENS-STEPHEN-GOSTKOWSKI-JERSEY.html at.
Whyte is responsible for hijacking several photos taken at a local bar, appearing behind groups of drunk people and looking like a banshee that forgot to shield its eyes from the Ark of the Covenant.
Sheridan Student Union via Imgur
Amazingly, she still seems to be the least intoxicated person in this picture.
Most of the photos were taken by the same person, who is a friend of Whyte's, which explains how she is able to get away with making stroke faces in so many candid shots of total strangers. Her antics have earned her a legion of fans on 4chan and Reddit, which admittedly is like telling people you have a big following in prison.
Storm Johnson's father said Canes backfield was 'crowded' for his son
Westleigh "Storm" Johnson, coming off a freshman season in which he carried the ball just nine times for 119 yards, but showed a lot of promise with his 71 yard touchdown run in the regular season finale against South Florida, informed coach Al Golden Tuesday afternoon he would like to transfer.
"As of this afternoon, Westleigh Storm Johnson is no longer a part of the University of Miami Football program," UM coach Al Golden said in a statement released through the school Tuesday night.
"When these situations arise, we always assist the student athlete and his family in the transfer process. We wish Storm success in all future endeavors."
Johnson father, Wes, said his son had spoken to Golden "multiple times" about leaving since he took over as coach.
"He wanted to be closer to home. He a mama boy and the backfield is crowded," Johnson Sr. said. "Life is full of surprises. We not broken up. It his life. Sometimes you have to make hard decisions."
Johnson, who finished this spring as the team No. 3 running back, was one of six players reportedly suspended for the season opener against Maryland cheap jerseys a report coach Al Golden would neither confirm nor deny during spring practice.
Johnson (6 0, 216) also was reportedly involved in an April 27 incident at a UM residential hall for which school police were called to the scene.
Johnson Sr. said he had been told his son he was "not suspended" and that none of that played into his son decision.
"He coming home, going to relax, get into a workout regime and he decide within then next couple weeks what he going to do," Westleigh Sr. said. "There nothing else that needs to be said."
Johnson is the fifth player to seek transfer out of UM since the end of the spring. Earlier this month, UM announced linebackers Travis Williams and Kevin Nelson and defensive backs Jamal Reid and Devont Davis were no longer with the program. Defensive lineman Jeffrey Brown, arrested on sexual battery charges, was suspended indefinitely from the team.
> So who becomes the backup if Lamar Miller or Mike James twists an ankle? That would be redshirt freshman Darion Hall. Here a nice story on Hall by his hometown newspaper The Naples Daily News from the spring.
The Canes could also given incoming freshman Kevin Grooms a shot. He was a standout at South Broward High the past two seasons. Or, they could move redshirt sophomore Eduardo Clements back from cornerback. UM has one of the nation top tailbacks committed in its 2012 class, Miami Norland Duke Johnson.
> In other UM news from Tuesday, the Hurricanes received a commitment from 2012 linebacker Raphael Kirby. The 6 1, 215 pound prospect from Stephenson High in Georgia picked UM over Florida, LSU, North Carolina and South Carolina.
These commitments of course are non binding until they sign a National Letter of Intent in February. Kirby has teammates headed to Florida and it wouldn be a surprise if in the wacky world of recruiting he pulls a "late surprising switch."
> cheap nfl jerseys The Hurricanes men basketball team will play at Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 29. The rest of UM 2011 12 schedule has yet to be released.
MANNY NAVARRO AND BARRY JACKSON
this really sucks. loaded backfield or not you dont let a great player like that transfer. besides he have to sit out a year regardless (assuming he doesnt want to go to an fcs school). after this year both james and lamar will be draft eligible. whos to say he wouldnt start here next year anyways? plus theres no way of knowing how the RB situation will work out at another school. if a young UGA or GT RB emerges next year with no chance of losing their starting spot, what then? does he transfer somewhere outside of georgia? not to mention we will soon have one of the best Olines in college football to run behind. i really think it benefits storm to stay, and i really believe he shouldve thought out this decision even more. part of the challenge of moving away is to mature and learn to be an adult. you always have ups and downs. and times when you miss home. the key is to stick with it. it benefit you long term and help to develop that mental fortitude needed to live life on your own. mistake IMO, but good luck to him.
It is not just about keeping great players on your team. They have to be happy and willing to work and buy into your system. You go through a coaching change and some players just won be happy no matter what. This is a big loss but it is less big if the kid wasn gonna be happy here. No problem for us though. Two great backs next year, hall is no joke either and at least one top flight recruit on his way. Do NOT move Clements back, and get the freshman RB over to corner as well. We are fine at RB.
